Neotrup on Timing of equip with Valduk's …

Generally no. Valduk, Keeper of the Flame creates the tokens at the beginning of combat step. It's too late to activate equip abilities as they can only be activated during your main phase while the stack is empty. If you control Leonin Shikari, you'd be able to equip after making the token, due to removing that timing restriction. Some equipment like Sparring Collar have an ability that allows you to move it without using the equip ability.

Looking at some party cards, the problem I'm coming across is lack of synergy but I'll recommend some anyway. You really want your commander out early with as many ETBs as you have and being how aggressive he is.

Grenzo, Dungeon Warden: Rogue. Gives you a decent body with repeatable card advantage.

Grenzo, Havoc Raiser: Rogue. Either card advantage or point the biggest (or weakest utility) creature at another player.

Rankle, Master of Pranks: Another rogue. Less synergistic but he has three modes and haste. Plus, you can choose as many modes as you like.

Neheb, Dreadhorde Champion: Warrior. Red ramp and card fixing.

Priest of Forgotten Gods: Cleric. Potential card advantage and removal plus ramp.

Kazuul, Tyrant of the Cliffs: Warrior. Provides plenty of deathtouch chump blockers with your commander.

Mikaeus, the Unhallowed: Cleric. Allows all of your creatures to die once and come back. Plus, kills any human that gets through.

Gonti, Lord of Luxury: Rouge. Neat. Not the greatest in a vacuum but replaces himself, normally with something good.

Anarchist: Wizard. If you get more spells then maybe.

Cinder Seer: Wizard. Not the best pinger but a pinger nonetheless.

Coffin Queen: Wizard. Playable effect.

Dismissive Pyromancer: Wizard. Decent rummage affect and can take one guy out.

Embermage Goblin: Wizard. Not the best pinger but possibly playable. Hits any target.

Fervent Paincaster: Wizard. Hits creatures.

Fireslinger: Wizard. Best pinger so far at 2 cmc. Hits any target.

Nezumi Graverobber: Rogue/Wizard. Starts off as a graveyard hating rogue and turns into a grave stealing wizard.

Going through cards and the party subtheme seems a bit sad. Some of the above are decent but there isn't a ton to go on in my opinion.

On the first strke though, there are a million cheap red spells that grant first strike temporarily as an instant or as an enchantment. I would recommend running 1 or 2 of the instants to keep opponents on their toes when they think about blocking you.

As for creatures,

Soul of Shandalar: Mana wise, not the best. But can ping and has built in first strike.

Sparring Collar: Cheap first strike and can be attached instant speed to either dissuade blocks/attacks or murder something.

Sword of Vengeance: I don't think its as good as above due to not being able to move at instant speed, but it grants vigilance as well. It is nice to keep a first strike flying blocker up after it attacks.

Akki Coalflinger: Way to help out the team.

Legion Loyalist: Way to help out the team. (My favorite of the team helping bunch).

Bloodmark Mentor: Way to help out half of the team.

Akroma's Memorial. Expensive but a classic.

I think a couple or few first strike options would work out. As for cards that I think you could do better than,

Bloodgift Demon: Good card but his effect is a bit expensive for card advantage. Maybe try Theater of Horrors. Its essentially the same as phyrexian arena but for rakdos.

Endbringer: Potentially a great card but I wouldn't count on using his other effects with as little colorless mana sources that you have.

Master of Cruelties: Can be good but typically best if saved for kalia combos. He shuts down attacking with everyone else which limits you to dealing with one opponent at a time.

Rakdos Firewheeler: Not bad but repeatable effects may be better.

The Custom Categories have been updated with a "Living Weapon" section, including

I think these are the coolest way to take advantage of Akiri's ability for as few cards as possible, and I expect to see this line-up and probably more of the 4-6 cmcm ones in most Akiri lists.

I'm still looking to better take advantage of Akiri's protection ability. Leonin Shikari will help with that, and there's some instant-speed-equiping equipment/enablers out there like Healer's Headdress, Sparring Collar, Auriok Windwalker, Brass Squire, Magnetic Theft... do these all seem worth it? What are y'alls thoughts?

koylucumert on instant speed first strike problems

so lets say I and my opponent each have a 2/2 and a 3/3. and I have a Sparring Collar . I attack with both of them with the 3/3 equipped with the collar. opponent blocks 3/3 with 3/3 and 2/2 with 2/2. no creature has first strike except the one with the collar. so first strike damage happens and i kill the 3/3. before normal damage step? what happens if i use the collar to transfer it to the 2/2. will i have saved my 2/2 or theirs or neither?

Thanks for all the responses so far. The suggestions are super helpful.

@WhichKing, no Purphoros, at least, not right now. I'm going pretty budget with this one, and its not a card I have.

@ZendikariWol, I do like Prowler's Helm, and have added it to my maybeboard along with Strata Scythe, Kitesail, and a few of the others. I'm teetering on Sundial of the Infinite. I like it, but I'm just not sure I want to go that rout...yet. I did have Tooth and Claw initially, but cut it for more equipment. It may go back in yet. Also, thanks for the note on Stalking Vengeance; I missed that entirely, so that's an easy cut. Warstorm Surge is coming to take its place. I'm on the fence about keeping Barrage of Expendables around. Skeleton Key is mainly in for the card draw, not the skulking ability. Good info on Browbeat and Sparring Collar. I'll cut the Collar for sure. I wasn't sure on Browbeat, but man, red needs card draw. But, I'll look into something else. Thanks for taking the time to look through all the equipment in Magic for this! There are a lot of really good budget options in there. When throwing equipment into this deck, I tried to make sure I was getting equipment with more than just a power/toughness bonus, and to get some other ability along the way, i.e., hexproof, trample, double strike, unblockable, etc.

@Heliogabale, I do like Basilisk Collar, and I may add it down the road. Deathouch is nice. I'm not running the spell cheapeners, mainly so I can run more equipment, and most of that isn't terribly high CMC anyways. Sure, it'd be nice to get it for free, and I'd do that in a build with someone like Sram, Senior Edificer, but for Valduk, I'm not as worried about it.

Thanks again, everyone. This was super helpful.

Vicious Shadows actually doesn't work (nor does Stalking Vengeance, and for the same reason), because when a creature (or in this instance a token) doesn't die when it's exiled. I would suggest Warstorm Surge instead. Which I just noticed was in the maybeboard. Speaking of cards in the maybeboard, Swiftfoot Boots is probably better than Lightning Greaves here because shroud makes Valduk untargetable for equip costs. This would normally not be a problem; just equip it to a different creature for 0 mana. However with a semi-creatureless brew like this you'd have to do all your equipping on the postcombat main phase.

I might suggest some of the human-based equipment from OG Innistrad; Avacyn's Collar, Bladed Bracers, Butcher's Cleaver, Heirloom Blade could be really cool (and you could run a human or two for good measure), Sharpened Pitchfork is nice, though first strike is kinda useless, Silver-Inlaid Dagger is AWESOME, and Slayer's Plate may get some work done.

Some generally good equipments include Champion's Helm for hexproof, Chitinous Cloak to force opponents to make tough blocker choices, honestly General's Kabuto may be worth is as the ultimate protection card, you could consider Kitesail for evasion, Konda's Banner would be great and pump your tokens (and yes it would give Valduk +2/+2), Kusari-Gama would be a serious 'don't block me or I fuck you' effect, Ogre's Cleaver is honestly insane, Pariah's Shield, though costly, more or less makes you untouchable, Pennon Blade is worth the cost, the classic Short Sword, Sigiled Sword of Valeron is dece, Skullclamp is OH MY GOD, Strata Scythe is equally insane, the swords are famously insanely powerful, Trusty Machete is okay, Vorrac Battlehorns is an easy way to win fast, and Vulshok Battlegear and Vulshok Morningstar are decent.

And yes, I did slog through every equipment in Magic history to find those.

Props to Heliogabale for some good ideas on cuts. I might add No-Dachi, seems a little overcosted (also it's worth noting Mask of Avacyn has the same mana specs for an arguably better effect), Skeleton Key is not going to do anything for very long, Valduk is probably going to be too big too fast to make use of first strike (@ Sparring Collar), Browbeat is 5 damage to an opponent for 3 mana. Realistically no one is going to let you draw 3 cards.

Sorry, this comment was a looong one.

A few comments. First, what in the **** is your meta where this needs to be a thing? I'm just...kind blown away that you would need to be absolutely this fast. Anyway, card suggestions:

Easy includes off the top of my head are Doomfall, Plaguecrafter (strictly better than Fleshbag Marauder), Phyrexian Obliterator, maybe Crypt Ghast for more mana, Glaring Spotlight and Arcane Lighthouse (lay down the hate on hexproof), and Sudden Spoiling (can't be countered)! Also, you can't play Sparring Collar in mono black.

What I think would be good idea: these are cards I think are solid, but might not be fast enough for you. The Eldest Reborn, Abyssal Gatekeeper, Shriekmaw, Phyrexian Scriptures, and Dread.

I also think some better card draw would be useful, and Phyrexian Arena isn't that great if the games are going very short. Instead, consider instant effects like Ambition's Cost, Ancient Craving, Dark Prophecy, Night's Whisper, Read the Bones, or Midnight Reaper.

I know you want everything to be cheap, but I'd recommend at least a few spells that can serve as bombs if the game gets to later rounds. Maybe something like Exsanguinate, Killing Wave, or Torment of Hailfire.

If you're interested in the combo, go for Mikaeus + Walking Ballista. :)

I also thought of Leonin Bladetrap, though that card isn't great...

Finally, quick question. In the description you mention equipment that grants deathtouch, but I don't see any in the actual deck. Is that still something you wanted to do?
