Greven, Predator Captain Discussion

Aphoticate on Chaotic Echo

This is FearDReaper from MTG Salvation. You asked me for my thoughts:

Dack's Duplicate never really preformed all that well for me. Imo clone effects are overrated. Phantasmal Image and Phyrexian Metamorph are also kinda meh in my experience. These guys were so much better before they changed the legend rule.

I haven't played my list in a while but if I reforged it I would definitely be trying Greven, Predator Captain. He seems to fit the deck like a glove and brings some phenominal card draw to the table.

Are you comboing with Murderous Redcap? If not I don't think he's a great include. In its place I would run Ravenous Chupacabra. If you are comboing with redcap, id still try to find a place for Chuppy. He's just sooo good

A few more cards I would add are: Herald of Secret Streams, Captivating Crew, Syr Konrad, the Grim, and Olivia, Mobilized for War (I see you have her in your maybe board but in my experience she is really good)

Lastly, idk how casual/competitive your playgroup is but if you wanna be really mean you can play Jokulhaups. I wouldn't recommend it if your group is more casual though as they will absolutely hate you lol.

Feel free to pick my brain more. Preferably on this site

Rat Colony would be fun with Greven, Predator Captain. Sac a 5/1, draw 5 cards and lose a life.

Mj3913: Thanks for mentioning me!

Now for some decks, I have the $10 Deck above and a new one below, all the cards in it are $0.25 on card Kingdom, it's about $18 Near mint

I'm Just a Poor Boy, I Need No Legendary | Budget

Commander / EDH Deadpoo111

Also, go check out SynergyBuild, he has an entire folder of Budget commander decks! they're pretty great.

If you're looking fopr something to brew on your own, I've found Mowu, Loyal Companion to be incredibly powerful and also super budget friendly. Also worth noting is Greven, Predator Captain who is ridiculously overpowered and I built for cards under a dollar with a theft theme (it still kills people on turn three) if you want the link to the deck, here it is though it has been severely upgraded in the mana base.

Welcome Aboard | Greven's Theft and Suicide

Commander / EDH Deadpoo111

Also, there's a whole ultra budget brew article series on EDHREC that uses cards only under a dollar, though admittedly, over time, some of the older articles have increased in price.

Finally, there's a series of articles by Tomer Abramovici for Budget Commander on and his newer decks are in the $25 price range with clear upgrades over time, I would especially suggest his 6 CMC tribal brew (it's incredibly fun).

I hope you have great luck in building your commander deck, I know budget brewing is a challenge but it is well worth the reward at the end.

xaarvaxus thanks for the feedback! I really like a lot of the ideas you gave especially the ability to recur creatures a bit more easily. I playtested it a little and realized that if Greven, Predator Captain gets removed that I can fall short of what I wanted to do.

Hello all! Here's our update for C19.

Anje Falkenrath

Anje is a value-generating commander that is an outlet for Worldgorger Dragon. She stands as a sidegrade to Xantcha, Sleeper Agent.

Atla Palani, Nest Tender

Atla has some decent potential to cheat in creatures, some interesting Mirror Entity combos, and built in boardwipe protection in colors that need it. She's limited by her color identity, but is powerful enough to compel competitive exploration and play.

Elsha of the Infinite

A strong value engine and a third of the Elsha/Helm/Top style combo.

K'rrik, Son of Yawgmoth

A very powerful cost reducer, albeit in colors that struggle for interaction. Tentatively placing him in Competitive.

Chainer, Nightmare Adept

His "reanimation" ability is a little too fairly costed between the discard and having to cast the creature. Rakdos limits interactivity and reanimator bombs. No obvious combos discovered yet.

Greven, Predator Captain

A relatively powerful draw engine could fuel some hybrid fair/unfair strategies.

Grismold, the Dread Sower

Fairly substantial token producer at a cheap cost.

Slimefoot, the Stowaway

In similarity to Grismold, we've re-evaluated Slimefoot as High Power.

Volrath, the Shapestealer

No obvious combos, but is in a powerful color combination and lends to a lot of synergies.

Kadena, Slinking Sorcerer

Very narrow ability on top of a small pool of morphs.

Gerrard, Weatherlight Hero

Difficult to abuse ability, an unfortunate 'dies' trigger, and in lackluster colors.

Ghired, Conclave Exile

Reasonably strong combat threat with Populate shenanigans, but solidly fair and slow to build up.

Marisi, Breaker of the Coil

Combat slience is hard to abuse in these colors. Goading creatures can be quite disruptive.

Pramikon, Sky Rampart

Can support turtling strategies in combat-oriented metas.

Rayami, First of the Fallen

Very specific hate and a difficult to amass set of keywords.

Sevinne, the Chronoclasm

One copy per turn on a narrow flashback interaction is difficult to abuse effectively.

Me and my friend were playing a game and I had Greven, Predator Captain on my side of the field, I gave it double strike with Berserkers onslaught and attacked. My friend blocked with two creatures, one of which died during the Firststrike combat step. Since Menace requires two creatures to be blocking would the second attack go through now that one of the creatures is dead, or would that creature still be considered a blocker for the second attack?

Firestorm258 Think of it this way You have Curse of Fool's Wisdom on yourself and you have Alhammarret's Archive

Greven, Predator Captain only cares about how much life you lost that turn

Curse of Fool's Wisdom will Still count as life loss and life gained

Alhammarret's Archive Will double the card draw from Greven's attack trigger and double the life gain from Fool's wisdom effect

So sac a 4/4 to Greven, and you get the following

Draw 8, lose 12 life, gain 32 life, Greven is now a 17/5 with Menace

The new Greven, Predator Captain seems like a potential excellent inclusion to this deck (or even as the commander of this deck, though you lose green).
