Introduction Show

Prototype for a Marisi brew. I am building this to use as an example for an EDH deckbuilding guide I am writing for my playgroup. I picked Marisi since I wanted to have a deck in Naya colors (WRG) for a while now and I feel he provides an interesting design space.

Strategy & gameplan Show

This is a midrange, board-centric deck with a few, mostly creature-based combo finishes.

At 4CMC, the commander is definitely not cheap, usually coming out on Turn 3. He has relevant abilities in all stages of the game, but stalled boards can be problematic - however, if you somehow manage to get through with something, it won't be stalled for long. For a more in-depth analysis of his abilities, see 'Analyzing the Commander', below.

Analyzing the commander Show

Let's start with looking at his second ability. If you connect with a creature, you will goad all the creatures owned by that particular player. That means that during his turn, he will have to attack with those creatures if he is able to and will be sending them to someone else if possible. It also means that unless he puts a new creature down or he has creatures with vigilance, you will be able to connect again next turn. How impactful this ability is depends largely on the decks you're facing. It obviously does nothing against creatureless boardstates. Against creature-light decks, you can likely connect with something and force them to attack with their creatures (or tap them before the combat phase). Against creature-heavy decks, you might have trouble connecting unless your creatures have evasion.

Then for the first ability, which is what caught my eye when selecting the commander. Your opponents cannot cast spells during combat. In an more casual brew, this ability could be used for something like 'combat tricks.dec', where your opponents are unable to respond to your surprise buffs. However, another use case is for protecting your game ending plays. If you can somehow cast them during combat (i.e. at instant speed) when you have Marisi out, your opponents will not be able respond.

2. 507.1. First, if the game being played is a multiplayer game in which the active player’s opponents don’t all automatically become defending players, the active player chooses one of their opponents. That player becomes the defending player. This turn-based action doesn’t use the stack. (See rule 506.2.)

3. 507.2. Second, the active player gets priority. (See rule 117, “Timing and Priority.”)

Implication of this rule is that there is window before the declare attacks step in which you get priority. This means that if you somehow have haste and flash, you can go off uncontested.

Flash & Haste Show

Options for winning the game at instant-speed are limited in Naya colors. If we could give our cards flash, it would open up more possibilities. Thankfully there are some ways we can do this, which I have listed below:

Providing flash:

• Aluren not in main deck A classic combo piece, there are many ways to abuse this card. However, the Naya shard is quite restrictive because it means you lose out on cards like Cavern Harpy. The fact it's not one-sided also makes it very dangerous the play out in your pre-combat main phase.
• Yeva, Nature's Herald not in main deck 4CMC and green creatures only makes it hard to justify
• Vedalken Orrery - not in main deck 4CMC is a lot for a card that does nothing else
• Shimmer Myr - not in main deck Lack of artifact synergy

What stands out is that with he exception of Emergence Zone, most of these are limited to creatures. So a creature-based win condition is preferable.

Providing Haste:

• Kiki provides haste to the tokens
• Rhythm of the Wild
• Samut, Voice of Dissent currently not maindeck (at 5 CMC, this quite expensive, but it does provide global haste, has good stats and a useful activated ability)
• Footfall Crater - currently testing. This can only provide a single creature with haste (and trample), but it's only 1CMC and can be cycled in a pinch.

Kiki-Jiki Show

Effective slots: 3 Kiki-Jiki, Mirror Breaker, Village Bell-Ringer, Felidar Guardian

Kiki-Jiki, Mirror Breaker paired with either Village Bell-Ringer or Felidar Guardian goes infinite.

Note that VBR has flash, so you can cast this in the beginning of combat step and swing with the totems. Hardcasting FG is trickier - you either need to do in your pre-combat main phase or have some way to provide flash.

Note that if you have Goblin Bombardment out, you can ping the table to death.

Birthing Pod Show

Effective slots: 2 Birthing Pod, Karmic Guide (shares Felidar Guardian, Village Bell-Ringer with Kiki combo)

This is somewhat anti-synergistic with Marisi since Birthing Pod cannot be activated during combat.
