This deck is a list of affordable staples for card draw, ramp, removal, and other basic functions of a commander deck.

Since MTG has a universe of over 20,000 cards, I limited my list to the ones that are cheap to cast (3 mana or less) and cheap to buy ($5 or less). I did include a few cards that are useful exceptions to that rule, or have a higher printed casting cost that will usually be cast for less (e.g. Ravenous Trap and Curtains' Call). Most boardwipes cost 4-6 mana due to their bigger impact, but not all (e.g. Flame Blitz).

I focused primarily on cards that have unconditional casting costs (i.e. those can be used at any time without depending on the boardstate), but also included some useful exceptions (e.g. Secrets of the Golden City and Pact of the Serpent). Green card draw and removal spells tend to be tied to the P/T or number of creatures on the battlefield.

Command Zone staff put a high value on cards with cycling since these can act as "smoothers" when you need a different card than the one you have (e.g. Forsake the Worldly)

Category Notes

Boardwipes are like cleanses that clear out your current problems

Card Draw gives you protein to outmuscle your opponents

Protection spells are the vitamins and minerals that keep you from illness

Ramp gives you energy to cast more spells

Recursion spells are memory boosters that bring important things back to life

Removal spells are medicine that help you deal with threats and health problems once they've already formed

Smoothers are the fiber that keep your card draws consistent and regular

Card Notes

Note that blink & flicker effects will protect against single target removal because they change the state of the card that was targeted, but they don't help against boardwipes
