Wayne Reynolds is my favorite Magic artist so I always wanted to have a deck with one of his creatures at the helm. Originally, when I thought of this years ago, the only available and playable ones were Rafiq of the Many
and Shirei, Shizo's Caretaker. I like them, but I don't love them.
As for the others...
Tariel, Reckoner of Souls may have been all right back in 2011 but she's well past her prime.
A friend of mine wants to build Marrow-Gnawer and I'm not too Keen(ing Stone) on rat tribal anyway. He has an Ashling the Pilgrim deck to boot, so she is out too.
Feather, the Redeemed is a total badass but I already have a Boros deck (Titan's Revenge -- (Giant Tribal/Voltron)) and a combat-trick deck (Zadonkadonk -- (Budget-ish Zada Aggro)) so she's _far _ less attractive.
Bruenor Battlehammer just came out and seems fine, though inferior to all the new Boros Equipment commanders that have come out recently. I love Salvatore's books, but it's Boros equipment and I already kind of have that deck as well as a Mardu equipment deck (Khanate of the Golden Headbutt (Artifact Voltron)).
The rest of Wayne Reynolds' potential commanders are, uh, not so desirable;
Ink-Eyes, Servant of Oni (almost good!), Ashling, the Extinguisher, Ib Halfheart, Goblin Tactician, Zo-Zu the Punisher

After watching a podcast about underappreciated commanders Linvala, Shield of Sea Gate got on my radar. I had enough of a collection that I could throw together a decent Azorious goodstuff or flyers deck nearly for free and use Linvala as a repeatable Selfless Spirit and ignore the Party mechanic. Seems cool to me!
I've decided to go for the classic Azorius Fliers archetype. Originally I was going for just goodstuff that I had on-hand but all the flying-tribal cards are cheap. As I was trying to fill my lower creature curve I noticed a lot of the good flying stuff was 2-3 CMC.
Some other builders recommend backups for Linvala but I have no idea where they're finding the deck space for it all.
This deck isn't budget per se, but all the decent cards I already had on-hand and all the flying-tribal cards I bought were way cheap. Not looking to spend a lot on this deck for a while.

Two years and two months later... time for a shake-up!
Going a bit less all-in on Gift of Immortality. I've had my fun. I wanted a few more beefy flyers and even more draw. Removed the mana rocks and replaced them with lands and cheap draw.
