Faith of the Devoted Discussion

can't see running more than 1 mirror, so I could try slotting it in. I was also thinking of 2x Treasure Map  Flip. it doesn't combo with anything, but it would help set up draws and give an early play, while providing a burst of extra mana when it's time to drain. Any time that Faith of the Devoted can't be fully used because of not enough mana is really painful.

Basically I feel oil + faith is strong enough on it's own and adding cards to try to upgrade the combo are just jankifying it by making the deck less consistent as a 3 card combo deck, with extra pieces that aren't as good on their own. Bomat Courier isn't an extra piece, its literally an extra set of Midnight Oils, increasing the consistency of the deck by allowing you to win with just courier + Faith of the Devoted (also it's just an amazing card on it's own and works with oil as well, so it doesn't ever feel dead).

Not sure. Though going T3 Solemnity into T4 Midnight Oil doesn't seem that good to me even if it works. There would already have to be a Faith of the Devoted on the field to start taking advantage of oil, otherwise anytime we are discarding our whole hand for nothing there isn't much advantage, even if we draw into and cast a Ghirapur Orrery it still wont draw cards until the next turn... Thats turns 3-4-5 used up. not to mention faith and oil are really good in multiples but Solemnity is not. In my experience T3 use a control spell, T4 cast an oil, T5 control spell and cast faith, then T6 your racing w.e they got left vs your drain game is all you need.

Tried out voice, honestly I don't need it really, sense if I ever have a card I don't want in hand I just toss it to bomat or oil at some point, and I think top decking burn/removal late game is so much better than voice (gotta control the board). I also cant sit well playing such an easy 2 for 1 in a format full of negates and spell pierces. Finally, i feel it just doesn't do very much even with Faith of the Devoted out. Cathartic has potential, as a way to burn for 4, but oil only draws 1 extra card a turn and I can def see myself drawing cathartic + land and not being able to cast the reunion.
But Ill have to check it out;
6 mana available 3 cards in hand, 1 of them is a reunion, faith out on the field. Cast cathartic and drain for 4/ gain 4, get 3 new cards 2 mana left for lightning strike? hit them for 7. not bad if they are low. really needs Fiery Temper though :/

Hi there! I worked on a very similar build before the Commander 2017 Series, and I have a few tips.

this Olivia is stronger as a Timmy Aggro general, so you want to have some brutally efficient early game, rather than cards like Dark Impostor, which are high value but very slow. Also, it would be much better for you to add vampires and vampire synergy, rather than Madness cards, as they are less efficient. Here are my recommendations

CUT: Archfiend of Ifnir, Dark Impostor, Insatiable Gorgers, Drana, Kalastria Bloodchief, Stromkirk Occultist. Vampire Cutthroat, Voldaren Pariah  Flip, Faith of the Devoted, Gibbering Descent, Fiery Temper, Alms of the Vein, Gisa's Bidding, From Under the Floorboards, Blood Tribute, Cultivator's Caravan, Hedron Archive

ADD: Vampire Nocturnus, Bloodline Keeper  Flip, Captivating Vampire, Olivia Voldaren, Purphoros, God of the Forge, Smuggler's Copter, Lightning Bolt, Mogis, God of Slaughter, Living Death, Kalitas, Traitor of Ghet, Coat of Arms, Phyrexian Arena, Outpost Siege, Living Death.

I too have a remarkably similar deck but the proportions are very different. Check it out if you'd like, I've been playing it for months and it is refreshingly good as it takes mono-black back to basics with a simple discard/control theme. The cool thing about newer cards is that you pretty much always get an explosive finish instead of a slow painful death that takes dozens of turns that pretty much just go "draw, pass...". Torment of Hailfire and Scarabs make quick work and two of my favorite black cards in standard :)

Here's the deck if you are interested:

I like your use of Midnight Oil for card advantage. I've recently started building around it and found that it is actually really sweet with Faith of the Devoted if you have a good draw engine to maximize the size of your hand once Oil runs out of counters. Something to think about, good luck!

aleister23, to be honest, I have not played this deck yet, but I will be getting the cards for it sometime this week. I will let you know how it plays. There might be some tweaks to the deck list depending on how it performs (see "Maybe" list).

In the aggro match-up, I expect this deck's fliers to pose a threat while Ruthless Sniper/Archfiend of Ifnir will kill most of their small creatures. Faith of the Devoted can potentially sway the game in my favor as I gain life and drain my opponent. Also, Drake Haven is a source of evasive creatures if I need to rebuild my board state.

Regarding Fatal Push, I would like to keep the deck as budget as possible which is also why I have not included Fetid Pools.

Hey, thanks! I've been playing the deck at my local game store the past couple of months now, and I've had a lot of fun with it. I'm a compulsive tinkerer however, so my paper version of this deck is now just B/W. A card not listed in the Maybeboard - though probably should be - is Faith of the Devoted (there's a decent amount of cycling already in the deck, and this card is great against control if you can get it resolved). Thanks again!
