Sheoldred's Edict

Instant

Choose one —

  • Each opponent sacrifices a nontoken creature.
  • Each opponent sacrifices a creature token.
  • Each opponent sacrifices a planeswalker.

Gatekeeper of Malakir is Sheoldred's Edict.

Since you're going so low to the ground, I would test out Aether Vial and see if that's something you like.

Bloodghast's landfall ability is hella busted. Prismatic Vista (or Fabled Passage if you're on a more sensible budget) could work amazing. Maybe Evolving Wilds can work in your meta if it's more laid back. The sacrifice trigger also works well with Fatal Push.

good point, but they usually have another creature out anyway, so Sheoldred's Edict is normally useless as well

Fatal Push is probably better than Sheoldred's Edict

I mean, the guys deck can't be particularly good or it would have had some form of meta recognition by now - a 70% win rate would be absurdly high.

In any case, it should be trivial to beat whatever he's planning:

  • Counterspells do nothing to stop board wipes like Supreme Verdict

  • Graveyard hate in modern is super easy to come by and extremely trivial to include. Relic of Progenitus is perfectly main-boardable, and if you're especially worried about his graveyard shenanigans, there's Dauthi Voidwalker, Leyline of the Void, Surgical Extraction, etc. There's also Extirpate which he can neither counter nor respond to.

  • I'm not buying the statement that his 2 card combo will prevent sacrifice, unless he's referring to targeted-sacrifice, and is planning on granting himself hexproof. In any case Sheoldred's Edict and Flare of Malice are incredibly hard to prevent happening.

  • you could just ignore whatever nonsense he's doing entirely and perform a combo win that doesn't require interacting with him at all, aka something with Thassa's Oracle

Overall though, this "combo" sounds a lot like a house-of-playing-cards... in that it's going to collapse at the smallest hurdle. I imagine it's not going to be particularly fast, so if you're playing any aggro or combo deck with even adequate speed you should out-race him. And with the amount of information he's given you, it should be trivial to disrupt the pieces he needs to do anything if you're playing control. If you're playing midrange there's a change he can get setup before you can do your thing, but if that's the case the above suggestions should stop him from doing anything.

If price is truly no limit and you're really wanting to crush his dreams then just pick any current modern-competitive deck at complete-random and I'm sure you'll come out on top

Some thoughts:

If I were trying to build a deck like this, I'd be using the following as a base:

SufferFromEDHD +1

Forbidden Orchard - To always have a creature to target/destroy + politics

Lashwrithe > Nightmare lash - Option to use mana to equip + comes with a token attached.

Sword of Wealth and Power/Glamdring > Spellbinder - High equip cost, chance for 2 for 1, and requires instants in hand. The casting without paying is nice but I believe having your commander be pro instants + sorceries is huge as they need to interact prior to combat. Not to mention the first strike on Glamdring.

Demonic Tutor > Mastermind's acquisition?

Shizo, Death's Storehouse > Swamp

Sheoldred's Edict - Removal with an option

Defile - Not needed but can pack a punch

Dismember - A bit expensive but flexible. Might be worth noting

Grim Return - Cute, especially with ETB effects

Force of Despair - Interact while tapped out

Dash Hopes - How has this been playing for you? Seems like they just lose 5 life for 2 mana.

Liability - Is this impactful enough? I feel it can backfire and the upside isn't incredibly strong. Although, it does wreck token decks with a board wipe.

Mirrorpool - One of my favorite cards! What is your target with it usually, I don't see any incredible payoffs.

All good! Yeah it's easy to get carried away with traditional death trigger synergies for Vren given he straight-up bypasses them. It's both a really cool hate piece against enemy aristocrat strategies, but it also means you can't actually take advantage of stuff like Ogre Slumlord and his ilk.

Stuff like Accursed Marauder might be reasonable tho. The problem is that I have a hard time recovering and recycling creatures that aren't specifically Vren in this deck, so it's probably better that I use Instant-speed spells that hit nontoken creatures like Sheoldred's Edict since I'll only be able to use it one time anyway.

That said, Accursed Marauder saccing himself while I already have a Grave Pact effect out does start a chain that forces each opponent to sac yet another creature after he resolves, so there's that to consider. I do want to ensure nontokens get sacced and exiled tho, so cards like Demonic Disciple don't exactly make the cut.

Death Cloud actually seems really spicy too, tho Im not sure if I'll be able to sink as much mana as I need to really take advantage of it.
