Kathril, Aspect Warper

Kathril, Aspect Warper

Legendary Creature — Nightmare Insect

When Kathril, Aspect Warper enters the battlefield, put a flying counter on any creature you control if a creature card in your graveyard has flying. Repeat this process for first strike, double strike, deathtouch, hexproof, indestructible, lifelink, menace, reach, trample and vigilance. Then put a +1/+1 counter on Kathril for each counter put on a creature this way.

Necrosis24 on Using the graveyard as a …

When I first got into edh I didn’t want to discard or sacrifice my permanents, but after changing my Chromium, the Mutable into a Varina, Lich Queen deck I have grown to love messing with my graveyard and am okay with exiling cards permanently as well.

Some of my favorite interactions have come thru using Altar of Dementia with Faith's Reward sacrificing my board to mill out an opponent then bringing it all back for some etb triggers with Binding Mummy or Noxious Ghoul.

Recently built Kathril, Aspect Warper which utilizes self-mill and recurs all my creatures with Odric, Lunarch Marshal each creature is to be feared.

You can lose everything to a Tormod's Crypt or Leyline of the Void but overall having graveyard recursion makes me less worried about protecting my pieces, so I can sometimes make seemingly unfavorable plays that actually benefit me in the long run.

Dread is No Mercy on a body.

Stormtide Leviathan and Blazing Archon simply say "you may not"

Archangel of Tithes and Windborn Muse both have similar effects that make easier to attack someone else, while Michiko Konda, Truth Seeker and Phyrexian Obliterator drive that point home even further.

But if you want the carrot rather than the stick, there's Edric, Spymaster of Trest and Karazikar, the Eye Tyrant to offer up cards for attacking your opponents instead. And related to Karazikar's goading ability Grenzo, Havoc Raiser can help you keep your opponent open if you're going wide, and Marisi, Breaker of the Coil is that same ability but even stronger as you only need to connect with one creatre.

Platinum Angel and Platinum Emperion make attacking you pointless unless you can also deal with them.

Sevinne, the Chronoclasm make an excellent blocker, and both Angus Mackenzie and Lady Evangela offer fog and fog-light effects on your commmander.

Eight-and-a-Half-Tails works similarly to Mother of Runes if you have the mana to pour into it, and Giver of Runes will protect something else in a way similar to mom.

Pairing together first strike with deathtouch is always a good method too, Glissa, the Traitor has this on her own, but it doesn't take much work for Kathril, Aspect Warper to do the same.

This should help some folks be more inclined to help you. I for one have no idea what the name of most of the decks are, it is just the commander(s) that I care about. What I would highly recommend is if you know your general preferred play style let us know and we can start pointing you in one direction or another.

Alright, with an egyptian theme and no blue, the options are a bit narrower. What you need for the egyptian theme to work is white (white zombies are Amonkhet's thing). Zombies also need black, and, for a 3rd color, green is decent for zombies.

Kathril, Aspect Warper looks a bit like a scarab beetle, which could work for theme, but you'd have to get creative with the deck to have it work as a zombie deck (not a bad thing).

Nethroi, Apex of Death might fit the egyptian love of cats, and this definitely works for zombies.

Sidar Kondo of Jamuraa and Tormod, the Desecrator is also a perfectly viable option.

Does Akroma, Vision of Ixidor give Kathril, Aspect Warper +1/+1 for each of his ability counters or not?

thank you for your comments! it's my first commander deck and your ideas are really helpful to make it make focused! I also got something with Kathril, Aspect Warper 's mechanic wrong, so i'm taking out Army of the Damned (i thought you'd create a +1/+1 counter for EACH creature I controll, but ANY apparently means just a single one).

Kathril, Aspect Warper is another fun one. Its in great colors for recovering from disruption, too.

After spending the day on edhrec I did find something interesting.

Akroma, Vision of Ixidor and Kamahl, Heart of Krosa

I’m just not sure which one I like more than the other.

Akroma on one hand seems interesting for a keyword soup deck but I’m not sure with what I should use as a partner and running such a high cmc commander without green to ramp up and double up my mana seems risky. On the other hand Kathril, Aspect Warper would be interesting at the helm of the deck. Distributing plenty of keywords around and then placing akroma on the field is pretty good in my opinion but the guy at the store told me that Kathril was a very weak deck and I wouldn’t do much in a game.

As for Kamahl well in not sure what paring would work for him or even what to do with him. I thought either a bunch of 1-2cmc (human, elves maybe goblin) being pumped all at once with +3/+3 or a bunch of tokens being pumped was a funny idea.
