Faith of the Devoted Discussion

MonochromeDisco on Cycling Deck - Suggestions Welcome

This looks great! I was hashing out a U/B cycling deck earlier but I hadn't thought of using Ramunap Excavator and the new cycling deserts.

Maybe you could drop some creatures for Faith of the Devoted just to get another enchantment to put down if you dont draw Drake Haven?

I see two possibilities here.

numero uno

First, you could go for some cheap removal, to help your friend establish board dominance. Geth's Verdict which additionally causes 1 damage or Tragic Slip that removes everything with morbid.
And then there's more cards to use Soul Spike with.

Have you thought about using Leechridden Swamp? You would require some boardpresence though. Perhaps Faith of the Devoted could help establish that presence and boost the cycling.
Retreat to Hagra might also be of interest.
Then there's Grim Guardian.
And Bloodchief Ascension could also be funny.Especially in round one after drawing Chancelor. And again, there's more cards to use Soul Spike with.

Skirge Familiar + Faith of the Devoted + Archfiend of Ifnir to end the game.

And commander is the only format I play, so if you ever need a reference to any decks then you could check my decks out if you want!

Have you tried turning it into a cycle deck with New Perspectives and Faith of the Devoted? If piloted correctly, I've seen it win on turn 4. There are ways you can keep creating mana and cycling for free until you can cast approach twice in the same turn.

clayperce, Argy, I do have to admit that Eternalize is lame mechanically, as far as warranting a whole new keyword and a big block of rules text right after Embalm. But I don't think it's a fail from a design point, just the contrary.

For one, the flavor of Eternalize coming after Embalm is ON POINT. So, Embalm took failed initiates and turned them into W Zombies to preserve the culture of Amonkhet. The twisted part was that those Anointed were really just hastening Bolas's return. So, now that Bolas is back, his chosen become postmortem Eternalized -- BUT rather than serving Amonkhet, they only serve Bolas and oppress those they would have protected before the Hours (which is represented by a B zombie instead!). Like, Djeru is going to be super disappointed when somebody dies and he realizes that they just get transformed into grisly Bolas henchmen.

Second, I think Eternalize is a cool mechanic because it builds on the sense of cognitive dissonance that has been prevalent in this set. Glorious End depicted an initiate dying; Angel of Sanctions was a boy angel; Faith of the Devoted drains people's life. Embalm, though, seemed innocuous enough at first. Eternalize, by contrast, takes the veil off Embalm -- now that the dead show their true purpose, Eternalize shows mechanically and flavorfully that our sense of dissonance was right on point all along.

But maybe that's just me being a stubborn optimist(: I want to like Eternalize...I just hope it plays well.

In other news, has everybody seen that dope brick counter card?? Now that is a cool use of a prior mechanic on all counts.

Ohthenoises for sure.

Right now Faith of the Devoted has been the best new includes, along with being a swift way to win for my Gitrog Deck. You're paying the by discarding Dakmor to Skirge.

You control playing, Bolas worshipping, grixis loving, megadeth quoting sum'bitch. I've been lookin' at this deck for awhile, and I'm extremely excited to enter into the control field as a minion to our lord and savior, Nicol Bolas. This list has been an invaluable resource to utilize as a competitive grixis standard deck, especially with your detailed explanations and statistics. I'm hoping to include some funkier, more casual stuff, like Insult. The dream was to create a deck that comboes Shadow of the Grave with cycling and stuff like Chandra, Flamecaller, Collective Defiance, Fateful Showdown, Cathartic Reunion to draw boats of cards at once, and run graveyard and discard synergies, such as Faith of the Devoted or something like Rise from the Tides. I thought about Brain in a Jar to make discard spells instant, but the whole thing feels a little janky. Any ideas?

Thanks, and HAIL BOLAS
