Blightstep Pathway Discussion

Hey, sweet deck. Let's take a look at win conditions and lands. I've identified a problem with your deck: You aggressively want to control the board with your 1-3 drops. While other players are playing 6 mana bombs every turn your are trying to eke out board advantage with 3 or 4 creatures a turn.

  • You don't need board wipes in this deck, they actively go against your game-plan, and in no way help you win.
  • Less removal in general. I counted 18 pieces of removal in your instants and sorceries. Keep Path to Exile, Swords to Plowshares, and Damn and get rid of the rest. You ARE the threat, if your deck is running slowly to the point that you feel like you need removal, you need better creatures.

As for lands, use this mana base.

Lands:

How would I change your win condition...well you are trying to do knight tribal...

Consider these cards:

Remove these cards:

-15 pieces of removal from instants and sorceries, keep Path to Exile, Swords to Plowshares, and Damn

Good luck, and happy hunting. Let me know if you want to continue the conversation or have questions

If you want a cheaper $ option than Grand Abolisher (or would like another card that can do similar work), Wandering Archaic  Flip is a substantial tax on all opponent's instants/sorceries, but that tax matters most with countermagic, making everyone else's counters either very good (if you want the same thing countered for example), or very expensive (people usually consider Cancel unplayable for costing 3 mana). Archaic isn't as good at protecting your own stuff, but it's a way bigger effect generally.

You might also like Generous Gift over Disenchant, and I prefer Vanishing Verse over Fracture, but Verse is more of a competitive card maybe. Slayers' Stronghold might be nice, vigilance and haste are useful for WR.

For (potentially) untapped duals, there are a few cycles worth a look. Pathways are good (but no longer cheap unfortunately, they might go down after they rotate out of Standard though), Blightstep Pathway  Flip, Brightclimb Pathway  Flip, and Needleverge Pathway  Flip are all solid cards to keep an eye out for. Luxury Suite, Spectator Seating, and Vault of Champions are duals that usually come in untapped when it matters, and are considered among the best non-fetchable dual lands. You could try the new cycle from Innistrad, Haunted Ridge, Shattered Sanctum, and Sundown Pass are good as long as you're not running a low land count, 35 should probably work. While Sulfurous Springs is pricey, Caves of Koilos is cheap, Battlefield Forge isn't bad either, they're always untapped and by mid game you usually just use them for colourless and they have no downside. Concealed Courtyard, Inspiring Vantage, and Blackcleave Cliffs are very good, some are really expensive once again. Urborg, Tomb of Yawgmoth is a great way to make all your lands Swamps, handy for stuff like Cabal Coffers as well as just to fix your mana. Shadowblood Ridge is an untapped source of RB, which isn't a bad, but there is only the 1 in your wedge of colours, this land might be handy if you run a cycle where the RB land is really pricey.

Hope some of this is helpful, the deck seems pretty decent.

  • Just trying to figure out how to do a Red-Black landbase cost-effectively (as the fetches are expensive as all hell, and the shocks aren't exactly budget-friendly either). I think the following would probably work pretty well as the landbase for the above-suggested deck:

22 Lands:

Hey Privian, thanks for commenting. You can definitely reduce the cost of the deck by swapping out the cards you listed. Here are my suggestions for replacements:

Plateau > Needleverge Pathway  Flip

Scrubland > Brightclimb Pathway  Flip

Badlands > Blightstep Pathway  Flip

Mox Diamond > Fellwar Stone

Grim Monolith > Dark Ritual

Imperial Seal > Grim Tutor

Ravages of War > Armageddon

Ravages of War is identical to Armageddon, I just happen to have a copy of Ravages I picked up years ago.

You could also run Mox Opal, but in that case I would also run the Mirrodin artifact lands (ex:Vault of Whispers.)

Welcome to the game.

At first glance, there are two things that jump out.

1) This is not legal for the Modern format (Dirge of Dread and Vault of Whispers are emboldened in red to indicate they’re illegal in the format). This isn’t a big deal at all, as both can be substituted for different cards quite easily.

2) You could use some dual lands in your mana base. There are a huge variety of Modern legal lands that can produce and , some better (and therefore more expensive) than others. Top tier stuff would be Bloodstained Mire and Blood Crypt, but they’re also the most costly. Middle grade options are things like Blightstep Pathway  Flip or Haunted Ridge/Dragonskull Summit, and the cheapest (but still perfectly playable) duals would be lands that enter tapped—Bloodfell Caves, Cinder Barrens etc.

Any of the above would work here, the idea being to be able to play either a black or a red card as soon as possible, without having to wait because you don’t have the appropriate color.

There are some better budget lands than the ones you are currently running. I've put parentheses around some that aren't quite as cheap and bolded the ones that are definitely in your price range.

Painlands: Llanowar Wastes, (Karplusan Forest)

Check lands: Dragonskull Summit, Rootbound Crag, (Woodland Cemetery)

MDFC lands: Cragcrown Pathway  Flip, (Blightstep Pathway  Flip), (Darkbore Pathway  Flip)

Scry lands: Temple of Malady, Temple of Malice, Temple of Abandon

About the manabase:

1) The deck is aggressive and low to the ground so you want to curve out well and use the maximum amount of mana you can - this means that the budget taplands Bloodfell Caves should definitely be taken out.

2) You have very restrictive mana costs, specifically in Lightning Skelemental , so you definitely need to run a decent number of dual lands.

Because of these two reasons, I think you definitely need to add more dual lands (at least 8) even if you need to double the budget just because the deck suffers so much with the current manabase (because fucking WotC decided that lands were going to be the priciest thing to keep any deck running smoothly). The Dragonskull Summit s in the maybeboard should definitely be included. Smoldering Marsh would be good if you only ran 8 nonbasics, but if you decide to add more then I wouldn't put it in. Same with the Blightstep Pathway  Flips, although they aren't as good as the summits for their cost. Foreboding Ruins is another option for less expensive duals, although for some reason the BR SOI lands are more expensive than the other ones.

You could probably also cut down a little on lands to 18-20, since you have Igneous Pouncer to help tutor your lands and mana fix.
