Huntmaster Liger

Creature — Cat

Mutate (If you cast this spell for its mutate cost, put it over or under target non-Human creature you own. They mutate into the creature on top plus all abilities from under it.)

Whenever this creature mutates, other creatures you control get +X/+X until end of turn, where X is the number of times this creature has mutated.

ellie-is — I know, that rat art is so cute! They would be perfect for your deck! I guess look on the bright side.... I've heard the foil Secret Lair cards are extra horrid as far as foils go. Wouldn't do your deck much good if they were so curled they weren't tournament legal! Heh

Thanks for the resource suggestion. I'm totally out of touch with the Modern meta these days, so yeah, I'll check that out and see what sideboards look like these days.

I_Want_To_PlayAllTheDecks — Thanks for the feedback! I love the effect of Kaheera; not so big a fan of the depictions of cats in Ikoria. That said, you're right that there's no reason to not run it, deckbuilding-wise, and since it starts outside the game, maybe I can imagine it as, like, some mystical cat spirit from the spirit world, a la Avatar: The Last Airbender. ;)

As to Cubwarden and Huntmaster Liger, I did actually consider them when I was initially looking at my cat options, but in addition to being the weird Ikoria cats, they're also 4-drops and don't play nice with CoCo. Do you think I should move away from CoCo to open up my options?

abbatromebone — I agree, Feline Sovereign is awesome, and it's a must-run in any full-blown cat deck. But as mentioned in the description, this is specifically a lion deck, so cats like Regal Caracal and Steppe Lynx don't fit in. I realize this flavor decision makes the deck weaker, but I'm fine with that.

CoCo is already in the mainboard, and I'm also already testing out Honor of the Pure. But I had never considered Lead the Stampede before; I'll have to test it. What's the minimum creature count a deck is recommended to have to make Lead worth it? Same as CoCo?

As to lands, would you still recommend me replacing Canopy Vista, even though I don't need the extra fetches for Steppe Lynx?

I would gladly welcome some help with the sideboard! But I don't have a meta right now. I've been out of Modern for a few years, but my playgroup recently decided to try getting into it. So what would you recommend for the sideboard for the overall Modern meta right now? That'll be good enough until I get into a local meta.

So since you have only cats in your main Kaheera, the Orphanguard is a free-roll companion, and a good synergistic one at that. I also thought Cubwarden and Huntmaster Liger could be decent if you want to have a little mutate subtleme instead of the weaker cats currently. They also look a lot like lions(and the alt-art versions are sick).

There are a high number of legends - ever thought of including something like Huntmaster Liger, Majestic Auricorn, Cubwarden, or Vulpikeet? Mutating one of them over a legendary allows it to remove its legend status while keeping its abilities. You could even throw in Necropanther since you can play it for the mutate cost without needing the black mana.

Cubwarden is interesting. Keeper of Fables can help you draw cards- Felidar Cub for enchantment removal. Huntmaster Liger as an anthem.

Not super competitive, but flavorful.

StopShot on I want an enchantress commander …

I would personally run Nethroi, Apex of Death. Nethroi has lifelink which can be fun to pump up with auras, but Nethroi's reanimate ability can be seriously powerful at enchantment reanimation if you build your deck right.

Auramancer, Griffin Dreamfinder, Monk Idealist, Restoration Specialist, Trusty Retriever, Acolyte of Affliction, Golgari Findbroker, Lurrus of the Dream-Den, Eternal Witness, Felidar Guardian. These make excellent targets to recur enchantments and auras with as you could recur 4 to 5 enchantments every time Nethroi mutates.

Do keep in mind a few card draw enchantment creatures also have 0 power making them free to reanimate too. Creatures like: Argothian Enchantress, Mesa Enchantress, Verduran Enchantress, Kor Spiritdancer.

Since you're in black it should also be easy to recur creatures with cheap mutate costs such as: Vulpikeet, Migratory Greathorn, Insatiable Hemophage, Huntmaster Liger and Gemrazer.

So if you get creative with the deck building Nethroi, Apex of Death can practically be a Crystal Chimes on a stick.

Also if you run out of enchantments to recur I'd recommend running these enchantments as they're easy to both put into the graveyard and obtain value off of them which is what will make this strategy even stronger: Sinister Concoction, Seal of Primordium, Seal of Cleansing, Soul Snare, Weight of Conscience, Aura of Silence, Font of Fertility, Sterling Grove and Unbridled Growth. Sigil of the Nayan Gods and Cast Out also work if you only intend to cycle them.

Have you looked into Cubwarden instead of Arynx? Since mutate is still casting you get a dog and 2 cats with Rin and Seri out. Huntmaster Liger is also good if you want to boost your creatures.

I would definitely add Triumph of the Hordes and some Pump spells for combat tricks

as for mutaty creatures Huntmaster Liger would be neat. Mysterious Egg would help pump Necropanther can help with recursion. Regal Leosaur for another pump. Vulpikeet is kinda heafty (as are a lot of these) but can help pump.

I believe if you mutate your creatures will maintain that infect keyword.

I hope this helps you at least a tad.

So what I meant by "You can't win by Infect alone" is that you need to have a reliable subtheme that works with your primary wincon - but can be a viable means of victory itself. Infect is politically weak in a 4 player game. Your opponents will typically single you out and work together to remove your infect pieces - or deny you the chance of playing magic altogether. Having more cards that can protect and boost your Voltron is key. Additionally, having more interaction will help keep you in a position of power. Consider including the following creatures to help with your voltron-ing:

Each of the previously mentioned can help bolster your constantly mutating monster. Mutate just seems like a keyword that works very similarly to Voltron - but you're just doing it with creatures that have "When this creature mutates do x". I'd take a look at more cards from the Ikoria set and try and capitalize on getting more keywords involved.
