Mass 2021-Kaldheim Update

Citridon, 4 years ago

-1 Marchesa, the Black Rose, +1 Immersturm Predator

-1 Bloodcrazed Paladin, +1 Nullpriest of Oblivion - Both are cheap bodies intended to come down after removal to rebuild. Paladin requires you to leave mana up however, and is just a big dummy. Nullpriest can come down next turn after untap and is also a decent body on turn 2, if a hand wants to get aggressive.

-1 Dismal Backwater, +1 Creeping Tar Pit - Came across and extra one cracking Zendikar 3 boxes, and it's much better than dismal backwater

-1 Bloodline Necromancer, +1 Drana, the Last Bloodchief - I have necromancer elsewhere, and while it's definitley good, Drana is more powerful, if tad more risky. (And necromancer is MUCH more powerful in Inalla)

-1 Olivia, Mobilized for War, +1 Zagras, Thief of Heartbeats - This deck is just not built to use Olivia well and Zagras should allow for some interesting attack options

-1 Stoneforge Masterwork, +1 Glasspool Mimic  Flip - Getting an extra land in here, since the deck's curve has stretched but I still want to keep the mana somewhat lean

-1 Evolving Wilds, +1 Hengegate Pathway  Flip

-1 Island, +1 Riverglide Pathway  Flip

-1 Swamp, +1 Blightstep Pathway  Flip

-1 Dragon Roost, +1 Waking the Trolls - Since I built the deck, I've never tutored for Dragon Roost and I haven't cast it the times I've drawn it. It just ended up not really being a fit. Instead, Waking the Trolls is a bit of interactin that only needs one upfront casting and should be easy enough to get out.

-1 Mountain, +1 Valakut Awakening  Flip - A POWERFUL filtering effect, especially if I've reached no max hand size, and it's going to cost "one of my lands is a tap land" to add it to the late game

-1 Island, +1 Sea Gate Restoration  Flip - Just adding the ability for another land to make me have to maximum hand size

-1 Outpost Siege, +1 In Search of Greatness - This removes the risk of exiling one of the epic spells before I'm ready to go off, but still does a bit of digging on my upkeep. It may not put a ton of permanents into play, but with value in scrying towards this deck's endgame, it really only needs to happen once or twice to be quite the boon.

-1 Forgeborn Oreads, +1 Leyline Tyrant - One enchantress trigger lost, but it's a weak one and Lyeline Tyrant works towards providing enough mana for the various late-game shenanigans, as well as giving the ability to just KILL A PLAYER if he sticks around and I get access to mana

-1 Future Sight, +1 Niko Aris - Future sight is one of the most expensive card advantage pieces in the deck, so it seems fititng to swap for a planeswalker who becomes a lil sphinx's rev when I have any enchantresses in play

Lithoform Engine

AjMcGamer, 4 years ago

Just a very quick update to let all the shrine players out there know that Lithoform Engine is, as expected, an amazing fit with shrines.

Mass 2021-Kaldheim Update

Citridon, 4 years ago

-1 Sin Collector, +1 Orah, Skyclave Hierophant

-1 Tariel, Reckoner of Souls, +1 Rakshasa Debaser - Debaser does similar work while being a demon, and I finally have a deck where Tariel fits (I kinda shoehorned her in because I like her and it was my only Mardu deck)

-1 Lyzolda, the Blood Witch, +1 Taborax, Hope's Demise

-1 Radiant Destiny, +1 Relic Vial - Not strictly an anthem, but the drain trigger will do close to +1 power, and it can provide velocity against apostle flood

-1 Mardu Ascendancy, +1 Basri Ket - Basri's -2 can do the same thing as mardu ascendancy, but his +1 has more usage early game, and I'm more than happy to throw apostles in the way to push for his emblem if the board is right.

-1 Whisper, Blood Liturgist, +1 Pontiff of Blight - I was kinda borderline on Whisper, and then I ended up cutting Pontiff from another deck. This deck is full of low cost cards to extort and creatures to build up extort triggers.

-1 Goldnight Commander, +1 Draugr Necromancer

-1 Stoneforge Masterwork, +1 Sword of War and Peace - Without big token produciton like soldiers or a similar tribe, the masterwork tends to ceiling around +4-+5. War and Peace can do half that, add protection and evasion, and also gains a little life (and it just left another deck)

-1 Crackling Doom, +1 Blood on the Snow - As long as we're getting snow lands in here, may as well get a neat payoff

-1 Mountain, +1 Needleverge Pathway  Flip

-1 Plains, +1 Brightclimb Pathway  Flip

-1 Unknown Shores, +1 Sulfurous Mine

-1 Temple of Silence, +1 Snowfield Sinkhole

-1 Evolving Wilds, +1 Path of Ancestry - Lotta humans in here, so this should be a lot of scries (I missed this before)

All my other basics are becoming snow basics, for Draugr

v2

mrpatch, 4 years ago

Added 1 Selfless Savior and removed 1 Hushbringer. Hushbringer is good but multiples give no additional benefit.
STD 5 / 2
Reidane, God of the Worthy feature for HATEBIRDS

Mass 2021-Kaldheim Update

Citridon, 4 years ago

-1 Dearly Departed, +1 Glorious Protector - Decent body with flash that can be held up to flip a bunch of werewolves and protect them from removal!

-1 Opal Palace, +1 Needleverge Pathway  Flip

-1 Blossoming Sands, +1 Branchloft Pathway  Flip

-1 Kher Keep, +1 Cragcrown Pathway  Flip

-1 Eidolon of Rhetoric, +1 Realmwalker - There's only so much room for non-flash utility creatures. Eidolon also largely functions by adding power via preventing transformation, but realmwalker can add power via playing more creatures. Eidolon also fades with a field wipe, where Realmwalker lets me build more hand to rebuild after one takes it out.

-1 Ghired, Conclave Exilefoil, +1 Battle Mammoth - Ghired was mostly "really good top end aggressive creature" since he was a lot of power. Mammoth is also pretty good power, and can help negate targeted removal. The fortell mechanic may also give opportunities to not cast a spell for a turn while combining with activated abilities to utilize mana well (like transforming my general)

Mass 2021-Kaldheim Update

Citridon, 4 years ago

-1 Centaur Vinecrasher, +1 Radha, Heart of Keld

-1 Jiang Yanggufoil, +1 Demonic Embrace - While the cieling on JIang is higher than +3/+1, the trample and flying are comparable, and the discard to recast should end up even or a bonus given our commander and the "play lands in graveyard" cards.

-1 Thantis, the Warweaverfoil, +1 Phylath, World Sculptor - Thantis is neat, but just in hear from the precon, and Phylath is a (lesser) 2nd Avenger of Zendikar, one of hte most powerful and on-theme cards in the deck.

-1 Whiptongue Hydra, +1 Moraug, Fury of Akoum - Gaze of Granite and Blasphemous Act still give us 2 field wipes, which should be sufficient given that this deck is more and more 'going over' and really only wants 'just enough' interaction.

-1 Moonlight Bargain, +1 Turntimber Symbiosis  Flip - Not quite card advantage, but it doubles as a land and gives selection. And we're really getting more card advantage from the various sac outlets that pair with the commander's trigger, so a bulk "draw a bunch" is less and less valuable.

-1 Putrify, +1 Hagra Mauling  Flip - Not targeting artifacts is a loss, but doubling as a land is big game. And then Ramunap Excavator can play the land side from the graveyard!

-1 Reality Scramble, +1 Geode Ranger - Reality scramble was kinda inefficient unless targeting a planeswalker specifically, and was mostly just "value from topdecked lands". Geode Ranger is also "value from topdecked lands" (plus it's a landfall deck, so lands should always be better than normal)

-1 Rubblehulk, +1 Ancient Greenwarden - The various mutate creatures have moved a lot of deckspace dedicated to "Gyrus is suddenly big and dangeorus", so Rubblehulk is now somewhat redundant. Greenwarden, on the other hand, is craziness: double landfall, more lands from graveyard!

-1 Blasphemous Act, +1 Shatterskull Smashing  Flip - Assuredly a weaker card on the front face, but the face that the land half can be played from the graveyard is too tempting to pass up.

-1 Myriad Landscape, +1 Gnottvold Slumbermound - This should leave enough fetchy effects, and Gnottvold is a bit pricey, but that should hopefully make the fact that it's a "strip mine + crucible" loop less oppressive

-1 Yavimaya Elder, +1 Kazandu Mammoth  Flip - I've never really been impressed with Yavimaya Elder, and Mammoth is either a huge threat twice, or a land, or a huge threat into a land later!

-1 Xantcha, Sleeper Agentfoil, +1 Kardur, Doomscourge - The various sac outlets should let me trigger the bottom half off of tokens, and rebuying Kardur's trigger is big game.

-1 Jadelight Ranger, +1 Emberwilde Captain - I have a lot of (g)(g)(1) value creatures at this point, and Emberwilde should play a similar "etb to draw a card, then come back later to do it again", but also hopefully do a bit of bonus damage

-1 Khalni Heart Expedition, +1 Valakut Exploration - While not strict ramp, it takes less time to get online if it's drawn later and it loads the graveyard

-1 Retreat to Kazundu, +1 Meteoric Mace - Kazundu has ended up kinda medium power and meteroic mace hsould be something valuable plus giving Gyrus trample (and make him bigger if I had a small-medium gyrus that didn't die)

Walking OUt

DrunkManSquakin666, 4 years ago

Forgot to add this sooner, but in light of Taborax, Hope's Demise being a thing, I decided to add him. I also took out the planeswalkers and some other things in favor of a few new goodies.

So, yeah: Taborax, Hope's Demise has replaced Overseer of the Damned, Dolmen Gate has replaced Darksteel Plate, Carnage Altar has replaced Ghoulcaller Gisa, Mother of Runes is in, while Serra the Benevolent is out, and finally, Giver of Runes has been added for redundancy in place of Ob Nixilis Reignited.

I've also reduced the sideboard to 13 cards and swapped my Demonic Tutor back in, since the deck I took it out to add that to card to won't be needing it.

Lemme know what you think, eh? :)

None

TheWanderinGPlaneswalker, 4 years ago

Redid "sideboard" to add in some lands from the maybeboard that I think are high priority. Sideboard is being used as priority guide. Took out 1x Vedalken Orrery, 1x Unwinding clock, 1x Caged sun, 1x Glacial Chasm Added 1x Forsaken Monument. Forsaken monument is a better caged sun. Took out vedalken because while it would be cool to unwinding clocl and vedalken on opponents turn for multiple golos activations, I see this as more of a tap out ramp deck so I'm not sure what orrery could accomplish. Unwindinging clock for this reason too seems like it wont do anything since it's a sorcery speed deck. Caged sun's interaction with the world tree is cool and could still be useful, but I doubt I'll have 6 lands in play early on since the ramp is in the form of played artifacts. So Caged sun wont ramp early on at all, so for this reason it got cut. Glacial chasm could definitely be op and added back in, but it doesnt tap for mana, costs life, and importantly sacrifices one of our lands. Since we are colorless and can't land ramp like more traditional golos decks taking advantage of green, this is too high of a cost I think. **The deck is now 100 cards**

Big Bans = Big Changes

nUKe13, 4 years ago

With the big ban changes in the Modern format: Uro, Titan of Nature's Wrath and Field of the Dead being the main ones, we have a new meta with the potential for Mardu based decks to shine again.

Thank you all who have commented and helped the deck become what it is today. I’m excited to begin testing and seeing what this new meta has in store!

Mass 2021-Kaldheim Update

Citridon, 4 years ago

-1 Deadbridge Chant, +1 Ondu Inversion  Flip - I want one more wrath, since wrathing and then using Nethroi to rebuild faster is an excellent play pattern. Inversion also gives me another land in the early game

-1 Kathril, Aspect Warper, +1 Firja, Judge of Valor

-1 Necropanther, +1 Dream Devourer - I don't need quite this many mutates, I think. Nethroi is quite enough on his own, so extra mutates are potent, but not quite necessary enough I need to have medium cards just for the keyword.

-1 Huntmaster Liger, +1 Toski, Bearer of Secrets

-1 Adorned Pouncer, +1 Keleth, Sunmane Familiar - Pouncer is great with Nethroi, but only if it's down first and Nethroi wants to go on it. That makes it a bad topdeck post-Nethroi and not particularly appetizing while triggering nethroi. Keleth is a little worse to put Nethroi on (though still good) and much better in the other two scenarios

-1 Void Beckoner, +1 Maja, Bretagard Protector - A bit of nonbo with she and her tokens being human, but Maja is only 2 power for an anthem + army in a can, making her great for Nethroi to bring back!

-1 Reyhan, Last of the Abzan *f-etch*, +1 Grakmaw, Skyclave Ravager - Oh look, a 0/0 wiht 3 plus one counters for Golgari+1, which gives value when it dies, but this one isn't human! Pretty much a strict upgrade.

Mass 2021-Kaldheim Update

Citridon, 4 years ago

-1 Birthing Boughs, +1 Maskwood Nexus - The same thing, but massively upgraded

-1 Angrath, Minotaur Pirate, +1 Amorphous Axe - Trading a "resurrect Mirror Entity" that's kinda weak for "turn something into a changeling" that's kinda pricey (and godo can find)

-1 Angrath's Fury, +1 The Bears of Littjara - Since Angrath is gone, this card is just very bad. Instead, lets get another changeling, a pump for all my changelings (or everyone if mirror entity is out), and then a BEATING

-1 Shapesharer, +1 Moritte of the Frost - Just a better clone!

-1 Universal Automaton, +1 Archpriest of Iona - Might be a bit of greed, but I've not drawn the Automaton yet and haven't really missed it. I also got a new axe to mitigate the change in changeling numbers, and shapeshifter litjara bears! So I want ot see how Archpriest plays in the only deck I have that can possibly turn it on!

-1 Sylvan Library, +1 Coveted Prize - I feel weird putting in a blanket tutor, even one that's a payoff for neat tribal stuff, so I'm replacing a card that also reads "apex consistency" and trying it out.

-1 Swarmyard, +1 Tyrite Sanctum - Just better protection (for one creature in specific)

-1 Memorial to Folly, +1 The World Tree - Only have so much room for utility lands, and if I can pull of hte world tree one of its hits actually does Memorial to Folly's effect! Also, ALL MY CHANGELINGS INTO PLAY

-1 Hungry Lynx, +1 Magda, Brazen Outlaw - Treasure is good, and technically I have a few artifacts and "dragons". Plus the Maskwood Nexus makes this find any creature.

-1 seshiro the annointed, +1 Anowon, the Ruin Thieffoil - Not quite guaranteed, but Anowon should still work as "when your creatures hit someone draw a card", he gives +1/+1, and he only costs 4!

-1 Horde of Notions, +1 Zareth San, the Trickster

-1 Kindred Dominance, +1 Crippling Fear - I appear to have lost this card (dominance), so for now I'll use the limited mana efficient Kindred Dominance Kaldhiem introduced

Lots of new sets means lots of new upgrades!

Cabej, 4 years ago

It's been a while since I've taken this deck out and I noticed that there was some room for improvement. Although this is one of the first commander decks I made from scratch, it doesn't necessarily fit into my current play-style. That said, an update is in order!

Evolving Wilds -----> Prismatic Vista

Terramorphic Expanse -----> Fabled Passage

Selesnya Sanctuary -----> Arctic Treeline

Temple of the False God -----> Forest

I'll start with the land changes. Like I've said in previous updates: better lands are just better. Prismatic Vista and Fabled Passage are no brainers, they accomplish the same role but with upside. I decided to remove Selesnya Sanctuary for Arctic Treeline because the latter can be searched out with numerous cards in the deck such as Grasslands or Windswept Heath. There have been plenty of occasions where I didn't care if the land comes into play tapped, but still preferred to fix my mana. It's the same reason I included Scattered Groves in the past. Lastly, as much as I am a fan of Temple of the False God, it has been under-performing and replacing it with a basic land will just be more consistent.

Metallic Mimic -----> Realmwalker

Garruk's Packleader -----> Beast Whisperer

Soul of the Harvest -----> Toski, Bearer of Secrets

Adaptive Automatonfoil -----> Generous Gift

Scour from Existence -----> Beast Within

Hardened Scales -----> Teferi's Protection

Ajani, the Greathearted -----> Wrath of God

Looking at the deck, I realized that mana curve was somewhat high. I know that commander/EDH is the format that loves to drop big baddies and huge spells, but over the past couple of years my decks tend to have a lower curve. I made some of these changes with that in mind. That's why I opted to replace Garruk's Packleader, Soul of the Harvest, and Scour from Existence. I chose to replace Hardened Scales because it doesn't do a whole lot in the deck. Obviously, it makes Dromoka's bolster ability better and helps Gyre Sage get bigger quicker, but other than that it doesn't really impact the board in a meaningful way. Ajani, the Greathearted was a test piece and it under-performed, so he's out. I took out Adaptive Automatonfoil and Metallic Mimic because I felt that my creatures were big enough already and that a creature-type specific anthem effect just wasn't necessary.

I brought in Teferi's Protection because having another piece that could keep my army alive is always nice. Also, it can help prevent me from losing to a combo out of nowhere, even if only for a turn. I added Beast Within and Generous Gift because I felt the deck needed some more spot removal and the fact that they can hit just about anything means that they will almost never be a dead card in my hand. I included Realmwalker because it's technically a dragon and has a relevant ability for a tribal deck. Toski, Bearer of Secrets and Beast Whisperer are lower costing draw engines, so in they go. I decided on including Wrath of God because I felt the deck needed another board-wipe. There are plenty of decks that can fill the battlefield faster than this one, so having another piece that can deal with it is always great.

Deck update - February 2021

PartyJ, 4 years ago

The last set we decided being legal in our playgroup will be 'Theros Beyond Death'. See the decks description for the reason behind this.

Added two new cards from 'Theros Beyond Death':

So yeah... I read what World Tree does

topocart, 4 years ago

If you have seen my deck previously, you can see that I have changed some things. I got rid off all the Giants I had in my deck and put some "maybe" cards to adapt it into my new synergies. I read what The World Tree does and... well. I just KNEW I had to put it. Put Ashaya because a worry I had in my deck was how I would manage to tap my dwarves when Magda is on the field (that's why I also put some Vehicles into the deck). I really think that this change was for the best.

Mass 2021-Kaldheim Update

Citridon, 4 years ago

-1 Swiftfoot Boots, +1 Lightning Greaves - I picked up the foil box topper greaves, and it's real shiny.....

-1 Sword of War and Peace, +1 Blazing Sunsteel - The punisher effect should work for evasion, and this lets this sword be either "big damage to player" like War and Peace or "removal" which is a new dimension for the slot.

-1 Plains, +1 Axgard Armory - With only Sword of the Animist pulling them out, this will still leave plenty of plains while getting a focused tutor inot my lands.

-1 Godo, Bandit Warlord, +1 Armored Skyhunter - An odd lateral shift, but I think Skyhunter will end up about as powerful as Godo. Looking at the top 6 is weaker than tutoring, but it's repeatable. The second combat is potent but only works for Godo, and flying is something I actually don't give with equipment, so it's more upside than it looks. And Armored skyhunter is 2 mana cheaper and easier on the mana base (especially as I add more red elsewhere due to Zendikar 3).

-1 Stone Haven Outfitter, +1 Akiri, Fearless Voyager - Upgrading outfitter from "recoup some value from equipped creatures" to "card advantage and protect equipped creatures".

-1 Daretti, Scrap Savant, +1 Nahiri, Heir of the Ancients - All of Daretti's hits and tricks also work for Nahiri and Daretti NEVER reaches ultimate, so getting a 3rd usable ability is nice! Plus, she can be removal that leaves behind a Nahiri!

-1 Leonin Shikari, +1 Koll, the Forgemaster - Shikari is a unique an powerful card, but it mostly ends up working out to "I can move swords and boots to stop removal". Koll can accomplish a similar feat of protecting my limited creatures by putting them back in my hand, and he'll work better if my board ends up smaller. Also, as a bonus, he's an anthem!

-1 Thalia's Lancers, +1 Halvar, God of Battle  Flip - Not quite the same thing, but Halvar's sword/body dual sides makes him a similar piece of consistency to Thalia's Lancers and he's SIGNIFICANTLY more powerful!

-1 Baleful Strix, +1 Valki, God of Lies  Flip - Instead of drawing one card, put everyone down one and gain intel. Bonus, sometimes he's a planeswalker!

-1 Oath of Gideon, +1 Akroma's Will - I'm sad to cut it, but space is tight and Akroma's will is crazy powerful and a legal target for Sunforger

More interaction

YourStar98, 4 years ago

I am looking for more interaction with other players, because right now that is what makes me lose the game the most. Therefore I put in Knight of Autumn and swapped out Malakir Cullblade because it didn't seem to work in my deck that well. It was never a really good play.

Mass 2021-Kaldheim Update

Citridon, 4 years ago

-1 Emeria, the Sky Ruin, +1 Brightclimb Pathway  Flip - As more and more other good lands emerge, with the deck split pretty evenly on white and black pips, Emeria shifts more and more from "value land" to warping the land base.

-1 Swamp, +1 Vault of Champions - New Untapped dual! Huzzah

-1 Swamp +1 Agadeem's Awakening  Flip - Getting in a land/spell slot to get more utility out of hte mana base

-1 Swamp, +1 Great Hall of Starnheim

-1 Plains, +1 Emeria's Call  Flip - Now that I don't need quite as many plains, there's room for more white utility lands

-1 Utter End, +1 Hagra Mauling  Flip - A bit more narrow than utter end, but it can double as a land, letting me sneak in an extra .5 to my land count.

-1 Orbs of Warding, +1 Reidane, God of the Worthy  Flip - Primarily viewing Reidane as her backside in this case, where it's one mana cheaper, prevents damage from all sources and to my permanents as well, and while it doesn't give hexproof it is going to make targeting me more expensive. Teyo is also covering flat hexproof, and Reidane does add the front side as a backup option.

-1 Spirit Bonds, +1 Court of Grace - I lose the ability to protect existing creatures, but the monarch is valuable to Teysa, and this still provides tokens (and the mana difference is less easy on the curve, but will come out even in the end)

-1 Avacyn, Guardian Angel, +1 Archon of Coronation - This Avacyn has ended up in 3 decks at this point, and both she and the archon do a bit of "prevent damage to me" action. Archon also introduces the monarch, and while I'll need to make some curve adjustments to make up for this swap, it'll cost less in the end.

-1 Marchesa's Decree, +1 Court of Ambition

-1 Ghoulcaller Ghisa, +1 Keeper of the Accord - A bit of curve smoothing and also getting more catchup ramp. Ghisa has just been a big target in a deck that's not using her as well as she can be used, so I'll try and find a better home for her.

-1 Pontiff of Blight, +1 Liesa, Shroud of Dusk - Another card that has performed well, but is only doing okay compared to its potential in this deck. Liesa should do a similar "gain life and drain life" role, but also adds notable pressure and helps adjust the curve back

-1 Sorin, Solemn Visitor, +1 Kaya the Inexorable - This deck does love a good "vindicate, but bonus" and Kaya does that nicely. She also gives some insurance against commander tax and protects other clutch creatures!
