Heavy Mattock Discussion

Darkshadow327 on LGS has Japanese Dark Ascension ...

So I was able to visit my LGS earlier this evening and get 2 packs, this is what I got (you would be interested in this DiverDown):

Overall opening this pack was pretty cool. It was suspenseful too since I didn't know what most of the cards were (I did recognize a few by art).

You might want to add Champion of the Parish. I would also take out Heavy Mattock. Just because it synergises with humans doesn't mean there isn't something better out there. Your manabase could also be edited if you don't care about budget. You could add Clifftop Retreat, Rugged Prairie, Needle Spires, Temple of Triumph, Battlefield Forge, and Sacred Foundry.

You have no card draw, which can't be helped very much as boros, but try adding things like Mind Stone, Hedron Archive, and Commander's Sphere.

I didn't see any boardwipes, which are crucial, so definitely add those. Fated Retribution, Cleansing Nova, and Citywide Bust are a few.

I would run Sylvok Lifestaff over one of the Scimitar variants, and I'd throw in True-Faith Censer over the Heavy Mattock. Ward of Lights is another good protection enchantment, and I think Heroic Defiance could be really good.

I'd recommend outing all the human tribal for your lands. Harvest Hand  Flip, Heavy Mattock, and Avacyn's Collar. And you do know this is a modern deck, right?

Thanks TheMadRocketeer This deck is really fun it holds its own early then once Odric, Lunarch Marshal spreads flying and double strike to the whole field it gets very powerful really the only choice my opponent have is to board wipe because its impossible to block effectively. And Heavy Mattock is a great suggestion I actually used to have it in the deck and i haven't tried him in it in a long time. it would really help keep the weaker creatures alive.

I love this. +1. There are some good items in here I've either not seen yet or else haven't looked at right. I'm sure I'd have remembered Odric, Lunarch Marshal, though. That guy screams to have a deck built around him. I'll bet this is a ton of fun to play. I see you have Fencing Ace. One of my sons includes him in a deck that has a fair bit of equipment in it. One thing he loves to do in it is to equip the Ace with Heavy Mattock. That yields a double-striking 3/3, which is great, but the mental picture of a fencing master dueling with a heavy mattock is just hilarious. I used to have a / deck. Looks like it's time to do another one. I'm feeling inspired. :-)

Ok, ok. I concede to the wave of "literal names for the bill". As far as the original Innistard and this one go, things like Heavy Mattock and Magnifying Glass are fine. I understand the purpose and when it comes down to it that's exactly what they are. Not a Lovecraft fan, so the "mystique" of naming Thing in the Ice  Flip just that is lost on me. I get what you're getting at, it's just not my thing. I mean, I wouldn't call the Magnifying Glass anything too myth like, making it a legendary thing: "Jace Spy Disk of Brilliance".

0 mana to cast. "Opponents play with their libraries revealed and aren't allowed to draw cards. During oppinent's upkeep they exile their library and shuffle their pocket lint into their library. Shuffle their library into your library and draw 100 cards."

I understand the absurdity of that...it just struck me as, hmm this is a bit strange. Everything is named exactly as it is. Maybe the fact that the Elsrazi have such crazy names like Breaker of Armies, Bearer of Silence, etc. the "bland" names came off weird. I think some of them are comical by comparison.
