Step 1: Cast Worldfire.

Step 2: With Worldfire on the stack, activate ability of either: Blisterspit Gremlin, Brimstone Trebuchet, Lightning-Rig Crew, Lobber Crew, Nettle Drone or Thermo-Alchemist.

Step 3: With ability and Worldfire on the stack, cast either: Dualcaster Mage, Fork, Fury Storm, Increasing Vengeance, Reiterate, Reverberate or Wild Ricochet targeting Worldfire.

Off-color options: Basilica Guards, Basilica Screecher, Blind Obedience, Crypt Ghast, Kingpin's Pet, Syndic of Tithes, Thrull Parasite, Tithe Drinker, Witherbloom Apprentice, Refuse / Cooperate, Insidious Will, Narset's Reversal, Twincast, Naru Meha, Master Wizard.

(This is by no means an exhaustive list, it just happens to be the best mana-cost effective cards I could find.)

Thanks for the suggestions, certainly worth taking a look at.

As to the "80% Dark Ritual Deck" comment, I was speaking specifically about my playgroup & that is not an exaggeration or estimate. Pauper games in our group were getting really repetitive and predictable so we opted to do away with them; I can totally recognize that is by no means a universal standard.

I've got some Extort already on Tithe Drinker but another source from Kingpin's Pet isn't an awful idea. I'm not sold that Dark Ritual fits here since I've got relatively low mana costs and very little cyclical card draw. It's not an entirely bad idea, but it'd only really be useful when playing a Night's Whisper imo.

Nightsky Mimic is a great suggestion, and I'm surprised I forgot about him considering I used him in an old deck.

I don't like the idea of running 4 Castigate because it's mainly a deterrent against things my creature can't handle or against counterspell effects. I guess I just don't see another copy making or breaking the deck.

Took some of your suggestions to heart though, going to give it a try in this current updated incarnation and see how it goes. Thanks again!

That description is very amusing - 80% of pauper decks using Dark Ritual is just not the case - not even mono-black control plays a single copy of the card, let alone any other tier 1 or tier 2 archetype.

Regardless, the dark ritual would be probably be a good addition here, but there are multiple better ones.

First, a fourth copy of the namesake card of the deck - Edge of Divinity there is no way to play less than 4 in this deck. Second, you need 4 copies of Nightsky Mimic - the best creature for that archetype.

Since mimic needs orzhov colored spells to work I suggest kicking out any non-orzhov cards as well. - 4 pilgrim (too slow anyways), - 3 umbra (that is just a much worse version of Edge), - 4 charms. Night's whisper is the only good mono-color card, but no room for non-orzhov. Since we are getting rid of bad cards, -2 harvest gwyllon as well, one of the worst orzhov cards.

That is a total of 17 cards to get rid of and I already suggested 5, so you need 12 more.

  • 4 Gift of Orzhova - now that is an aura worth its salt.
  • 1 castigate - might as well play the full 4.
  • 4 Kingpin's Pet - a flier and a source of damage even when not attacking.
  • 3 Unmake - get that removal in there

The sideboard could also be orzhov only, but that might be a bit too much. And I would not play so many comes into play tapped lands.

In addition, I think this pauper version of the deck is probably better than the non-pauper one in every metric other than mana base.

Ah, what is there to dislike about life gain? The deck looks sweet, however, I do have some suggestions.

Whilst Exstort is a lovely mechanic, I feel as if many of these creatures are lacking. Basilica Guards, Kingpin's Pet, Knight of Obligation, Thrull Parasite, and Syndicate Enforcer all just have egregious stats. Similarly, Resplendent Mentor is a five Mana 2/2 that doesn't do something immediately unless you have a board state.

Armillary Sphere doesn't do much. You probably prefer to cast your commander than paying four and finding two basics.

Endless Scream is far too much Mana for what it does in my opinion. Same with Howl from Beyond.

Linden, the Steadfast Queen just seems awesome in here, as does Shadowspear and Loxodon Warhammer. Ivory Tower and Revenge of Ravens could be interesting.

You have quite a bit of creature based removal, thus you may wish for dealing with other permanents. Despark, Generous Gift, and Disenchant are all great.

That's all from me. Good luck!

It's looking great...maybe you can find room for Trespasser's Curse ? I would main board Kingpin's Pet for more extort plus it's another flyer. Consider Pillory of the Sleepless to nerf a big threat and add to the loss-of-life effects.

The simple rules of simple deckbuilding that i just came up with simply on the spot:

1/ Identify how you want to win.
2/ Play 4 copies of the 9 cards that best support that.
3/ Add 24 lands.
4/ ???
5/ Profit!

In all seriousness, this is good way to start out in deckbuilding without too much hassle. From what you have currently, lifegaining and extorting are your key players and the deck has a low curve and is aggressive. lets focus on that. Fair warning, I am introducing some new cards! Lets see:

4 Tithe Drinker - extort
4 Kingpin's Pet - extort
4 Nightsky Mimic - key player!
4 Edge of Divinity - key player!
1 Blood Baron of Vizkopa - you have it already, but 5 mana is a lot, so 1 copy is plenty.
3 Gift of Orzhova - makes racing so much easier.
4 Unmake - key removal!
3 Orzhov Charm - small dudes removal.
1 Anguished Unmaking - pricy, but quite good!
4 Tidehollow Sculler - gets their hand and is another BW creature.
6 cards of your choice between Sin Collector, Pillory of the Sleepless and Drana's Emissary, Undying Evil, Ulcerate, Castigate, Sign in Blood, Ajani's Pridemate or mix betweeen them.

22 lands

What is deck doing and why am I not following my own advices? The 4x9 non-lands + 24 lands is a good thing starting out. As you continue building more decks, you realize it is good, but limiting. In a deck full of 2 and 3 drops, you have no need for 4 Blood Baron of Vizkopa, for example. Same with lands - if you have only 1 card that costs 5 to cast, 24 lands is a bit too much.

TLDR: 9X4 + 24 is good basis, just make some tweaks from there.

Definitely suggest swapping in a Kingpin's Pet for a Basilica Guards for a little more proactivity while keeping the number of extort abilities.

Also suggest Unmake as the strongest pauper removal you'll find in W/B, and Pillory of the Sleepless in place of Bonds of Faith and Stab Wound.

With the reprint in MM17, Gift of Orzhova is a neat enchantment to slap onto a creature.
