Winged Words Discussion

I suggest following the "Draw Two" mechanic introduced in Throne of Eldraine. There are several cards that synergies well with cards the Arcane Tempo challenger deck. To boot, the cards aren't expensive and budget friendly.

Cards to consider: 2-4 Hypnotic Sprite , 2 Brazen Borrower , 1-4 Irencrag Pyromancer , 3 Bonecrusher Giant , 2-3 Improbable Alliance , 4 Thrill of Possibility , 2 Chemister's Insight or Winged Words , 2-4 Skewer the Critics , 2 Heartfire , 2-3 The Royal Scions , 1 Chandra, Awakened Inferno , 1-2 Castle Vantress , 1 Mystic Sanctuary , 2-4 Temple of Epiphany

I think I've got to a point where I'm satisfied with how the deck plays. Warrant / Warden is a very good tempo spell, and it definitely works well. Also, I've completely removed both Faerie Vandal and Pteramander from the deck. While playtesting, I felt like I was holding Winged Words in my hand without really wanting to cast it unless my opponent managed to stall me and force the long game, at the point that I would be able to cast a sorcery without worrying about leaving Mana open to work on their turn.

But probably the best addition I've made was Hallowed Fountain as having just 2 of them is enough for me to be able to use the other side of the split cards, giving me more versatility if the game drags on.

Love the deck tech and this is an archetype I have thought often of, though trying to do both artifacts and enchantments in a three-color format and not restrict your synergies can be tough. You're better off either going full enchantment or full artifact and then you'll be running a more streamlined, combotastic deck by doing so. I think you've gone heavier on the artifact side, or we'd be seeing more enchantment creatures from Theros and the Commander enchantment-creature precon and enchantment removal spells that combo with things like Blightcaster and Grim Guardian (which all combo with enchanting removal like Pacifism and Prison Realm and Dead Weight , etc.). To this artifact-heavy focus, I think Myr Retriever and Workshop Assistant are too redundant and provide only small bodies on the field when there are so many other cards that have this same effect already in the deck here ( Sharuum the Hegemon , Buried Ruin , etc.). Plus, without a sacrifice outlet, Workshop Assistant is definitely not the kind of card you want to be top-decking in situations where you've run out of steam. On the other hand, you may need more card draw rather than grave draw, since you don't self-mill, (especially if you're in a situation where Distant Melody is dead in your hand) and I think Mask of Riddles is an ideal sideboard/budget alternate for this deck. And is Ever-Watching Threshold in the pre-con? It should be. Faerie Mechanist comes to me as a distant budget option (because it only looks at the top 3 cards of your library, it's too limited to be truly useful since this deck also runs so many enchantments and creatures, but it's got tribal, flying, and it is an artifact as such is worth a mention). Finally, if you can make double-black mana work in your casting, Underworld Connections is card advantage that seems to be a staple of commander that also happens to trigger your commander. Sludge Strider can get you that life back on occasions where you have extra mana and are losing artifact creatures or sacrificing artifacts to effects (heck, even Dimir Locket and Orzhov Locket couldn't go wrong as cheap ramp that gets you card draw in the late game and triggers other effects). And take out the Winged Words from the 60-card precon, which gets you nowhere in a 100-card format, and put in at least a Terramorphic Expanse if you don't have access to better quality dual-lands. Campaign of Vengeance and Ethereal Absolution if you're really committed to going wide with your commander (I mean, with Etchings and Ethereal and your commander, you could have at least five or six 4/3 flying faeries threatening to go wider and wider). They could be protected from board wipes by an additional counterspell, like Stoic Rebuttal . I could go on and on, but definitely replace a few of the things in the precon with at least a few of these.

Changed it a bit, but after some thinking, I decided to add 2x Pteramander instead of another Faerie Duelist and another Brazen Borrower . The reason is that I'll be playing lots of cheap spells all the time, so I'll be able to adapt the Pteramander for cheap easily, which gives me another hard-hitting threat on the board. Paired with a pumped Brineborn Cutthroat , these may be tough to handle, especially as Brineborn Cutthroat will get even bigger as I protect it (or other creature) by casting counters and bounces.

I love Winged Words , as it's a very cost-effective card (at least in a deck full of flyers), but I would be willing to swap it with another "draw 2 cards" spell with instant speed it one becomes available. I even thought about swapping it with Anticipate , as it offer good card selection at instant speed for the same 2 mana o would be casting Winged Words , and I'll test it later to see which one works best.

Hello Sir!

I take it you started with the Mu Yanling, Celestial Wind planeswalker deck.

Two main suggestions in general:

I would suggest to keep the deck to mono-blue if you can, as this will allow you to not get color screwed (getting too many lands of one color, but not enough of another). If you insist on going White-blue, you need to run some dual color lands (maybe a set of Glacial Fortress ).

I would also suggest you get rid of your non-flying things and stay away from 1x counts. By having more one-ofs, you are thinning the probability to get the best cards.

If you dont mind cards rotating out of standard in october, the most obvious addition to this is Favorable Winds . A mono blue version of this would make the also soon rotating Tempest Djinn really good.

Having said this, let me give you a break down on how I would upgrade your deck in its colors:

-2x Air Elemental +2x Sphinx of New Prahv Sure, the Sphinx has 1 less toughness, but it also costs 1 mana less and is harder to deal with because of its special ability.

-1x Callous Dismissal -1x Bond of Discipline +2 Winged Words Since all of your creatures are flyers, you really want to be able to draw 2 cards for only 2 mana. This is also your only draw spell and Amass doesn't really make sense here.

-2x Spectral Sailor -2x Concordia Pegasus +4x Healer's Hawk Spectral Sailor and Concordia Pegasus can be easily replaced by the hawk, which will gain you life (and time) for you to get your finisher cards

-1x Saheeli's Silverwing +1 Warden of Evos Isle Get a fourth warden. Saheeli is slower than Warden, and the Warden will speed the rest of your deck. No brainer.

-3x Island -3x Plains +4x Glacial Fortress +2 Azorius Guildgate More reliable lands!

-2x Celestial Messenger + 2x Empyrean Eagle Eagle doesn't depend on having the planeswalker for not sucking.

-2x Show of Valor -1x Glaring Aegis +3 Aerial Assault Aerial Assault has better synergy with your deck, also, trying to have as many 4x as possible.

-2x Take Vengeance +2x Dovin, Grand Arbiter You already have 6x removal in the form of Aerial Assault and Pacifism

-1x Disdainful Stroke -1x Disenchant -1x Negate -1x Quench +4 Depose / Deploy Removing many one-ofs in favor of a flexible spell.

-1x Tale's End -1x Unsummon +2 Azorius Charm More flexible, in your colors, more consistency.

Hi, nice list ! Good point for the Creeping Trailblazer . Now I think the next step (as the others here and on reddit said) would be multiple shocklands (don't buy the checklands they rotate "soon". AND changing the weakest elementals for straight up good cards like

Scorch Spitter for Cavalier of Flame Fire Elemental for Beast Whisperer Tectonic Rift for Lightning Strike

Also Winged Words seems like a weak card with only two flyers in the deck. Chemister's Insight is good or Sinister Sabotage .

Have fun :p
