Demonmail Hauberk Discussion

chosenone124 on More Mairsil, the Pretender questions!

1 I cast Mairsil, the Pretender exiling Demonmail Hauberk with a cage counter. It's my only creature. Can I sacrifice Mairsil to try to equip it to itself? Can I sacrifice another creature to try to equip him to himself?

Just a note: the Gatherer page seems to state that you can activate equip abilities, but Mairsil doesn't attach.

2 If Maersil exiles Figure of Destiny can it become the 8/8 Kithkin Spirit (eventually)?

3 If he exiles Kazandu Tuskcaller, can he tap to make 2 Elephants even though he has no level counters? Also, if I cast Venerated Teacher will Maersil gain level counters?

4 If he copies Mischievous Quanar can he facedown himself?

5 If Maersil exiles Myr Welder and Prototype Portal with Cage Counters. Can he use Prototype Portal to copy cards he exiled with Myr Welder's Imprint?

I just included another Sac-outlet, description above (Spawning Pit).

Bonehoard won me 3 games. Although he doesn't look like much, he is incredible to a point I'd have never imagined. This was never a dead card and can function on its own.

Homura has me on the fence - as you ut it with something else. It is possible he will go for Memnarch or something else. I don't know yet, but I'd love a good buff on a stick here that will stick.

Eternal scourge is something I want to try. Never got to play with this in, but if it doesn't work this will be easy to cut. Even as a blocker, with Mimic Vat and exiling it I can play him again and just grab the next thing in the vat that dies.

Demonmail Hauberk is way better than Grafted Wargear simply how it is worded. I can sac other things to equip the same creature (Yasova) again and again. This isn't possible with the other one since it would die. It doubles as a buff, too. And +4/+2 pushing Yasova to 8 power is very noteworthy.

Berserk will stay. I had a Blood Frenzy in before and knew I wanted a Berserk at some point. It not only works on each creature but my Yasova only dies if it attacks. So it can give +4/+0 and won't kill the creature if it doesn't attack. Also, it is destruction and not sacrifice, which can be important sometimes. Eldritch Evolution is nice, but no match for Birthing Pod here.

Last of all I'm completely with you on the fun part. This isn't meant to be competitive, but fun in multiplayer games. It heavily depends on the board state and proved to be very adaptive to problems.

Next few things most likely to change are Dack's Duplicate that will likely be replaced by Altered Ego / Aura Thief and Hero's Blade that will definately make room for another equipment in the Maybeboard. Either Fabricate or Whir of Invention will see places in the deck at some point, too. Academy Ruins will be in there, too; but there have to be more 'any color' lands to fix stuff (they will likely replace Lotus Vale).

Suggestions? =)

Bonehoard looks like the first card I would cut, as it is fairly mana intensive but you don't really seem to run cards to support that kind of game plan (namely, mill).

Homura, Human Ascendant also seems a bit heavy on CMC without providing enough benefit for this deck, because while it powers up Yasova, there are plenty of alternatives that don't require as much set up.

Eternal Scourge, which while it has a neat interaction with Food Chain, simply seems like it would be a dead draw most of the time.

Demonmail Hauberk suffers the same issues that Grafted Wargear does, as sorcery speed leaves much to be desired and requires you to always have multiple creatures out if you want to use it as a psuedo-sac outlet.

Berserk has me on the fence, because while it can help push for damage in some games, I feel that Eldritch Evolution would be an overall better one shot spell that generates value.

Keep in mind that these are only my impressions of the cards. If you find that some have proven time and again to carry the deck or are simply too fun, I'd highly recommend keeping them.

Emzed smh not sure how I made that mistake with Worldly Tutor. Definitely unlike me to mistake the rules text of a card I commonly play with, and I am very embarrassed about that. :P

I think I would not be interested in adding Natural Order. If I were interested in adding another poop card that I can't cast with teeg out, I'd be looking at Chord of Calling before Natural Order due to its ability to really just get whatever. Living Plane and Birthing Pod is already feeling clunky enough, let alone the occasional awkward Pattern of Rebirth draw here and there.

I really don't have time to be aiming for Mentor of the Meek. On turn 1, I need a dork or Sylvan Safekeeper / Mother of Runes, sometimes Land Tax. I just cast Gaddock Teeg indisputably on turn 2 to cut of Chord of Calling, Green Sun's Zenith, fast mana into a four-drop+ noncreature spell etc. To give you some idea. I once played against a Daretti, Scrap Savant deck. You're probably thinking, "Wow. He can't even cast his commander... LOL." I underestimated his hand when he went turn 1 mountain pass. I declined to throw teeg out there immediately, and I payed the price because he sandbagged the Mana Vault and slammed a turn 2 Daretti. Rip. I lost that game really hard. Anyway, from now on, I just cast teeg on turn 2 because it's necessary in my meta. On turn 3, I need to cast a hatebear. Beit Thalia, Mindcensor, or Linvala, doesn't matter. I just need to keep cutting my opponents' lines of play off as much as possible or else I can be sure that they'll squeeze their way out from under me. To toss a Mentor of the Meek out there on turn 3 is asking for trouble. If I'm not going to cast it on turn 3, then when? It's not getting any better. In the first 5 turns of the game, every single mana is precious. I'm not going to drag this out. I'm prepared to invest every last mana I have in this early-mid game on hate. I simply just can't play Mentor.

Now Earthcraft is a pretty good idea. I happen to have given one away to a good friend of mine as a birthday gift... gotta find another one. I wish Earthcraft was all fuzzy rainbows and christmas fun, but alas, I only have 12 basics and that number isn't rising. There's a solid chance, from my experience, that I play through the first few turns and not even see basic lands. That would be pretty shitty. This is one I'll have to think about for a little while.

Let's say I was using Grafted Wargear and I draw into it as well as Academy Rector. Sweet, so let's combo off. I equip it to my rector, then equip it to another creature. When it becomes unattached, I sacrifice rector and put pattern on the newly equipped creature. I transfer the wargear to another creature, and the patterned creature dies. Now the sac-fodder count = 1. I get boonweaver, which gets back the pattern. I move the wargear to him, which sacs whatever was equipped. Sac-fodder count = 2. Move the wargear off the boonweaver to another creature to sac the boonweaver. Pattern gets me a karmic guide, which gets back boonweaver. I move the wargear to boonweaver. Sac-fodder count = 3. Move the wargear to karmic guide. Pattern gets Reveillark. Move Wargear to reveillark saccing karmic guide. Move the wargear off of Reveillark to sac it. Gets back Karmic Guide and Boonweaver. Equip to boonweaver and now we're up to a sac fodder count of 4. Move the wargear to karmic guide. Pattern gets saffi. Move to saffi, hold priority on the sac trigger and sac saffi to karmic guide. Karmic GUide comes back in and reanimates Reveillark. Move to Reveillark saccing karmic guide, then move the wargear off Reveillark to a FIFTH sac fodder creature to get back karmic guide and saffi... this is getting crazy. To get to this point I need five random creatures to sacrifice. Seems not good enough. Not to mention this is all sorcery speed sacing. :/ Demonmail Hauberk isn't much better, and it's a 4-drop noncreature spell, so definitely no.

I've tried playing stoneforge mystic before. I was using jitte, sofi, soff, and skullclamp. The whole package as a whole just wasn't an effective gameplan. I found the strategy to be slow and didn't put a harness on the game-state like most other strategies did.

Oh, right, Saffi represents a problem in the chain. Then my suggestion becomes a lot worse indeed.
Concerning Grand Abolisher: It can be found by Worldly Tutor, since that isn't restricted to green creatures.
Now that Protean Hulk is legal, do you think Natural Order might be an option? It's one more nonbo with Gaddock, and you currently only have that one green fatty, but it's also a really powerful card. Getting Hulk into play on turn 3 should win the game often enough.
Two more suggestions: Mentor of the Meek seems right at home in your deck. It's also helpful if you're going off with Mirror Entity since it's a creature that can find Blasting Station. I am also a huge fan of Earthcraft: That card provides so much mana, which helps you cast your fatties or keep open mana for Heroic Intervention, Eerie Interlude, Beast Within or activations of Yisan, the Wanderer Bard or Caustic Caterpillar.
Oh and i just remembered there is another way to get a sac outlet via a creature: Stoneforge Mystic can grab Grafted Wargear or Demonmail Hauberk. That might be too clunky, but once you include Skullclamp, at least Stoneforge itself seems reasonable.

WargRave on Yasova taking over control

Just some random thoughts, sorry for the disorder. I don't really have time to organize this atm.

You're extremely light on way to interact with _non_creatures. You're gonna feel real silly as a green deck when you're facing an Asceticism and you don't have so much as a Reclamation Sage to deal with one enchantment. Consider taking out the tapping subtheme and adding Decimate, Beast Within, Hull Breach, or similar cards. Get Cyclonic Rift in there too. You need Turn to Frog much less than more noncreature interaction. Most any creature you can target, you can steal, one way or another, and the ones you can't probably aren't numerous enough to make Turn to Frog worth it.

17/39 is a lot of etb tapped lands. Try to replace some guildgates and Smoldering Crater at least, swap them for untapped dual lands, or conditionally untappeds or basics. I would guess that, while also etb tapped, the U and G vivid lands would serve better than guildgates. High Market has great utility with your gameplan. Opal Palace is possible, it helps with Yasova's power.

FYI, you can tag cards into multiple categories, so Helm of Possession, Grab the Reins, and Demonmail Hauberk can both go under Sacrificing as well. You might want even more sac outlets and fewer steal effects. Your general gives you the second but not the first, so the rest of your deck should provide more of the first and less of the second to ensure you have one of each every turn. It seems like you can do better than Barrin, Master Wizard. What about Ooze Garden? There's always the classics Fling and Birthing Pod.

You need card draw too, and a generous amount. A hand with 4 Threaten effects is a lot worse than one with 3 threaten effects and a Harmonize. At the very least, no Tibalt please. He doesn't even count as a steal effect, he's too slow for that. Shamanic Revelation, Rishkar's Expertise, and Treasure Cruise are all options. Skullclamp can turn your enemy's dorks into cards for you, or just pump up Yasova and give her death insurance. Add some more like Elvish Mystic of your own for more consistency out of the clamp. Life's Legacy and Momentous Fall do double duty. If Yasova is out, Life's Legacy is probably better than a hand of three threatens.

By the way, OG Threaten isn't good enough to make the cut, and Kari Zev's Expertise and Act of Aggression might not be enough of an improvement.

Under your ramp package, Temur Banner should be Commander's Sphere and Nissa's Pilgrimage should be Cultivate to fix your colors. You've got a pretty high curve, so adding even more ramp and bringing down the curve would help. Better to play a spell with 80% power than have a 100% power spell stuck in hand for three turns. Think about exchanging Clone Legion, Nissa's Renewal, and one of the expensive threaten effects with Rampant Growth, Farseek, and Primal Growth which gives another sac outlet. With more cheap fixing, you can run more basics, and therefor fewer etb tapped lands.

Rancor is nice for helping the general, much more efficient than Incremental Growth I think. Stormsurge Kraken seems pretty intimidating but it doesn't advance the gameplan and Yasova herself is pretty easy to remove.
