Thirst for Discovery

Instant

Draw three cards. Then discard two cards unless you discard a basic land card.

Balaam__: In the attempt to make a Standard deck idea viable in Pioneer, this is definitely the concern I have as well; especially given the prevalence of Thoughtseize. I've considered adding something like Censor but I'm not sure what to take out, maybe Thirst for Discovery, Faithful Mending, or Consider? Is this what you would do? Any other thoughts? I appreciate your opinion on the matter as I had the same reservations. I guess I was hoping it would work quick enough that this wouldn't be an issue but you're probably right in stating I need to account for this.

Nice deck idea. Seems you took the mono blue djinn deck and modified it for black spot removal. I don't know how well Impede Momentum and Phyrexian Espionage will work since most of your deck is centered around land pass gameplay and the sorcery speed nature of these cards can be a little limiting.

I recommend using March of Swirling Mist in place of momentum.

Thirst for Discovery is also a good draw spell as you run enough basics that you should still get the draw advantage you are looking for, but it also doubles to fill grave with more spells for Djinn and Terror if you must discard. The instant speed nature is really helpful as it allows you to at least bluff counterspell interaction.

Sideboard wise you may want to consider Kotose, the Silent Spider. There is a lot of recursion in the format and being able to remove all copies of a threat from you opponents deck, hand, and grave can be really helpful. Remember not to play the exiled card if you are truly worried about it being used from their grave.

If you want grave hate at a faster rate then use Unlicensed Hearse

If you want to try and turn this infinite you could try using Krosan Restorer. To help you get the threshold active you can use some Brokers Hideout and some type of loot draw like Thirst for Discovery to help you find combo parts. If you take the threshold path you may want to consider using Consider over Opt at the very least.

Another draw/ramp card to consider Growth Spiral

Spellbook doesn't do anything based on the card draw options you are using.

Tamiyo's Journal is very slow and I don't see any cards to interact with your opponent outside of Counterspell. Doubt Journal this will do much for you.

Also you somehow have 6 copies of Counterspell in your deck.

If you want a board wipe to help you survive and don't want to kill all your creatures, then you may want to consider Time Wipe.

Prosperous Innkeeper may be something you want to run if you do not want to run sweepers as it gives you etb to gain life to sustain and generates treasure that ramps/color fixes in a pinch.

Hope the suggestions help and best of luck with the casual fun deck idea.

Hey, nice version on less than $100 budget.

I know this is sea monster tribal, but consider cutting a few of the lesser sea monsters for more effects to enable Runo to transform and some more ramp?

Vile Entomber can first help to setup Runo then Krothuss can copy it to get Wonder into your graveyard while in combat. It's helpful to have a creature who Krothuss can copy to put any sea monster from your library into your graveyard for reanimation.

These card suggestions could replace:

Legendary sea monsters are less good with Krothuss because can't keep the token copies of them and Lorthos/Slinn don't give you any effect for value when token copies of them enter the battlefield.

Baleful Strix is good with Sea-Dasher Octopus to mutate for a flying/deathtouch 2/2 Octopus who draws a card when a token copy of it is created as well as when it does combat damage to a player. Without Sea-Dasher Strix is still good with Krothuss for repeatable draw. Strix could replace Perplex.

Good luck with your deck.

Hey, nice budget upgrade of the precon.

Tortured Existence is a repeatable discard effect to trigger Sefris to venture on each player's turn for one mana each time as long as you have at least one creature in your graveyard and one creature in your hand to repeatedly loop discard/recur. Existence + Radiant Solar to venture two times on each player's turn for and Solar can put itself into your graveyard from your hand to enable Existence. Cycling creatures are also helpful to enable Existence. Existence is a reanimation enabler that you can activate at instant speed to abuse Sefris's Create Undead effect.

Viscera Seer + Reassembling Skeleton combo to trigger Sefris to venture on each player's turn for two mana each time. Can also pair Seer with Ashen Rider for a repeatable effect of Rider dying, to get Rider back into your graveyard to reanimate again with Sefris's Create Undead effect. Apprentice Necromancer also combos with Rider since Rider will die at the next end step.

Sun Titan + Apprentice Necromancer for repeatable reanimation of any 3 CMC or less permanents for only one mana. When Titan is reanimated by Necromancer it can reanimate Necromancer and Necromancer gives Titan haste when it reanimates it. Do this interaction on your turn, each time for one mana.

If reanimation is the main theme then consider a few more effects to setup? Loot is draw and then discard which triggers Sefris to venture and it gives good control over what cards you discard. Consider more loot?

Vile Entomber can search for and put any card into your graveyard to setup reanimation.

If interested I offer more advice including cuts to consider. Good luck with your deck.

Hey, well done with less than $50.

Reanimation is a good theme to go with Runo/Krothuss because the cards that can help to setup Runo to transform can also enable reanimation. Self-mill is a way to setup Runo/reanimation, but loot which is draw then discard gives you more control over what card(s) you put into your graveyard. With self-mill you may mill a noncreature card that you would rather draw, that you can't recur later. With loot you have more control over what cards you discard and you draw first. More loot can help to get Wonder into your graveyard. Consider more loot?

  • Frantic Search: can discard a 6 CMC creature then use the three untap lands to cast Runo.
  • Thirst for Discovery: draw three for three mana, can then discard up to two creatures. If you don't need to discard creatures then just discard a basic land since there's 25 of them here.
  • Obsessive Stitcher: is a repeatable looter and an instant speed reanimator.
  • Tomebound Lich: loot on ETB and when it does combat damage to a player, nice creature to copy with Krothuss.
  • Mask of Memory: equip to Runo or Krothuss for repeatable loot.

Spawning Kraken is a busted budget 6 CMC creature with Krothuss since it's a Kraken who creates 9/9 Krakens any time any Kraken does combat damage to a player. By controlling just Krothuss and Spawning who's able to attack, if all these creatures do combat damage to an opponent then you create nine 9/9 Kraken tokens. These two cards create an army with 90+ power spread between them.

Vile Entomber is helpful to setup Runo then copy it with Krothuss to get Wonder while in combat. Having a creature who can tutor for and put any card of your choice into your graveyard is powerful with reanimation. Victimize is great reanimation for it's mana cost and low price.

I see Baleful Strix and Sea-Dasher Octopus pairs well with Strix to mutate. When you mutate Strix with Sea-Dasher on top you make a 2/2 blue Octopus with flying, deathtouch, draws a card when it ETB and when it does combat damage to a player. If you copy the mutated creature with Krothuss you make two copies of it and that token becomes one creature, an Octopus who has all of these abilities.

If the original mutated creature (Sea-Dasher with Strix below it) is returned to your hand then both Sea-Dasher and Strix return to your hand to cast Sea-Dasher again, to mutate again. Sea-Dasher is powerful because it has flash for two mana mutate to any nonHuman creature you control to turn that creature into an Octopus for much more interaction with Krothuss.

If interested I offer suggestions of cuts to consider. Good luck with your deck.
