Kosei, Penitent Warlord

Legendary Creature — Ogre Samurai

As long as this has a counter, is equipped and enchanted, this creature has "Whenever this deals combat damage to an opponent, you draw that many cards and this deals that much damage to each other opponent."

Tarzunga Your deck is sick. I ordered mine today and may take some inspiration from yours depending on how my first few games go. Kosei, Penitent Warlord has done a lot of work in the Chishiro, the Shattered Blade pre-con that I have, so you're right that he could be a better fit but the artwork is just too cool on Isao, Enlightened Bushi to not have him as the commander.

Ok, a little bit of context: My job is basically a social worker in a youth project. There happen(ed) to be working other MtG-people besides me, and many of our youths/young adults are pretty nerdy, although they mostly play other TCGs. We still established some collections for various TCGs, among others obviously an MtG-one. From that pile of cards I build some janky commander decks, and some of them simply function hilariously at that level, and from playing them few times, the ones I like best:

Arni Brokenbrow:

Theme: "Stronger than you"

The deck basically has lots of pump spells, auras and equipment andput those on...no, not Arni himself, but another creature. This way, Arni's boast makes you benefit from the power-boost twice, once for himsrlf and once for his buddy he wants to be stronger then. The most important keyword for the deck to have is first strike to prevent Arni from dying. It is a really weird to play voltron with unusual, but really fun lines of play.

Eutropia the Twice-Favored:

Theme: "Float like a butterfly, hit like a truck"

Little creatures with value abilities, +1/+1 counter synergy, and enchantress effects to hit hard, fast and evasive. The deck has clear voltron qualities, and Eutropia is a lot more dangerous than she looks. The best wincon for the deck isn't included in that version, but if I wereto build her myself, I'd include Arcanum Wings, Colossification and Eldrazi Conscription. In our games there, this deck becomes archenemy in no time, and as it ramps like hell, re-casting Eutropia five or even sic times is usually not that big of a deal.

I also built Najal, the Storm Runner, but haven't had a chance to see him in action, yet. The deck looks super-fun, though, and as sorceries tend to be pretty bad in most games, you automatically get to play cheap cards and make them more powerful.

My latest deck I built at home a little powered down was Kosei, Penitent Warlord. It has a table-kill potential similar to Heartless Hidetsugu, but looks a lot less frightening.

What do say?

I've never seen Vengeful Dreams before. I'll have to keep an eye on that one for future decks.

Kosei, Penitent Warlord is such a cool card. Kind of "bad", yes, but still sooooo cool. Been debating building around him since NEO release.

I think I'm going to keep play-testing a blink-focused Preston, but Vengeful Dreams seems like really cool tech. If I ever revive my Alesha, Who Smiles at Death deck, or play some other white-adjacent graveyard deck, I think that could be great tech.

Solitude is solid. I don't currently own a copy at the moment.

Preston is currently just a theoretical brew for me. I've had a desire to build another mono-color deck. I've also recently revisited and updated a Valduk, Keeper of the Flame deck I brewed earlier this year as a potential candidate. In a similar vein, I've considered converting my Saryth, the Viper's Fang deck into Kosei, Penitent Warlord.

Kediss, Emberclaw Familiar can turn any commander into hitting everyone, especially if you run him as a partner. Also, Kosei, Penitent Warlord can hit everyone, and has a fun minigame with a big reward.

TypicalTimmy has gotten or granted vigilance as far back as 1994 and 1999, with Rabid Wombat and Stamina. It's been getting vigilance regularly since about 2015. haste is a little less common, but still visible also since 2015. Both those abilities are secondary in green, so they'll show up once in a while.

"Extended damage" (not sure what else to call it) has a tiny little precedent in Greatbow Doyen, and Kosei, Penitent Warlord and Hydra Omnivore also exist now, so this might be tertiary in in the future.

Of course, Questing Beast is still a mess, and the "can't be prevented" clause is still out of nowhere. It absolutely would have been fairer and more sensical as Naya or Gruul.

My best guess is that Throne of Eldraine wanted to be a mono-color set, with abilities like Adamant, and like you said, they needed a mythic slot filler.

As a backup Voltron target in the 99, have you thought about Kosei, Penitent Warlord? It's a lot of hassles, but many Green Voltron decks already have all 3 parts in it. Not sure if you find you need a backup though!

Any reason you don't use Colossification in here? It's a ton of mana, but if you've already got Hexproof, you play it and next turn you swing with an unblockable 24 power Commander, which sounds pretty good. It's pretty pricey, but Blade of Selves is pretty cool with Unblockable. You don't need very much ramp in your deck I suppose, but Mark of Sakiko exists, as does One with Nature.

Is your Commander high enough power usually to justify a Return of the Wildspeaker or Rishkar's Expertise type effect? 4 power is a bit low, but if you consistently have 6-8 power, they are probably worth a look. I also like War Room and Bonders' Enclave as ways to draw more cards at relatively low deck building cost.

Just had a laugh, was going to say 'Take out Harmonize!', then I saw which art it was and I actually like that art a lot, so kudos! Great work here, the spellslinger emphasis is interesting/refreshing.
