Kathril, Aspect Warper

Legendary Creature — Nightmare Insect

When Kathril, Aspect Warper enters the battlefield, put a flying counter on any creature you control if a creature card in your graveyard has flying. Repeat this process for first strike, double strike, deathtouch, hexproof, indestructible, lifelink, menace, reach, trample and vigilance. Then put a +1/+1 counter on Kathril for each counter put on a creature this way.

Fleecemane Lion doesn't have the key word abilities hexproof and indestructible. It has an ability that grants those abilities. So, Kathril, Aspect Warper will not distribute counters from it.

The same is true for things that will have a keyword ability from an unconditional static ability at all times when they are on the battlefield. The Archetypes (Archetype of Endurance, Archetype of Finality, Archetype of Courage) do not have keyword abilities to distribute the keyword counters from.

I'm building a deck that incorporates Kathril, Aspect Warper and I'm wondering, if Fleecemane Lion is in my graveyard, would I be able to distribute counters for hexproof and indestructible since his card has that ability when monstrous?

@ bushido_man96 Thanks a lot for your comment (and upvote). I'm always happy about some advices and guidance :)

Oriq Loremage is already locked in.

I mainly want to use Minion Reflector to be able to distribute twice as much counters with Kathril, Aspect Warper to either my other creatures or Kathril itself. So while the original Kathril has to hold back with attacking (summoning sickness), the token (copy) of it can already swing in for some heavy commander damage due to the haste ability. To me this sounds like a good plan, or am i missing something here?

Carddraw-wise i feel the same - there should be more in it. But isn't Rishkar's Expertise a bit situational? What if i just got boardwiped? And if i have the "big guys" out already i am probably fine anyways even with a thin hand. Or is this just me, being an unexperienced mtg player thinking stupid stuff like this? Maybe just add "simpler" card draws like Night's Whisper etc.?

Have you considered Swarmyard? I know you run a lot of cards with 'Sacrifice to Regenerate' to keep Kathril, Aspect Warper alive, but redundancy is always a good thing when your commander being alive is a vital piece of your decks game plan. It's saved me several time because not everyone remembers it when they try to remove Kathril, Aspect Warper.

And in line with your more targeted mill strategy, I'd also suggest Key to the City. It gives a Discard outlet, makes it so Kathril, Aspect Warper can't be blocked, and can provide card draw too.

bushido_man96 Thanks for checking out my deck!

I've never heard of Fanatical Devotion or Martyr's Cause, so thanks for those suggestions. I also have a Survival of the Fittest in another deck, but I haven't gotten around to making a proxy for this deck yet.

I'm definitely going to snag a copy of Reprocess though. That will help get my Indestructible creatures like Oketra the True get into the graveyard faster. And it does feel on theme with Kathril, Aspect Warper

Monopoly1307 on Lifelink/doublestrike/trample on blocking

So I have a Kathril, Aspect Warper on the board with all its keywords.

Flying, Reach, Deathtouch, Lifelink, Trample, Menace, First Strike, Doublestrike, Indestructible, Hexproof, Vigilance

It is a 14/14. So if my opponent attacks me with a 4/4 lets say and I block with Kathril, im not sure exactly how the interaction would work with my blocker having trample, lifelink, doublestrike, and even deathtouch involved.

Would I get only the 14 life off of lifelink? or would the doublestrike still trigger because of trample even though the blocker is dead and give me 28 life?

I couldn't find an answer for this anywhere, any help would be greatly aprreciated thanks.

Necrosis24 on Using the graveyard as a …

When I first got into edh I didn’t want to discard or sacrifice my permanents, but after changing my Chromium, the Mutable into a Varina, Lich Queen deck I have grown to love messing with my graveyard and am okay with exiling cards permanently as well.

Some of my favorite interactions have come thru using Altar of Dementia with Faith's Reward sacrificing my board to mill out an opponent then bringing it all back for some etb triggers with Binding Mummy or Noxious Ghoul.

Recently built Kathril, Aspect Warper which utilizes self-mill and recurs all my creatures with Odric, Lunarch Marshal each creature is to be feared.

You can lose everything to a Tormod's Crypt or Leyline of the Void but overall having graveyard recursion makes me less worried about protecting my pieces, so I can sometimes make seemingly unfavorable plays that actually benefit me in the long run.

Dread is No Mercy on a body.

Stormtide Leviathan and Blazing Archon simply say "you may not"

Archangel of Tithes and Windborn Muse both have similar effects that make easier to attack someone else, while Michiko Konda, Truth Seeker and Phyrexian Obliterator drive that point home even further.

But if you want the carrot rather than the stick, there's Edric, Spymaster of Trest and Karazikar, the Eye Tyrant to offer up cards for attacking your opponents instead. And related to Karazikar's goading ability Grenzo, Havoc Raiser can help you keep your opponent open if you're going wide, and Marisi, Breaker of the Coil is that same ability but even stronger as you only need to connect with one creatre.

Platinum Angel and Platinum Emperion make attacking you pointless unless you can also deal with them.

Sevinne, the Chronoclasm make an excellent blocker, and both Angus Mackenzie and Lady Evangela offer fog and fog-light effects on your commmander.

Eight-and-a-Half-Tails works similarly to Mother of Runes if you have the mana to pour into it, and Giver of Runes will protect something else in a way similar to mom.

Pairing together first strike with deathtouch is always a good method too, Glissa, the Traitor has this on her own, but it doesn't take much work for Kathril, Aspect Warper to do the same.
