In honor of Gary Adkison, the Mystical Tutor, 1940-2023

  • One library split into ‘non-creature mana generation’ and ‘everything else’ piles
    • 80 nonland and 120 land cards per 2-4 player pod
    • 43 of each single color, 40 colorless, and 25 gold
    • 9 of each basic (excluding Wastes), 6 of each og dual land, 15 total other nonbasic
  • All players in the pod play using the same library
  • No search cards are included
  • The Deck has all five colors and colorless
  • Highlander except select non-basic lands are included
  • Adheres to vintage banlist, does not have restrictions
  • No cards that interact with the library other than drawing included and scrying
  • Players draw one card from the nonland pile or two cards from the mana-generation pile
    • Draws involving multiple cards can be split between piles (one per nonland, two per land)
  • Players have their own graveyard
  • Players own cards that: they control, are in their hand, or are in their graveyard
    • This includes cards under transient control that were originally played by other players
  • Range of influence is limited to two seats on either side of a player
  • Players start with 20 life
  • Tabletalk is encouraged - It’s meant to be political
  • The deck piles may be split to either end of the table to make drawing more convenient
  • Turn 1
    • Players must form their starting hands by drawing four cards from the mana-generation pile and three cards from the nonland pile
      • This is done starting with the player who won the initial dice roll and proceeds clockwise
    • Players may elect to mulligan only once. All players who elect to mulligan will separate their starting hand into land and nonland piles. Respective piles from each player will be shuffled together and placed on the bottom of the matching pile in The Deck. Players who have mulliganed will then redraw 4 lands and 3 nonlands as before
    • Any number of required mulligans can occur after an elected one if: 1) a player has three of the same land and/or 2) all nonland cards in a players hand have a CMC > 4 as verified by a judge. All required mulligans across players occur in the same way as the elected.
  • Ownership
    • Cards owned by a player are limited to: the graveyard, objects they control, and cards in hand.
      • e.g. if a player 1 has taken control of player 3’s Assault Griffin using Mind Control, Assault Griffin will be exiled if player 1 loses but not if player 3 loses.
    • Cards in the library are not owned by any player
      • Any reference to ‘library’ refers to The Deck (“your”, “owner’s”, “opponent’s”, “a” etc)
    • If a permanent controlled by a player is returned to hand, it goes to the controlling player’s hand regardless of the original caster
      • The same if the card would enter the graveyard
  • Graveyard
    • Each player maintains an individual graveyard
  • Scrying
    • Players may scry from any pile and divide the scry as they choose
  • Range of Influence is 2 seats
    • In a five person pod, any player can affect any other player. In an 8 person pod, a player can affect the 4 closest players, 2 on either side
  • Draw
    • At any time any player can draw a card, that player may choose to draw:
      • One card from the nonland pile
      • Two cards from the mana-generation pile
    • If a player is able to draw multiple cards at once, that player may choose to divide the draw between land and nonland piles
      • E.g. A player plays Cathartic Reunion (draw 3). After discarding, the player can choose to draw either:
        • 6 land cards
        • 4 land cards and a nonland card
        • 2 land and 2 nonland cards
        • 3 nonland cards
    • If multiple players can draw at the same time, they draw in order of priority
    • If either pile (and all of its respective splits) has no cards and a player would draw, the game results in a tie for all players remaining
