Rakdos Ickspitter

Creature — Thrull

Tap: Rakdos Ickspitter deals 1 damage to target creature and that creature's controller loses 1 life.

Hi. I love the concept of this deck. I originally doubted Xantcha's ability as a commander, but now I see her true potential. As this deck is duocoloured, I would highly reccomend Seal of the Guildpact as an include: it, as you asked for, accelerates your deck, as it makes your spells cheaper to play, and as such you have more mana free to play more spells to finish the game faster. I would suggest Rakdos Ickspitter with Xantcha as it's target, as the 1 damage will not kill her, and it also drains life from her controller. It is also a free ability, so you do not have to expend mana on it apart from the casting of the creature itself. It's also a chump blocker for your pillowfort. Ashenmoor Liege, as it buffs your black and red creatures and repels opponents from getting rid of it, while also being a fair costed 4/4 that can be cast even if you're screwed for either black or red mana. Finally: Rakdos's Return, because we want to get rid of any card advantage they've got and make them lose life.

Archetype of Aggression would help you more than Bloodfray GiantCarnival Hellsteed and Cryptborn Horror don't do as much as they should for their cost/conditions. Have you considered War Elemental and Kolaghan, the Storm's Fury instead? Also, Rakdos Ickspitter, Gore-House Chainwalker, and Splatter Thug could easily be cut out for effects that boost other, better creatures. Not to mention that haste providers like Mass Hysteria become dead draws once you have a way to put +1/+1 counters on creatures entering the battlefield (such as Drana or Necropolis Regent). Also, Caldera Hellion, Mephidross Vampire, Retribution of the Ancients, Grenzo, Dungeon Warden or Flesh Carver?

I would say the biggest problem with this Rakdos, Lord of Riots build is the lack or cheap sources of early damage that cost no mana to activate by the time you have the needed to drop Rakdos, Lord of Riots. Rakdos Ickspitter, Spiteful Returned, Mardu Shadowspear, and Goblin Fireslinger are the only cards I see that guarantee damage assuming they have blockers. I would Up the count of cards that do this job to at least 10, If you do that you can afford to convert the rest of these dinky creatures to the Plethera of beat sticks that this guild has access to. Other worthwhile cards for this job are Cinder Pyromancer, Cunning Sparkmage, Dauthi Slayer, Goblin Arsonist, Honden of Infinite Rage, Lobber Crew, Mogg Fanatic, Nettle Drone, Goblin Sharpshooter, and Tunneling Geopede.

To cast Rakdos, Lord of Riots you need to be 100% sure of dealing combat damage at turn 4. It really depends on what kind of opponent you're facing. If your little damagers are blocked or removed, no Rakdos, Lord of Riots for you.

You can also design other ways to do free damage at turn 4. Examples are countless:

The other route is "not casting it":

  • Fleshwrither's unique put-into-play-from-library ability that works because both rakdos and this horrific guy cost 4 mana total (not doable on turn 4)

  • using things that let you put it into play from your hand like Through the Breach or Quicksilver Amulet

  • putting Rakdos into the graveyard and reanimating it directly into play. This is the way Reanimator decks cheat powerful creatures (Griselbrand) into play. You have to: (1) find your Rakdos from your library and (2) put him into your graveyard, (3) reanimate it, (4) in some cases find a way to dodge the reanimation spell drawbacks. It's tricky, see that a deck that does this needs the whole deck built around this single combo (http://www.channelfireball.com/articles/grishoalbrand-deck-tech-and-guide/)

I recommend the two following articles:

  • how to handle Rakdos Lord of Riots (http://www.gatheringmagic.com/andrew-wilson-rakdos-return-to-ravnica-keyword-121112-paincast/)

  • suggestions for a Rakdos Commander list (http://legitmtg.com/casual/their-agony-and-the-ecstasy/) that has a huge number of synergic card suggestions (not always modern-legal eh!)

My understanding of pauper is cursory at best, so please take what I say with a grain of salt.

A lot of people see Gurmag Angler and sideboard against it, what I think may be a good package for your colours is running cards such ass Rakdos Ickspitter, Goblin Deathraiders, and Rakdos Shred-Freak (or any other cheap, somewhat aggressive rakdos coloured creature) with a killer efficient card for pauper (I think): Fists of the Demigod, if you can't kill a creature immediately you can wear it down, and if you can kill a creature immediately it can't trade! I know auras typically have a 2-for-1 issue and I have been known to really love auras a lot, but this seems really good for your deck to help get damage through or kill creatures, both things you want.

Kaervek the Merciless and Ob Nixilis, Unshackled are both very cool options, but as a way to enable damage to be dealt, Kaervek is very expensive and would really act more like a win-more card. With Ob, it's a harder argument, and I wouldn't mind running him, but as a damage enabler, he wouldn't be reliable. The only people I play against who use lots of fetch lands and tutor abilities actually run a lot of removal, so it would just get blown up immediately.

Steel Hellkite I was on the fence about because I couldn't decide what I wanted out for it, but seeing as how its one of the only ways to deal with enchantments for a black red deck, I like it in this deck for sure.

As for getting damage off during my opponents' turns, I don't think that'll be a problem. Playing this deck might make me public enemy number one sometimes, but not 100% of the time, meaning they will eventually attack each other. Plus, if I have a way to deal damage without one of my pingers, I can just save it for their turn, tap my Lobber Crew or Rakdos Ickspitter and just flash in whatever I can from there. There's also the effects of Tainted Remedy when anybody tries to gain any life, or Visions of Brutality for when someone tries to attack me with their heavy hitter. There's also the options of running Pyrohemia, Manabarbs, or Burning Earth.

I definitely agree with you on the haste point too. I imagine with any white or black opponents that I'd get used to seeing a lot of board clear before it rotates around to my turn for attacking with my creatures. I'd definitely consider running Anger, Ogre Battledriver, Fervor, Emblem of the Warmind, or Mass Hysteria. Of those options, what do you think would work the best and what might you remove from the board for it?

Hmm some cards like Vulshok Sorcerer, Rakdos Ickspitter, or Cunning Sparkmage are all pretty good pingers if you can get them deathtouch.
