Slash the Ranks Discussion

JimmyInferno on How to Be a Kwain-ker

I just saw this post cPute so sorry for the late reply!

At the moment I am unsure on how else other than Slash the Ranks we would self-sacrifice the Academy Rector but if you have any ideas I am certainly open to them.

I love the suggestions and I am looking for space to add them now, the only issue with Back to Basics is it really affects my deck as I run minimum basic lands. If you are running a deck that can suit it more by all means make your opponents cry (then tell me all about it mwahaha).

What I am considering is adding in High Market , Diamond Valley and Smokestack as these cards still synergise with our plan to pace, pretend to make political friends (for those who play politics - who would hurt a bunny) and also stax stax stax!

Honourable mentions to Claws of Gix and Martyr's Cause as it would protect Kwain.

The best you can do is just run more board wipes. You're a spellslinger deck, so they're your best friend. The new one, Slash the Ranks , is great, because your commander is so expensive. On that note, are Firesong and Sunspeaker your real commanders, or just a stand-in? Your deck's three colors, and they're only two.

Thought more about this and there's still tons of options for this deck really. In my previous comment I mention how you may want to double up on Extus's effect with stuff like Ravos, Soultender but there's also enchantment options that may be a little harder for your opponents to get rid of. Stuff like Debtors' Knell and Palace Siege can also be useful enchantments to help you bring useful stuff back to cast multiple times. Crackling Doom is also a pretty good card that you could add as a substitute for any of the kill spells. A possibility for this deck could also be to reanimate some troublesome creatures for your opponents like Master of Cruelties Raving Dead Virtus the Veiled or Dire Fleet Ravager to help make killing your opponents with the sorcery easier. More boardwipes that only affect your opponents would also be good so something like Ruinous Ultimatum can help make the job a little easier. Other boardwipes such as Slash the Ranks Austere Command Merciless Eviction and Martial Coup give you some more options and not only target creatures but other pesky permanents as well.

Hiya! I've played feather before and I can say that if I were to recommend any cuts and adds here, I'd say to remove Niveous Wisps and Acrobatic Maneuver in favor of Grapeshot and Slash the Ranks . You'd be surprised how easy it is to use Grapeshot to ping things off the board that are annoying, just using the one "real" copy of the spell on feather so you can do it over again. then Slash the Ranks is a new addition, but nuking everything but feather definitely makes attacking in lethal much easier.

Have you considered Slash the Ranks or Single Combat as board wipes that let you keep your Commander in all her equipped glory?

Hiya! I've got a few concerns with the list. The major one is the fact that you have almost no card draw in your deck. I only counted 3 cards that could generate you card advantage, so I worry that your deck will run out of gas and/or can get blown out really easily by a board wipe. The other is some rather interesting card choices. A few examples: You play Winds of Rath in the deck, but you only play a pair of auras. Slash the Ranks seems like a cool card, but this deck seems to want more creatures on board than just your commanders, so it feels like a non-bo too. You've also got a lot of equipment and synergies to go with it, but your commanders don't really encourage equipment. Ardenn, Intrepid Archaeologist is probably better for that. Akroma + Rograhk wants you to go wide with aggressively costed key-worded creatures. So I would suggest cutting by a lot on the equipment synergies as well as cutting a lot of your high-cmc creatures and getting more low-cost key-worded creatures along with ways to protect them and ways to rebuild when you get blown out. And of course, more card draw.

Gravebreaker Lamia: You do get to tutor something to the grave, but you don't really cast from the grave. I'd rather just play Final Parting and also tutor something to hand.

The Birth of Meletis is kinda meh. It's an early enchanment yes but I feel it doesn't do much. I'd rather play an Luminarch Ascension or just a mana rock.

Mythos of Snapdax seems too restrictive. Another boardwipe sounds much better. Still a low costing one such as Wrath of God, or the new one from commander legends that's mono white and 5 mana Slash the Ranks.

Merciless Eviction should go in for most boardwipes as it's so good. Perhaps for Ruinous Ultimatum as that is very color restrictive and merciless is less mana.

Aphemia, the Cacophony isn't that good.

With your low curve and many rocks I'd cut a land or cut the two Diamonds as they're kinda bad. Sadly. They're acceptable in mono colored but not really here.

Ghostly Prison/Sphere of Safety is necessary pillowfort. There's a black version too with cumulative upkeep as well. Might be good in our meta against many of David's decks, as well as mine.

Alseid of Life's Bounty is just great. Protects either Ghen or an enchantment you don't want dying at that time.

Agent of Erebos: Some much needed gravehate.

Aegis of the Gods is good for protection against direct burn.

Spirit of the Labyrinth is good if you're leaning into the staxxy parts of cards like Eidolon of Rhetoric. Along the same lines Stony Silence and Aura of Silence are nice picks.

I have many more recommendations but these are the start. I don't want to particularly overwhelm or change the deck.

GL my guy.
