My goal with this project is to make a "universal" Ravnica cube that uses cards from all the Ravnica blocks as well as cards from other sets that depict creatures or events on Ravnica or characters that originate from Ravnica.

This section is a list of all the Ravnica-related cards from other sets I considered. This is not a definitive list of Ravnica-adjacent cards, since some (like Infectious Bloodlust ) are obvious exclusions. Many of these were found through this wiki page as well as Scryfall's Tagger.

Since these are a little iffy in terms of whether the individual cards tie into Ravnica, I'm only including cards that could pass as Ravnica cards in their current state. Specifically, this means excluding cards named for another plane regardless of mechanics ( Dakmor Salvage ), art that doesn't look like it would fit in a Ravnica set ( Force Spike ), or quotes from a resident of another plane ( Dissipate ).

The main concern here is that the mechanics of some of these cards don't fit with the rest of the cube. In order to maintain cohesion, very few of those cards will make it in, particularly the ones with keywords that don't show up on Ravnica.

Card choices

I am not a fan of how Planeswalkers tend to warp gameplay around themselves, and the Ravnica sets do not have them balanced across the different colors, so they will not be included in the cube. This has not changed with the release of War of the Spark, though walkers with only minus abilities are much more likely to make it in someday since they function more like enchantments/sagas than conventional Planeswalkers.
Originally, I thought I would go with as many cycles as I could, but their power levels are very inconsistent, so there are few complete cycles left. I will be working to complete more in the future using custom cards.
WAR added many possibilities for the cube, but to keep a consistent theme, I'm going to try to only use cards that feel like they could be in one of the other Ravnica sets. This means no Dreadhorde, God-Eternals, or non-Ravnicans in the art unless they've been significantly tied to the plane in the past (eg. Gideon has allied himself with the Boros before). I'd also like to avoid cards that refer to the Dreadhorde or the war in general in their flavor text, but that's less of a concern. Here's the breakdown I came up with:

Cards that wouldn't feel out-of-place in a non-WAR Ravnica set (assuming we had seen Proliferate, vehicles, etc)

Lessons learned:

Mill doesn't seem like a viable archetype without much more support than I'm willing to put in. As a result, I'm removing most mill cards, leaving only cards that can win on their own, eg. Mind Grind , Mirko Vosk, Mind Drinker and Consuming Aberration .

After some testing, it seems the legendaries from Commander are too weak without their EDH decks to support them.

For the future:

I am considering some Conspiracy cards to spice up the draft.

Mana base is a unique challenge to Ravnica since there is such a dual-color focus. It could be cool to give everyone access to all the guildgates they want in addition to basic lands, then run some Maze's End .
