I wasn't sure what your budget per card is but this should hopefully not break the bank. I can recommend cuts should you wish

Feed the Swarm - Enchantment removal

Mind Twist - Note it states random, especially effective if ramped into in the early game. Also useful as counterspell bait.

Night's Whisper - Draw

Nightmare Unmaking - Versatile wipe

Sheoldred's Edict/Hero's Downfall - PW Removal

Bubbling Muck - Ramp! Highly recommended. Especially because you're not running urborg

Ill-Gotten Gains - Up to you, could be useful, could backfire.

Barter in Blood - Mass sacrifice

TRANScend +1

Arterial Flow > Despise - ? I think the extra 2 mana is worth it to make each opponent discard 2 cards.

Go for the Throat > Rend Flesh - Costs 1 less, although meta dependent.

Sheoldred's Edict > Doomblade - Hits each opponent. While you don't get to target the creature, it is more flexible and isn't stopped by hexproof or shroud, meta dependent.

Buried Ruin - Recur equipment

How has Alhammarret's Archive been working for you? Given you don't have more than 20% of your deck as draw and your commander isn't related to draw, do you find it not pulling it's weight sometimes? Same thing with lifegain aspect.

Oblivion Stone > Plague wing - Oblivion stone while more symmetrical, is cheaper to cast, can be cast earlier and activated alter and most importantly, hits artifacts and enchantments which is black's biggest weakness.

At the risk of being out of budget, Imp's Mischief - "Counters" counterspells and redirects targeted removal, draw and extra turns. Given you're a voltron deck, people are always going to target your commander. It's nice to also have the ability to bluff (and interact on the stack).

Infernal Darkness - Contaminations cousin that doesn't shut off coffers

Read the Bones/Sign in Blood/Night's Whisper/Syphon Mind - Draw. I understand your commander tutors but you won't always be ensured that she lives to see your next turn. Having some draw to help you dig is crucial.

Perhaps some flexible spot removal like Sheoldred's Edict?

More than anything, you have a lot of high cmc cards and long winded combos which are difficult to pull off, even with a tutor in the command zone. Some ramp can help you, Arcane Signet and Mind Stone come to mind. Lowering the avg cmc of this deck + adding more draw and ramp = more consistency in achieving your goal. Having a plan B (and C) is fine until it takes too much away from Plan A.

You’ve done well for your first brew! - here’s some of my thoughts:

  • your mana curve is very high. Modern decks typically won’t have more than 3-4 cards costing 4 mana, and run nothing above that value. Your current curve is going to lead to some very slow/clumsy turns.

  • Added to this, your land count is very low. Most midrange decks want to be running around 23-24 lands.

  • you’re running a lot of cards as 1-ofs/2-ofs instead of as playsets (4-ofs). This will lead to consistency issues and make the deck more unreliable/chaotic.

  • you don’t really have anything in the way of interaction at the moment, which is dangerous as it means basically letting the opponent do what they want. Imo you want around 2-4 playsets of interaction - cards like Fatal Push, Abrupt Decay, Assassin's Trophy, Sheoldred's Edict, Infernal Grasp, Thoughtseize, Inquisition of Kozilek.

What I would suggest for new deckbuilders is to pick 9 cards, and run playsets (4-ofs) of each of those (making 36 cards) alongside 24 lands (for a 60 card deck). For those 9 cards you want a reasonable mana curve - something like 1,1,1,2,2,2,3,3,4 would be ideal. Make sure at least 2-4 of those 9 cards are interaction pieces.

@capwner I actually just had a FNM tonight and played this deck (but my Shriekmaw/Slaughter Pact/Sudden Spoiling/Grim Discovery are still in the mail... so instead I was running a playset of Bloodghast and some ratio of Liliana's Triumph/Sheoldred's Edict/Augur of Skulls... I will update this deck with the matchup results next week when I get the missing cards in.

Tonight I played against yawg and Rhinos and had a bye.... In the yawgmoth matchup One of the games I just got absolutely blown out by Force of Vigor getting rid of my both The Rack/Shrieking Afflictions and both of us were in topdeck mode but I ended up losing. I went 1-2 for both the games I played tonight; granted I lost but they were close/winnable I swear!

I have been toying with the idea of Cabal Coffers but The real monkey wrench of the deck is Smallpox and Liliana of the Veil... some games I can get 5 lands in play but other times its a struggle to get/keep 3; I think thats why I like Ghost Quarter simply because there isn't any investment to use it.

Some thoughts:

  • don’t include either of those sideboard cards into your deck, they’re bad.

  • Profane Tutor is much better than both Grim Tutor and Diabolic Tutor. I’d just run the Profane Tutor and ditch both of these other tutors entirely in favour of more early game interaction (killspells).

  • your land count of 28 seems good, especially as Cabal Coffers ”isn’t a land” and won’t be helping you at-all until you have 3 other lands in play anyway. However, you could replace some swamps with Troll of Khazad-dum, as they can act both as land-fetches early game, and large creatures late game.

  • if you’re planning on making big mana, Tainted Adversary is going to be a lot more useful than Gifted Aetherborn.

  • you never want to be paying more than 2 mana for a killspell. In that vein i’d recommend either Infernal Grasp, Bloodchief's Thirst, or Sheoldred's Edict instead of Murder.

  • I don’t think Hypnotic Specter is very useful - a lot of decks will already be empty handed by their own play-patterns before this thing swings. I’d swap it for one of the before-mentioned killspells (or Damnation),… if you really want a creature, maybe something like Tourach, Dread Cantor.

I think the biggest hurdle to this deck is that while you’re probably going to be able to play a land every turn, that’s still pretty slow ramp-wise, so you should be investing a lot more resources into ensuring you can slow the game down in those early turns (by killing your opponents threats) so that you can reliably do stuff with your big spells in the late game.

vinylghost, if you’re interested in an update, I’ve made some changes to the deck that I think really smooth out the gameplay.

I took out 2x Beastbreaker of Bala Ged, 2x Kazandu Tuskcaller, 1x Lighthouse Chronologist, 1x Venerated Teacher, 4x Experimental Augury, and 1x Drown in Ichor and in their place I added 2x Reject Imperfection, 4x Serum Snare, 4x Sheoldred's Edict, and 1x Training Grounds.

The deck feels a lot better to play now as I’m not always swamped with so many level up creatures that it becomes impossible to level them all up and I can usually control the board long enough to fully pump up a threat or two. It still needs some work and further play testing to smooth out more of the wrinkles, but I think what I have here is a good start.

How are you finding the deck with the changes you’ve made?
