Just got bumped out of fourth at the end of the evening. That's a really good showing for my newbie butt.
last 3 FNM's playing this deck went 5/0 (after adding ratchet bomb) 4/1 (tempered steel) 4/1 (tempered steel)
I came to this tournament, planning on useing a lorwyn merfolk wizard deck for the win. I then realize that i had grabbed the wrong deck. Looks like I was stuck playing Standard in an Extended Tournament. I was running W/U Caw Blade, as a last horrah for Stoneforge.
Round One: White Control - Luminarch As.
Game 1: LOSS I was set with a bad opening hand after a muligan down to 6 cards. I had 2 land in this hand, so i decided to keep. Well, i never saw another land after that. After my opponent won hands down with only Man-Lands (How Embaressing), I was finished on turn 8.
Game 2: WIN I guess what comes around goes around. I don't know what my opponent was doing here. I easily finished him off fast with a turn 2 stone forge, turn 3 mirran crusader, and t4 putting War and Peace into play and putting it on the crusader for an easy turn 5 win.
Game 3: LOSS Not knowing what was in his deck, i decided once again not to sideboard. BIG mistake. He went first with a turn 2 luminarch. He then mopped up with removal and counter spells for 4 turns until his luminarch hit 4. It was gone after that.
ROUND 2: This was a younger player(9 or 10 years old) and he was playing a green black infect. From previous experience against this, i was expecting a lot. He never played too much though and they were 2 easy wins. I won't even bother with the game details.
Game 1: WIN Game 2: WIN
Round 3: I had just watched this guy play a match so I knew what to expect. He was running a B/U artifact control Infect.
Game 1: WIN (Barely) I went first with a fairly solid hand. Stoneforge, Hawks, and a Feast/Famine to boot. However, this guy was packing. He knew the stoneforge was coming and saved a mana leak for it. He hit me for 1 infect with inkmoth the following turn, and i put out the sword. He follows with another inkmoth and another 1 infect and a sun of the spheres. Forseeing another mana leak, i played my first hawk, which got countered so i was left with the other hawk in my hand. His next turn, he pops out tezzeret and makes his inkmoth a 5/5. I nervously let hit hit me to put me at 7. My next turn, i put out 1 more hawk and equip the sword, then swing. He discards and i untap my land and put out another hawk. I then journey the inkmoth. He never could come back after that.
Game 2: WIN Getting my sideboard in with 3 revoke existanse to fend off the artifacts and 2 celestial purges (for tezz). It was an easy win. He put out tez turn 4 and made a plague myr a 5/5. Next turn, i revoke the myr and purge tezz. I won in 2 more turns after that.
Round 4: BYE? My guy sat down, got a text message from someone, then said he had to leave.(It seemed really important. and he was ranked somewhat high in our area.) I gave him 1 game win out of humbleness and took the 2-1 win.
FINALS: I placed 4th, and made it to the top 4(just barely)
SEMI's: Damn. I'm playing the #1 Guy who was also the guy who beat me in the first round.
Game 1: I was nervous since i didn't have my sideboard in yet, but my deck played fast enough with a turn 3 batterskull, a mana leak on his into the roil kicked turn 4, and by turn 5, i had a germ token with batterskull, body/mind, and war/peace. I won quickly after countering all his colors into protection.
Game 2: I couldn't have asked for a better hand. TURN 1: Kor Duelist. Turn 2 Stoneforge. Turn 3, turn aside on the path, and putting the war and peace into play. Turn 4: Equip and Swing. 3/3 double strike, already hit him for 2 already, 6 cards in hand, equals (3 +(6))*2=18! Turn 4 win. His wall of omens didn't know what was coming.
FINALS: I wasn't exactly sure what this guys deck did. It didn't seem all that great, but i went along with it.
Game 1: All he had was tons of mana ramp and large green creatures. The turn 2 stoneforge was too much for him with the feast/famine.
Game 2: I took out my body/mind for another feast/famine. Won on t7. This time with mirran crusader. Even after naturalizing my swords, the crusader was too much for him (GO pro-green)
FINAL RESULTS: 1ST PLACE 1-2, 2-0, 2-0, 2-1: FINALS: 2-0, 2-0 3-1; or (9-3)
Round 1: 2-0 vs Precursor Golem/PyroAscension Round 2: 2-0 vs R/B Persecutor Round 3: 2-0 vs U/B Control Round 4: 0-2 vs. BUG Shaman Round 5: 0-2 vs G/W Tokens
Won first place. Went 3-0-1.
Match 1: vs. UB Infect. 2-0. This deck was just the premade infect deck.
Match 2: vs. UW Control. 1-1. Won the first game simply by winning the removal race. Lost the next game when he stuck a Venser and a Gideon. Gideon allowed his Venser to live long enough to ultimate, which sealed my fate. Third game was definitely going his way, and he ultimated Venser. But time was called, and he couldn't get the firepower in to bring me down to 0 in time.
Match 3: vs. Red Deck Wins. 2-1. Red can be a hard matchup if they get a ton of damage in too quickly, but if I can stick a Lich or keep them off for a few turns, then it's very winnable. Lost game 1 when he bolted me in the face 3 times. Wont the next two games off of Liches and 5/5 Tezz creations.
Match 4: vs. Monoblack. 2-0. This was a pretty even matchup, but he got very unlucky. Game 1 he mulled to 5 and could never really recover from that or the ensuing mana-screwage. Game 2 he was mana-screwed yet again, so I had time to build up and ultimate Tezz for 10 life drain to win.
