EVERYBODY LOVES HYPNOTOAD. EVERYBODY LOVES THE GET #REKT MONSTER!

The moment that The Gitrog Monster was spoiled, I knew that I needed to build a deck around him. Learning that he was actually The Hypnotoad only sealed the deal

This Primer is intended to explain the design decisions and card choices I made when building my deck, in the hopes of spreading His influence and encourage Others to build their own shrine to Our Lord and Master

Why play Hypnotoad?

Why play Hypnotoad? OTHER than the fact that Hypnotoad demands you to play him, and THAT alone should be more than enough?

Hmmm, well let's see

First, this is a Commander that lets you ramp. With the ability to play an extra land each turn, that's a pretty awesome perk. There is a reason ramp is one of the most effective ways to win in this game - in a game of limited resources, They who have more, Win more
Second, the upkeep "drawback" of land Sacrifice draws you an extra card, making it not much of a drawback
Third, not only does Hypnotoad help you ramp, but you also get an insanely efficient card draw engine. With The Gitrog Monster in play, EVERY single land in your deck turns into a potential cantrip. What other commander allows you something like that, where 35-45 cards (lands) in your deck can suddenly draw you other cards? I can't think of one, can you?
Fourth, The Gitrog Monster is a 6/6 general, with Deathtouch, for 5 mana... That's value right there. Not only can you combo out with the deck and the card draw, but he can hop into the red zone and battle things out the old fashioned way if needed. Solid

Card Selection

Lands

Forests and Swamps. Essential to get the most out of your fetches, although you probably don't want more than 20 total

Ancient Tomb: a land for is always good, even at the cost of 2 life

Bayou, Command Tower, Gemstone Mine, Overgrown Tomb, Twilight Mire and Woodland Cemetery: You're playing 2 colours, you need lands that for either or

Blighted Woodland, Bloodstained Mire, Marsh Flats, Misty Rainforest, Polluted Delta, Windswept Heath, Wooded Foothills and Verdant Catacombs: For the cost of only 1 life each (except Blighted Woodland), these lands help in many ways. They help you colour fix when needed, Draw a card with your Commander in play from Sacrifice, and also give you 2 or 3 Landfall triggers. Pure value in this deck

Barren Moor, Slippery Karst and Tranquil Thicket: With our Commander in play, these EDH staples allow you to pay mana, discard them, and draw 2 cards instead of 1! Yes please

Strip Mine and Wasteland: Land destruction is always important to include in any EDH deck, but being able to ALSO draw a card when we do because of our Commander being in play, is even better

Boseiju, Who Shelters All: Since our deck is so focused of getting to our combo and to win, as soon as possible, and our combo uses Instants and Sorceries, why not be sure they will go through. Thanks to this miracle tree, you can be sure (even though our combos are essentially impossible to counter due to clever use of the Stack, and how it works - Why not have a backup?)

Command Beacon: The word is out folks... People know and fear the power of your Lord and Master, and the nefarious ne'er-do-wells like to try to kill him, Luckily, we have Command Beacon to facilitate His glorious return as a reasonable cost. We also have the means to repeat the process as often as is necessary

Tower of the Magistrate: Artifacts are fun when they're yours, not so much when your opponents own them. From giving your creatures protection from a targeted Artifact assault, or creature, to making an opponent's creature unequippable, this land is an all star. I particularly like using this in response to someone trying to equip Lightning Greaves or Swiftfoot Boots to a commander. Swords are annoying, and since Sword of Feast and Famine is one of the most commonly played ones, AND grants protection from our colours, this land is very good to have

Dark Depths + Thespian's Stage = Marit Lage = OH SHIT = gg

Dakmor Salvage + a Sacrifice outlet can win you the game in a few different ways with our Commander in play. See the Combos section for a more in-depth description of these

Bojuka Bog: Nuke a graveyard by playing a land. Repeatable with our Sacrifice outlets and Crucible of Worlds in play, or Life from the Loam in hand.

Buried Ruin: for , or Pay , and Sacrifice to return an artifact from your graveyard to your hand. Fantastic for getting key artifacts back when our opponents kill them. Also great for pulling them out of your graveyard in the event that you flip them there from dredging

Drownyard Temple: for , cool. Pay : Return it to the battlefield from your graveyard tapped. The Gitrog Monster's favourite upkeep snack

Glacial Chasm: A wonderful way to keep you safe while assembling your army or combo. Can't/don't want to pay upkeep? Sacrifice it, draw off Hypnotoad, recur from Crucible. An essential

Scavenger Grounds: Another way to nuke graveyards.

Urborg, Tomb of Yawgmoth: This card is amazing, getting you all the you could ever want from your lands.

Volrath's Stronghold: This Legendary land returns creatures from the graveyard to the top of your library. Very important when certain key creatures need to be back in your hand or library

Creatures

Key to our overall strategy, the Hypnotoad's minions can be classified thusly:

Creatures in this category fall into two subcategories:

Birds of Paradise: The Birds can tap for mana, and also offers the side benefit of a blocker with Flying

Deathrite Shaman: Playable turn 1, this guy is banned in some formats for a reason. Combining graveyard hate with mana production, life gain and drain, he's just an allstar

Lotus Cobra: Takes advantage of the Landfall mechanic to ramp you as you play lands each turn. Completely BONKERS with Splendid Reclamation!!!

Azusa, Lost but Seeking: Play 2 extra lands per turn. That's it. You don't need anything else. Stop being greedy

Oracle of Mul Daya: Play with the top card of your library revealed, with the ability to play revealed lands as though they were in your hand, again is pretty cool. Playing an extra land each turn is even better

Ramunap Excavator: Crucible on legs is a welcome addition to this deck. Why have one chance at this effect when you could have two?

World Shaper: A 3/3 for that dumps 3 cards into the 'Yard when it attacks, and brings all lands into play from your 'Yard when it dies. This is an auto-include!

Dredge is a key mechanic/strategy in this deck, allowing us to dig through our deck quickly, and draw cards off of Hypnotoad, which can become more dredges. These creatures are good in their own right, but really we're running them so they'll die and help you dig for combo pieces, or other things you'd like to recur.

Golgari Grave-Troll: A massive Dredge 6, and a potentially huge body if you need him to enter the red zone or act as sac fodder to Jarrad, Golgari Litch Lord

Golgari Thug: A respectable Dredge 4, our precious thug likes to put juicy critters on top of our library when he dies

Stinkweed Imp: With an impressive Dredge 5 and pseudo-deathtouch, this imp can do a lot of work as a chump blocker that just won't die (for long)

We draw cards when lands hit the graveyard, and so it is important to have as many ways as we can to pitch lands, or other cards we want in the graveyard, to the graveyard

Noose Constrictor: Pitching a card to pump the Choke Snek on demand is great. He can be a beater, a great defense against flyers thanks to Reach, or he can also allow for free discards and instant card draw.

Olivia's Dragoon: Much like the above Choke Snek, being able to pitch a card to pump on demand is great. Can be a better (Flying) beater, great defense against flyers, or can also allow for free discards and instant card draw.

Putrid Imp: This guy is here simply as a on demand discard outlet. Granting him flying so he can block in the early game (before Threshold activates), is just a bonus

Skirge Familiar: This is a KEY combo piece. Discard a card, make a . With Dakmor Salvage and The Gitrog Monster in play, you can discard Dakmor for mana, Dredge 2 instead of drawing from Hypnotoad's trigger, and then draw a card if a land is dredged into the graveyard. Repeat ad nauseam for infinite , and draw your entire deck, recycling every time Kozilek, Butcher of Truth hits the graveyard. You'll close out the game with a huge Torment of Hailfire or Exsanguinate

Sylvan Safekeeper: Sacrifice a land, grant Shroud to a creature, and draw a card when Hypnotoad is in play is all-win

Wild Mongrel: Pitch a card to pump and change colour on demand is great. Can be a beater, but can also allow for free discards and instant card draw

These are all creatures that are just potentially huge and threatening. Excellent if plan A of comboing off is thwarted

Centaur Vinecrasher: Hmmm a creature that comes into play with +1/+1 counters equal to the number of lands in all graveyards? Awesome! The ability to be returned to your hand for whenever a land hits your graveyard? Whoa, what?!? Yes, yes please! Trample is the icing on the cake here

Kozilek, Butcher of Truth: 12/12 for , with Annihilator 4, AND draw 4 upon being cast? What's not to love? Most of the time Sir Kozi will just hang out in your library as a combo enabler, strictly for his graveyard reshuffling ability. He's pure win, no matter which way you look at him

With so many lands entering and leaving the battlefield everything, it's good to capitalize on it. Landfall effects just got a major boost from Splendid Reclamation and I am working a bit more of this effect into the deck because of it

Lotus Cobra: Makes you mana with its Landfall trigger, every time you play a land, ramping you quickly

These cards make a splash and solve problems when they arrive

Eternal Witness: Regrowth on legs, EDH staple, need I say more?

Kozilek, Butcher of Truth: As stated before, if you choose to cast this Eldrazi Titan, he makes a huge splash!

Reclamation Sage: Destroy an artifact or enchantment when it ETBs makes this an EDH staple

Riftsweeper: A 2/2 elf that returns an exiled face-up card to our graveyard. Very important in case one of our combo pieces gets exiled. Repeatable with our various creature recursion tools

Here are you other creatures that offer either excellent synergy with the deck, or enable combos

Doom Whisperer: This newly printed-pretty is too amazing to pass up trying. Everything about this card screams synergy with what we want to be doing to win; whether finding your combo-piece, or just being a big flying threat

Jarad, Golgari Lich Lord: This badass Elf-Lich can not only come back over and over by sacrificing lands (oh noes!), but he also allows you to close out the game with your huge creatures, even from behind something like Glacial Chasm. His favourite Sacrifice fodder being Centaur Vinecrasher

Kozilek, Butcher of Truth: As mentioned before, Kozilek is here mostly as a way to infinitely reshuffle your graveyard into your library, to enable combos

Necrotic Ooze: A true artist who knows that imitation is the sincerest form of flattery, this guy gets all the activated abilities of an creatures in your graveyard. He can be a really stealthy way to combo off if your opponents aren't paying close enough attention to what you have in your graveyard, since people tend to forget all your combos and interactions. With cards like Jarad, Golgari Lich Lord(dredged?) in the graveyard, he can single-handedly (do Oozes have hands?) win the game. Call him Mr. Goodstuff

Ulamog, the Infinite Gyre: Much like it's twin Titan, Kozilek, Ulamog is here for redundancy when it comes to our combo shenanigans. Worst case, it's a huge beater that can get rid of something when it ETBs

Artifacts

Our strategy doesn't rely too heavily on artifacts, but those it does use are important and can be classified thusly:

Mana Crypt: A free Sol Ring that may or may not bolt us on upkeep. The upside is too great to not run this

Mox Diamond: Another free mana rock that taps for coloured mana, and makes you pitch a land. Worst case, the pitch isn't a big deal. Best case, Hypnotoad is in play, and it draws you a card

Sol Ring: It's Sol Ring, 'nuff said

Crucible of Worlds: This handy little tool allows us to utilize lands in our graveyard, because why should Hypnotoad play by the rules and only use fetchlands once, or not have access to things you pitched or accidentally dredged away?

Horn of Greed: In case all the things our deck does wasn't broken enough, this lets us draw a card every time we play a land, refilling our hand faster, and helping us string shenanigans together into longer chains

Lightning Greaves: Grants a creature Haste and Shroud. Good for protecting important creatures like The Gitrog Monster, Azusa, Lost but Seeking or Skirge Familiar

Swiftfoot Boots: The same as above, but Hexproof instead of Shroud

Birthing Pod: I don't need to go into too much detail explaining why Pod is so good, whole decks were named after it... What I will say is that our strategy is creature dependant, and Pod makes it easier to find exactly what we need

Sorceries

All the sorceries that we play are here to either gain the advantage, press the advantage, protect our interests or to close out the game. They are as follow:

Buried Alive: Search up 3 dredgers, or whichever creature threat you need, then dump it straight into the bin for easy access. This is an excellent way to get things rolling or even closer to finished

Demonic Tutor: The Grandpappy of all tutors, good old Dee Toots is still the undisputed champion of them all. You'd be crazy NOT to run it

Diabolic Intent: One of the best tutors ever printed, Black often wants to see a creature die. This deck has no shortage of creatures, and being able to Sacrifice a dredger and start our engine, or a Vinecrasher Centaur to bring it back bigger-and-badder, is awesome. There is literally no down side to this card

Imperial Seal: Being we have so many ways to draw on demand by pitching or sacrificing lands, much like it's speedier cousin Vampiric Tutor, Imperial Seal can effectively be as good as almost any other tutor, grabbing you whatever you need, for the mere pittance of 2 life. Being that this card isn't cheap to buy, Diabolic Tutor is my budget choice here

Life from the Loam: Life from the Loam is the undisputed champion of this deck. This spell is a single-card engine. Those who have played it, know it. Those who haven't, will soon. Life from the Loam brings back your Sacrificed and discarded lands, and also fills up your graveyard with all the juicy cards you want through Dredge 3

Seasons Past: Bringing back multiple cards revealed through dredging is pretty sweet. This card seems good, and I am adding it to test out

Splendid Reclamation: Ok, so if all the land we are pitching into the graveyard and all the cards we draw from Hypno wasn't enough, along comes Nissa with her Splendid Peclamation. For , you bring every land card in your graveyard, back into play tapped... Yes. EVERY. You read that right. This card needs testing, but really has the potential to be BONKERS in this deck, ESPECIALLY with Landfall. Let's see, shall we?

Maelstrom Pulse: An extremely versatile removal spell, Maelstrom Pulse can remove all copies of any non-land permanent which offends the Almighty Hypnotoad, be they Sol Ring, Rest in Peace, or a token army. Too good to pass up

Damnation: Sometimes death and destruction need to be efficient, simple and cheap. No other black removal spell hits all these notes as well as everyone's favourite colour-shifted Wrath of God... Damnation is the real deal

Raven's Crime: Paying to have target player discard a card of their choice isn't really THE best discard spell ever printed, but when you add in the Retrace mechanic, it becomes so, so much better. We have tons of lands in hand, and Dakmor Salvage + Raven's Crime , especially with Hypnotoad in play, can strip every card, from every opponent's hand... A fantastic thing to do before comboing off

Exsanguinate: Our goal is to assemble the Exsanguinate combo (described in the Combo section) to close out the game. In a pinch, this spell can also be used to keep you alive, since we do run many things that eat away slowly at our life total

Torment of Hailfire: This is a reasonable replacement for Exsanguinate in the above combo, and another great way to close out the game, or cripple our Opponents' boardstates trying.

Instants

Much like our sorceries, instants that we play are here to either gain the advantage, protect our interests or to close out the game. They are as follow:

Crop Rotation: The Almighty Hypnotoad is always hungry and never satisfied. Sometimes HE demands a menu item that we don't have on hand. Crop Rotation is just the spell we need to instantly find just the right thing, whenever we need it. Hypnotoad rewards us with a card draw for our efforts

Entomb: A fantastic way to put anything into our graveyard at the blink of an eye. No matter what you need, Entomb is your best option. Attacking and don't want to be blocked? A great way to get access to any of your Dredge card early on too

Insidious Dreams: For the cost of 3 and discarding X cards, you get to search for X cards and put them on top of your library in order (after shuffling). Since Hypnotoad likes to see us pitch lands, this can be a great way to set up an explosive turn (if cast at the end of our opponents' turn. Worst case scenario, it's a Tutor for X. Best case scenario, it's a Win Con enabler

Realms Uncharted: Essentially a Gifts Ungiven for lands, there is almost no way you go wrong with this spell. Good choices are Dakmor Slavage, Bojuka Bog, Urborg, Tomb of Yawgmoth, Glacial Chasm or any of our Cycling lands

Vampiric Tutor: Being we have so many ways to draw on demand by pitching or sacrificing lands, Vampiric Tutor can effectively be an instant-speed tutor, grabbing you whatever you need, for the mere pittance of 2 life

Assassin's Trophy: An extremely efficient, instant-speed way to exile a permanent an opponent controls, for the mere annoyance of giving them a basic land instead. Simply good, good stuff

Darkblast: At worst, this is a reusable spell to get rid of small utility creatures like mana dorks etc. As a Dredge 3 card, it advances our plans by putting good stuff into our graveyard and keeps coming back. The best part is that because we can draw, and thus Dredge almost on demand, Darkblast can take down creatures larger than just simple guys with 1 toughness. Heck, you can even cast it during upkeep, then get it back by using Dredge on your draw step to get right of 2 toughness guys. This is just a really useful spell

Constant Mists: Fog spells are great, and Constant Mists is no exception. The fact that you can use Buyback to return it by sacrificing a land, which of course draws you a card through our commander, is even better

Krosan Grip: Sometimes you just have to kill an annoying artifact or enchantment. What makes Krosan Grip a sensation is Split Second, keeping it safe from almost ANY kind of disruption

Enchantments

We don't run too many enchantments, but those we do run are excellent, and important

Burgeoning: Since we draw lots of cards, this allows us to ramp quickly and play our extra lands whenever an opponent plays one. It's definitely broken in multiplayer, and thus must be played in our deck

Exploration: Allows you to play an extra land on each of your turns. You ramp out faster than your opponents, and build your buffet for Hypnotoad

Faith of the Devoted: New addition to the deck on the suggestion of some of you. I'll have to test it out to see if it performs well

Squandered Resources: An old school enchantment that allows your to Sacrifice a land to add 1 mana of any colour that land could produce to your mana pool. In the past, it was really just something you'd use as a last resort to get that little bit of extra mana to close out a match, but it never really had a great use in EDH. Enter The Gitrog Monster, and suddenly it allows you to make mana and draw a card on demand. Squandered Resources finally found its "Forever Home"

Survival of the Fittest: So strong it's banned in Legacy, Survival of the Fittest is a reusable tool that allows us to Discard a suboptimal creature to tutor up another one which we prefer. Thanks to Matrixxx999 and Catgroove for pushing me to add this. It's superior to the Traverse the Ulvenwald that I cut to make room for it

Planeswalkers

Nissa, Vital Force: Finally, we have a Planeswalker seemingly designed for this deck. Although all her abilities are relevant, mre often than not you'll want to +1 her, and then get her one-sided Horn of Greed emblem the next turn. Cast her when you can protect her, but having a land lay down its life for her defense is not a bad thing either.

Garruk Wildspeaker, Liliana of the Veil and Liliana, the Last Hope are worthy considerations and have been tested.I just tried out Liliana, the Last Hope and she was ok, but I found I really just wanted her "mill 2, recoup a critter" effect.

Playing the Deck

This is the section of the primer which is most likely to develop and change over time as I play the deck and learn more about how to get the very best out of it. For now, what you see are my impressions and advice to date

Mulligans

Your selection of an opening hand is really important, and can make a huge difference in terms of how quickly you can expect to build up momentum. Currently, when I draw my initial 7 cards, I'm looking for 2-3 lands, preferably with the ability to generate both or mana, preferably with both colours represented. In the event that you draw a hand that is excellent otherwise, be sure that you at least have something that you can play turn 1 other than a land

Aside from lands, I usually like to see at least 1 mana accelerator, 1 Dredge card, and then the rest is mostly less important. Our goal is really to be able to start dredging ASAP, and to also get Hypnotoad on the field as early as we can

Early Game

In the first few turns, you want to start building out your mana base and preparing for HIS coming. It's often very tempting to cast Hypnotoad as soon as we can, but it can sometimes be the wrong play. If you do have the ability to cast HIM early, make sure you have a few lands still in hand. The worst thing you can do is end up having to Sacrifice lands and whiffing on our draws, leaving us behind our opponents with nothing to show for it. Other focuses are simply coming up with a game plan based on what we have, and what we see opposing us... Figuring out how best to move forward. Do you get straight to assembling your combo pieces and ploughing towards comboing off ASAP, or is that too risky due to a large amount of in the Meta? Is overwhelming forces of fat tramplers going to be our avenue to a win instead? Whatever you choose, be ready to change your direction on a moment's notice

Mid Game

By now you should have your Dredge engine up and running, tossing key cards into your yard for recycling. It's always vital to get your hands on Life from the Loam specifically, as nothing accelerates your plans better. Whether you plan on comboing out, or winning through a stampede of angry creatures, be sure to always keep your dredgers in hand whenever possible, so that they do not get nuked by graveyard hate. If they are staying in your graveyard, be sure to have a way to draw at instant speed in case someone does try to make a move against them

Late Game

In truth, the "Late Game" with this deck shouldn't be in the double digits in terms of turns, sometimes as early as turn 4-5. This is when you will likely be ready to strike. Remember, no matter what your strategy may be, leave enough mana available to you to defend yourself against the unexpected. Leave that open for Constant Mists. Have a way to draw on demand and restart your dredging if necessary. Then, and ONLY then should you feel comfortable going in for the Coup de Grâce to finish it all

Weaknesses

Graveyard hate is probably our biggest weakness, and even so, you CAN work through it so long as you don't get caught flat-footed with all your key stuff in the graveyard at one time. Important Dredge cards shouldn't be left to lie fallow... Always try to keep them in your hand when possible. Remembering to leave a discard or Sacrifice outlet available at all times is important... A well timed land going to the graveyard can snatch all your good stuff back to your hand, saving it from a nuked graveyard

Be wary of a meta that is too heavy, and play with more caution if you feel that there is a large threat of your cards being exiled. Riftsweeper CAN bring exiled cards back to you, but you are far better off trying not to leave anything more than what is essential open to threats

As the reputation of The Gitrog Monster grows, I have little doubt that we will be considered a "kill-on-sight" general, much like Narset, Mizzix or Arcum. While HE finds this flattering, always remember to keep your play tight and not to give your opponents any openings that they haven't fought for

Combos

Dakmor Salvage + Skirge Familiar = Infinite mana. Use this to Dredge through your deck, reshuffling your graveyard into your library whenever Kozilek, Butcher of Truth hits your graveyard. Use any draw triggers from lands other than Dakmor Salvage hitting the graveyard to draw cards, discarding any lands for more and a new card. Continue until you have drawn Exsanguinate, then win the game.

This combo has been mathematically proven to work 100% of the time if left uninterrupted, as posted here: Proof of Determinacy for The Gitrog Monster Combo

Centaur Vinecrasher + Jarad, Golgari Lich Lord

Any of these, or any other huge creature can be Sacrificed to Jarad for a massive amount of hurt to your opponents. Depending how big your stuff is, it could be enough to close out the game.

PLEASE NOTE: If one of your other combo piece-creatures are in your graveyard, but you have Necrotic Ooze in play, you can just substitute the Ooze in that card's place. As mentioned above, Necrotic Ooze can win the game on its own if Jarad, Golgari Lich Lord, is in the graveyard
