Relic Vial

Artifact

, , Sacrifice a creature: Draw a card.

As long as you control a Cleric, Relic Vial has "Whenever a creature you control dies (is put into the graveyard from the battlefield), each opponent loses 1 life and you gain 1 life."

  • Welcoming Vampire = good draw.
  • Tocasia's Welcome = good draw.
  • Esper Sentinel = grade A+ draw.
  • Loran of the Third Path doubles as removal so it good. It good card draw to at the expense of giving your opponents a card too (not good).
  • Staff of Compleation paying 4 life for a card is gonna hurt really bad. After 2 activations, the 3rd it's a total 12 life lost. 26% of your starting life total.
  • Relic Vial this seems like it's a good fit for the cmdr but if you want value the turn your cmdr comes down you'll need 2 more mana to activate it. This is slow. Beside your cmdr you'll need other good targets to sac. This one's out for me too.
  • Endless Atlas is at best average.
  • Gate to the Afterlife - this is the card advantage.

I have a Ao, the Dawn Sky deck I am working on and I was wondering if there are any permanent spells that draws me more the one card for 4 or less. The deck has a large amount of artifact and I will be sacrificing Ao few times through the game. So far I have Welcoming Vampire, Tocasia's Welcome, Staff of Compleation, Relic Vial, Loran of the Third Path, Gate to the Afterlife, Endless Atlas and Esper Sentinel.

Hi Crow-Umbra & carpecanum, I finally had time to update the deck. Thank you guys so much for your feedback. It is very much appreciated! I'll start from the top of your recommendations.

Luminarch Ascension Used to be the number 1 game winner back in the days when our playgroup started playing commander. My friend had one, I have never played one myself. This deck is THE opportunity for me to bring that nostalgia back to our commandertable. Pet card. Can't cut. You're probably right that the oppos will prevent it from getting counters, but I'm going to pop Angels out of it or die trying xD

Draw

Plumb the Forbidden for Phyrexian Arena is a great swap! In most games I find myself mainly active in my turns and quite passive during other players' turns. So next to the Black Market Connections comparison as you pointed out, Plumb has another benefit of being an instant!

Tokens

Kaya, Geist Hunter got swapped for Relic Vial. Way cooler! Court of Grace is cut for Adeline, Resplendent Cathar. I find the Monarch a very cool inclusion in a game of commander but the card is just not good enough. I think I was forcing adding a Monarch card too much. Hero of Bladehold is another great tip as a token creator. I've swapped the Hero for Vraan, Executioner Thane. Brimaz, King of Oreskos, and Leonin Warleader are both excellent options aswell, but I simply run out of cuts.

That brings me to my final part. Cathars' Crusade is awesome in this deck and I'd also like to add a Necropotence but I simply have no idea what to cut for those anymore. I think I'm already quite short on lands and I'd preferably add 1 draw spell and 2 ramp spells..

Again, thank you both for your feedback. You rock!

Sure thing shadowjules. Since every creature in the deck (aside from Pulmonic Sliver) is a changeling, they are all both Eggs and Slivers. So if you sacrifice the egg Atla makes, or just any changeling, you will reveal cards from your deck via Atla's ability to get either: 1) another changeling or 2) Pulmonic Sliver. If you get another changeling, just sacrifice it and repeat until you get Pulmonic Sliver. Once the Sliver is out, when you sacrifice a changeling you can stack your triggers so that the Sliver's ability resolves first putting the sacked changeling on top of your deck, then Atla's ability resolves to put that changeling right back into play, letting you loop the changeling forever.

This loop does nothing on its own, but any one of the following cards allow you to win from looping changelings:

Dragon Tempest
Goblin Bombardment
Impact Tremors
Altar of Dementia
Embalmer's Tools
Relic Vial
Blasting Station
Vigilante Justice
Kyren Negotiations
Outpost Siege
Where Ancients Tread
Warstorm Surge

You should add Kor Celebrant and Relic Vial if you want some extra lifegain.

Relic Vial is a good new wincon for Darien given how important clerics are to the game plan

Martyr's Cause and Fanatical Devotion are good ways to trigger the vial and get extra value from your tokens. Idol of Oblivion is good extra value too imo

That decision makes sense.

I'd say the sac outlets not costing any mana usually are the best ones. There are some I'd like to suggest in addition to your list (I didn't double check your decks, so I don't know if you play any of them.):

Carrion Feeder

Spawning Pit

Relic Vial

Another card that goes well into decks that want to sacrifice is Smothering Abomination.

ichibancho: That's a nice looking deck list! The only hangup I have is that you're only running 30 lands. Nothing in your deck is terribly expensive to cast, I think 5 being the highest CMC. You've got some ramp creatures and spells that I think are kind of redundant given the low casting cost of the deck. More often than not I think you'd prefer to draw a land than Priest of Gix . Same goes for Land Tax & Tithe . All great spells in their own right, but generally speaking I think hitting land drops every turn is going to be better for the deck's performance. I'd aim for 34 or 35 lands. =)

Stuff like Night's Whisper and Village Rites is okay too, but you would get considerably more value out of something like a Midnight Reaper , Phyrexian Arena or even Relic Vial .

There's a few creatures in there I wouldn't bother with. Daru Spiritualist , Shaman en-Kor and Geralf's Messenger are all places I'd be looking to add lands or upgrades. With Conspiracy out Geralf's Messenger is pretty sick value, but to me that's not enough of a reason to keep him. If you're looking for the life-loss I'd suggest Zulaport Cutthroat or Bastion of Remembrance .

I tried to build this deck to function competently without Orah in play. Especially if you're winning the game, your opponents are definitely going to try to keep your Commander off the board. Sometimes I am a bit short on Clerics, but because the deck doesn't hinge on Orah's ability it has never really been a problem. One game in particular I was kind of frustrated that I couldn't hit a 3 drop Cleric for combo chains, but I ended up bleeding my opponents out with Karmic Guide + Reveillark + Zulaport Cutthroat haha, so it really depends on how you play the game out more than the tools you're drawing. =)
