Courier's Capsule Discussion

Hey landgo

You are right about the Thrull Surgeon. I tend to play 2HG mostly, so I always try to find a way to strip my opponents hands of any counterspells. The biggest thing I like about the Thrull is that it can take lands too.

A reason to add Courier's Capsule would be to diversify the types in the graveyard. My list runs a lot of creatures I want to get back, so I place it being an artifact over a creature type. I guess it's up to anyone's fine tuning.

The Possessed Portal has one thing over the other lock pieces in where it prevents your opponents from finding an answer. The "each turn" and "each player" combination is especially though and requires an immediate answer, which means they need to have that in hand at that moment, or have a tutor effect available.

Traveler247, when I first started looking for cards to use with Muldrotha, the Gravetide I made the mistake of thinking certain cards could go "infinite", failing to realise you can only play one type each turn. Is your example subject to the same mistake or did you call it "infinite" for a different reason?

To clarify a bit Artifacts also follow the rules of colour identity. Godsend or Blinding Souleater would be legal with your commander--the former has a White color identity as a component of its mana cost, and the latter as a component of its activated ability. Contrarily Courier's Capsule and Evolution Vat would not be legal, as they do not have White colour identities.

I run Sigil of the Empty Throne in a deck that is 43% enchantments--it has been a powerful finisher in that deck, but the deck's construction is absurdly skewed toward enchantments. I am not sure it would work well in most other decks, but wanted to mention it as you wanted an angelic theme.

Paradox Engine + Isochron Scepter allows for some infinite combos if you are running a large number of mana rocks. You can use it for casting Holy Day on each opponents' turn in the early game, and eventually use to pump out infinite mana, for cards such as Entreat the Angels (which fits the angel host theme you said you wanted).

Some other cards to consider:

  • Mesa Enchantress - card advantage
  • Lightmine Field - strong pillowfort card, particularly against wide decks. However, if your win condition involves attacking with lots of creatures, you might want to forgo this one.
  • Darksteel Mutation - removes an enemy commander without giving the opponent an option to return the target to the command zone.
  • Consulate Crackdown - remove their mana rocks, and any remaining threat your opponents might be.

You'll probably want at least some of Courier's Capsule, Executioner's Capsule and Dispeller's Capsule in there! Card draw and removal are at a premium in pauper.

Aether Spellbomb and Origin Spellbomb might also do the trick. The Origin Spellbomb can give you four Sludge Strider triggers and even replace itself.

So long as it's your wincon, you might as well double down and run Disciple of the Vault as well. I'd also recommend Vedalken Engineer to help ensure you can afford all of those extra costs! And I know that they have a way to sacrifice themselves which is nice, but I still might recommend the Signets over the Cluestones just to keep your curve down.

A bit more low end ramp in general will help make the deck faster. Cards like Sakura-Tribe Elder, Rampant Growth and Fellwar Stone are all good choices.

Having only a few counterspells seems not worth it, I would drop them for more card advantage and just value your opponents out. Stuff like Courier's Capsule is really godo as you can spread out the cost of the drawing over two turns.

I like the idea of the deck! I would say that Inventors' Fair is probably a better card in this deck than Phyrexia's Core because it'll most likely gain you life every turn, and even better, it can fetch an artifact card like Salvage Titan from you deck by sacrificing it. You probably want 4 Executioner's Capsules in the deck and maybe some number of Courier's Capsules, because they fit the artifacts in the graveyard theme, and they help you get ahead on board or with cards in hand! Another couple of cards you might consider that are fairly popular in standard right now are Glint-Nest Crane and Metalwork Colossus. Both of those are cards I could see fitting in here nicely. I get the idea behind the Ironclad Revolutionary, Secret Salvage and Defiant Salvager, but I think they could be easy cards to cut. Most of your artifacts already give you benefits to sacrifice them with their own abilities, so you probably don't need to sacrifice them to other abilities. Secret Salvage is a very high priced cmc and it requires you to have 4 of any card you would want to target with it (or else it isn't even worth it) and it requires one of them to be in the graveyard. Ovalchase Daredevil could be a good recurring creature in a deck like this as well, plus you dont have any cards currently filling the 4 mana cost card slot in your deck. Ultimately it's your deck, and you should put whatever 60 cards you want in there! who cares how good or bad it is if you have fun playing.
