DemonDragonJ on List of Commanders by Home …

Now that WotC's Commander products are an annual product (I still refer to the format itself as Elder Dragon Highlander/EDH, because I was introduced to it by that name), I wish to make a list of all the legendary creatures, or commanders, who have appeared in those sets, by plane of origin.

I shall be including both new legendary creatures introduced in those sets, as well as previous cards that were reprinted in those sets (which includes Commander's Arsenal), but I will not include legendary creatures that have not been printed in a Commander set, even if other creatures from their plane have been in those sets. I shall first list the planes known to be home to at least one commander, alphabetically by name, and then list each commander from that plane, alphabetically by name. If a commander is from a specific region or belongs to a specific faction on that plane, I shall list that region or faction in parenthesis after their name.

What does everyone else think of this list? It took a great amount of time to write this list, so I hope that you appreciate it. I would not at all be surprised to learn that I mistakenly listed a commander's home plane as unknown, when it is actually known, so please let me know if I made any mistakes, and I also shall add new legendary creatures to this list whenever WotC releases a new Commander set.

Neotrup on Can a flipped creature attack?

Neither flipping a creature (like Nighteyes the Desecrator) nor transforming a creature (like Awoken Horror  Flip) count as them entering the battlefield, so as long as the original form has been on the battlefield since the start of your turn you can attack with the new version.

Actually there is one that might work but I'm not sure if the rules allow for it. Nighteyes the Desecrator would also work as a commander but im not sure if I can use him since its a kamigawa flip where the first side isn't legendary

@Jstraub

Keep in mind, these are just recommendations from my point of view on what a mono-black Relentless Rats 1v1 deck should look like. So feel free to tell me off if I insult you in anyway.

Recommendations:

General:

-1 Sidisi, Undead Vizier // He/she (it?) has a good effect, allowing you to tutor for a small price, but if you are running a rat deck, this isn't exactly what you want to be at the helm.

+1 Marrow-Gnawer // You've got him in the 99, but this is who you really want to be commanding the army! That fear on your rats is ridiculous. Plus he spawns rats himself, is the same CMC, and has practically the same small price that Sidisi has for his activated ability.

Lands:

-1 Petrified Field // The only lands you need in the deck are basic Swamps. Every other land is pure luxurious utility. If your opponent is focusing on destroying your non-basics, they're doing it wrong, because you win via overrunning them, not with special lands and combos.

-1 Cavern of Souls // You have multiple copies of your best creature in the deck (Relentless Rats), so who cares if a few get countered? Your opponent is just wasting their answers, leaving them wide open for a game winning Death Cloud, or some other bomb. Every other creature in the deck is pure support for your rats.

-1 Ghost Quarter // You won't need land destruction in a rat deck. You will out tempo 75% of opponents.

-1 Tectonic Edge // "".

+7 Swamp // This will put your land count at a solid 36 with a spell count of 63. This split provides a terrific land:spell ratio that is very consistent (This is purely from personal experience. I have never seen a deck with less than 36 lands recover from a total board wipe faster than one with).

Instants:

-1 Malicious Affliction // This just isn't thaaat great of a kill card. You'll see why in some later suggestions.

+1 Sudden Spoiling // Amazing card. Makes Emrakul, the Aeons Torn a little bitch. This has a very nice and effective boardwipe combo below in the Sorceries section.

Planeswalkers:

-1 Liliana Vess

-1 Liliana of the Dark Realms

-1 Sorin Markov

// It would be best to ultimately pick one of these guys (two if you are starving for one of the abilities they offer). You do have the creature base to protect Planeswalkers more than good enough. I just personally have found that Planeswalkers tend to be dead cards in hand, or a meat shield that doesn't even get to be used for it's intended purpose more than not. But like I said, they fit... I just recommend other spells that can for sure be used.

Creatures:

-1 Mogis's Marauder // He just isn't that great. You're better off replacing him with another rat or another utility creature. I will list some options that I find would be suitable replacements.

+1 Swarm of Rats // Big beater

+1 Throat Slitter // Great removal with fear.

+1 Locust Miser // Hilarious against people who rely solely on card advantage in the hand (looking at you blue players >_>).

+1 Gnat Miser // Lesser version of Locust Miser if you aren't keen on his CMC. 1 card disadvantage isn't as good as 2, but it's still 1 less action/answer your opponent has available to them.

+1 Diseased Vermin // Just hilarious in a 1v1 setting, especially with fear!

+1 Crypt Ghast // If you're set on having extra mana production.

+1 Magus of the Coffers // Cabal Coffers on a stick. Again, if you are set on extra mana production.

+1 Nezumi Graverobber|Nighteyes the Desecrator // This guy is awesome graveyard hate. His flip doubles as good redundancy for Ink-Eyes as well.

Sorceries:

-1 Curse of the Cabal // While you have the ability to bring your creatures back en mass via Patriarch's Bidding and Twilight's Call, I am not so sure this is that effective in this deck.

-1 Toxic Deluge // I understand this gets rid of indestructible creatures, but you don't need this and Mutilate in the deck. Pick one or the other, or replace them both all together.

-1 Mutilate // See above.

-1 Damnable Pact // If this were instant speed, holy shit it would be so worth the mana investment. See below for what I recommend to replace it.

+1 In Garruk's Wake // Fucking awesome one-sided board wipe. Hilarious to see the faces of super-friend players.

+1 Plague Wind // Same as above, except has a regeneration prevention clause instead of Plansewalker removal.

+1 Decree of Pain // Freaking awesome board wipe. This could replace your Damnable Pact. It's mana cost isn't something to be concerned about if you're willing to use Damnable Pact as a mana sink in the first place. It can be cycled for less and it still be a board wipe when you play Sudden Spoiling, then cycle this. You've effectively just got rid of any threat that Emrakul, the Aeons Torn, Avacyn, Angel of Hope, Wurmcoil Engine, Blightsteel Colossus, Platinum Angel, Platinum Emperion, you name it.. may pose if not removed properly.

+1 Ruinous Path // Yes it's sorcery speed, but you can kill a Planeswalker with it, and it has awaken 4 if you don't need it's main effect. Or a board wipe just happened and you draw this instead of a creature (I've saved myself from losing the game after board wipes with awaken X several times. It's amazing when it pulls through).

Artifacts:

-1 Ashnod's Altar // You don't seem to need the sac outlet or the costly mana boost.

-1 Charcoal Diamond // You don't need the 1 mana this offers you.

-1 Thornbite Staff // If you're not running Sidisi, this is unnecessary.

-1 Urza's Incubator // Don't need this at all.

Fill all empty slots with anything else you want. :)

Pheardemons on Rat Cemetery (Rat Tribal)

I would suggest putting the Swarmyard to 4 and adding in Urborg, Tomb of Yawgmoth to make them swamps so everything in your deck still works properly. Unless you don't have enough rats on the board most of the time for them to matter. Also have you considered Swarm of Rats, Nezumi Shortfang, Nighteyes the Desecrator, or Sewer Rats? Nezumi Shortfang seems to be a better fit than Rotting Rats (don't know much about tribal rats but it seems to have a better end game). Also have you considered Ogre Slumlord? I know it's not a rat but it seem to definitely enhance the rats themselves. Also in legacy you have Dark Ritual to speed up the deck. For Draw power have you thought about Dark Confidant? The highest CMC in your deck is 5 which is only one card and the rest is 3 or less. You wouldn't be losing nearly as much life that wouldn't make up for the card draw.
