Anhelo, the Painter

Legendary Creature — Vampire Assassin

Deathtouch

The first instant or sorcery spell you cast each turn has casualty 2. (As you cast that spell, you may sacrifice a creature with power 2 or greater. When you do, copy the spell and you may choose new targets for the copy.)

BrickMaster28 on Strive Mechanic

In my deck I am running Harness by Force and Anhelo, the Painter. If I cast Harness by Force as the first sorcery of my turn and I pay the strive cost ({2}{R} + {1}{R}{R}) to target a second creature, then sacrifice an appropriate creature to copy it (since Anhelo gives it Casualty 2) - what spell would get copied?

Would the copy be with the strive cost (to target two creatures) or without the strive cost (to target one creature)?

Thank you in advance for your help!

No prob Profet93! I've used Seize the Spotlight before in my Anhelo, the Painter deck that eventually got recycled into this one. Seize the Spotlight definitely has that additional bit of upside, since my meta tends to skew a bit more aggro/go wide. I've used Lazotep Plating in another older deck, and liked the corner case protection of giving myself Hexproof on some occasions.

I'm waiting for the most recent Ixalan cards to hit the site, but a change that I am making to the deck is replacing Genasi Enforcers with Saheeli, the Sun's Brilliance. I've liked making token copies with her ability when I've play-tested so far.

I would like to point out Rootha, Mercurial Artist as yet another way to copy your spells. I use her next to Anhelo, the Painter and she ends up being a juge power house for me.

UltimateRoxas40, an alternative to Bitterblossom that I've been considering is Black Market Connections. I do have a copy available since I recently took apart my Anhelo, the Painter deck to free up its pieces to build this deck.

Cerebral Vortex could be kinda silly here, especially when used in conjuction with other effects that force your opponents to draw.

Ironically enough, I wanted to use Cerebral Vortex in my Anhelo, the Painter deck as tech against the Xyris deck in our meta.

Thank you for the suggestion Barbarian_Sun_Pope! I've been updating the deck a lot over the weekend, and trying to make the combo list as up to date as possible to reflect those changes. I definitely want another lower to the ground token producer. I'm also considering Jadar, Ghoulcaller of Nephalia, per RangerOfPower's recommendation, and also Black Market Connections. Bitterblossom would definitely fit right in.

I currently have a copy of Jadar and Black Market Connections available, since I recently decommissioned my Anhelo, the Painter deck to free up its pieces for Zimone and Dina.

Thank you for the suggestion RangerOfPower! I do like Jadar, I currently use him as a token producer in my Anhelo, the Painter deck. I'll keep him on my Maybeboard for now as I continue to make adjustments from play-testing.

I'm kinda considering cutting Presence of Gond, since I have a few different combo options as-is. I'm thinking of adding another 2 cmc ramp piece, or something like a Night's Whisper or Gruesome Realization.

There's someone that I mutually follow on Moxfield that built a deck with Ria Ivor in the command zone. They shared with me that the deck felt very slow and clunky, even with consistent access to her. Basically felt like a lot of set-up for creating enough Mite tokens to likely paint a target on your back.

I've liked Gruesome Realization in some of my recent games with it. Most of the time I've used the Draw 2 mode, but I had a game a couple of weeks ago where I used the -1/-1 mode to kill off a Krenko, Mob Boss's growing board of Goblins. Thankfully most of them were small enough to take the hit. I like the flexibility to draw or have some anti-token tech.

I've also recently started trying out Braids, Arisen Nightmare and Seize the Spotlight. I run Seize the Spotlight in my Anhelo, the Painter deck for the copy potential, but figured it could have a spot here as a first main phase play, especially if I have group drain effects on board. Giving an opponents a choice can certainly be a double-edged sword, but I think it can make games fun for the communicative aspect, and players are essentially damned by their own choices.
