Commander deck with an Artifact theme.

Key Ideas

  1. Draw.

  2. Ramp using Artifacts.

  3. Counter spells.

  4. Buffs and assists for Artifacts.

  5. Ways to tutor / cheat Artifacts on to the field.

  6. Direct damage from Creatures who ETB and LTB.

  7. Ways to return Artifacts from the grave or stop them dying.

  8. Unblockable and Indestructible cards, or ways to achieve these.

  9. Spells to clear Opponent attackers off the field, tax them when attacking, or force less Creatures to attack me.

If I get the money I will add a Volcanic Island .

Win Cons

  1. Overwhelm with Thopters.

  2. Large Unblockable Creatures.

  3. ETB and LTB damage.

  4. Blow Artifacts up to deal direct damage.

  5. Infinite combos

Infinite Combos

  1. Paint Pili-Pala with Grand Architect then repeatedly use Grand Architect to tap Pili-Pal, creating , pay the to untap Pili-Pala, and get 1 mana of any colour in your mana pool.

  2. Have Ashnod's Altar and Nim Deathmantle on the field. Play either Pia and Kiran Nalaar (preferred for their direct damage option) or Whirler Rogue. Sac one Thopter and the Creature that produced the Thopter. This creates . Return the Creature to the field by paying the you have produced, to activate Nim Deathmantle. Two Thopters will also enter the field. In this way you can make infinite Thopters. If you sac both Thopters you can make an extra , giving you infinite mana. Of course you can also do both of these things.

This deck works as it's supposed to, quietly building up its arsenal, chipping away with damage, then sneaking in to win the game.

Tonight I was in an Artefact-heavy pod with three other people.

I forget what one of the Commanders was, but the two I remember were Breya, Etherium Shaper and Mizzix of the Izmagnus (being played by the only Non-Artefact player).

I basically got hit all the time, unless there was someone else the pod was more worried about.

I was able to hit whoever I wanted to for 2 Unblockable damage with Jori En, Ruin Diver who had Whispersilk Cloak attached.

StuBi (the Mizzix Player) was able to knock out the Breya Player by hitting her with Creatures for 18 Unblockabke damage (2x Stormtide Leviathan and a Whirler Rogue targetted by its own ability).

The turn swung around the table.

When it got back to StuBi he was able to do 4 direct damage to the other Player and all his Creatures with Bonfire of the Damned , and then 4 again to him and his Creatures by copying Bonfire of the Damned with Reiterate. That player was now on 4 life.

The other Player Emblemed Chandra, Torch of Defiance, then played two spells in quick succession to trigger the Emblem. He targetted StuBi with the Emblem damage from both of those spells, dropping StuBi from 7 to 0 health.

At the end of his turn I activated Sensei's Divining Top to draw Sword of the Animist.

I then drew for turn, played Sword of the Animist, and attached it to Jori En, Ruin Diver.

She was being pumped up +1/+1 by Grand Architect and had Whispersilk Cloak attached to her.

Equipping her with the Sword of the Animist meant that she was now a 4/5 Unblockable Creature, so I hit the remaining Player with her for game.

Yay for Jori En!!


This deck works in that it builds slowly, so people don't see it as an important threat to control.

The constant draw from Jori En isn't really noticed that much because it is only one extra draw per turn, every now and then.

The constant draw means that your hand usually has a few options in it.

By the time your Creatures are Unblockable and you are starting to Ramp, usually other Players have taken a beating.

Then you just swoop in and finish them off, usually with Unblockabke damage.

I think if I play it too much people will start to realise that it wins a lot, and I will be an early target.

At the moment I think that its wins are seen as just good luck.

Don't know HOW ON EARTH I forgot Eager Construct.

Did you notice that in the Kaladesh Pro Tour they had giant Eager Constructs in the main hall?

Wizards is subliminally weaving Eager Construct into all of our lives.

I never thought of Jori En, Ruin Diver as an artifact commander. Izzet definitely needs a Legendary to interact with artifacts, Jori doesn't do that, but he draws them.

I see you have a handful of thopter producers, but no Hangarback Walker. Pretty useful, and when it dies it explodes into thopters.

Also, if you don't mind upgrading, Stoic Rebuttal is a cheap alternative to any other counterspell. Also, many other metalcraft cards are really nice, like Kuldotha Phoenix or Concussive Bolt!

Sideboard looks good, I suggest a few more colorless lands, don't want that sideboard to go to waste.

Either way, I was Eager to see how you Constructed this deck.

Nim Deathmantle and Ashnod's Altar along with either Whirler Rogue or Pia and Kiran Nalaar gives you infinite Thopters and/or colorless mana. Mirrorworks and Prototype Portal can be fun. The portal can be abused with Unwinding Clock, Clock of Omens, and/or Dross Scorpion. You can Imprint Great Furnace or Seat of the Synod and produce lands for . A land during each opponents turns with Unwinding Clock.

I see you have Grand Architect but no Pili-Pala? I don't see Daretti, Scrap Savant as well.

Reckless Fireweaver, Impact Tremors, and/or Purphoros, God of the Forge could wipe out all of your opponent's. Not really artifact themed though.

you can drop 3 lands artifact decks do fine with light land counts given the number of rocks they usually have. Trespassing Souleater doesnt feel worthwhile to me, you have some pump but not enough for this to be a consistent threat. Fleetfeather Sandals you have plenty of flight, this feels like another underwhelming card. Metallurgic Summonings with only 8 targets i feel like this can easily be a dead card. Spellbook is nice if you regularly end turns with 8+ cards in hand but if you dont drop it. Ensoul Artifact makes a non creature vulnerable to -X/-X effects, worthwhile if you do something crazy with it otherwise you have 27 creatures already. those are my recommendations for what to drop. hope it helps.

if you are going all in on a token based win con, why not consider Eldrazi Monument and Akroma's Memorial? Also Feldon of the Third Path seems absurd in a deck that wants to win with Thopters, since he allows you to reuse ETB triggers, as does Panharmonicon.

As for cuts some the worst cards in the board are: Archetype of Imagination, Trespassing Souleater, Al-abara's Carpet, Darksteel Reactor, Trailblazer's Boots, Metallurgic Summonings.

This deck feels a little diluted with the raw quantity of pillowfort cards that are included, and I would definitely reduce the number of defensive spells that are included, you are clearly wanting to be aggressive, and ways to refuel your hand would arguably be better than card filtering or cantripping, and ways to get through damage should have some importance over hiding behind a fort of pillows.

Just my two cents, good luck with tuning this deck to the way you like it!

First of all I find it funny that you need to playtest Tolarian Academy, it's one of the most powerful cards in magic, secondly, I believe it's banned in commander.

Maybe you were joking.

Simon_Williamson this is where my inexperience with Commander shows. I did not know that card was banned.

I am kind of glad that it is. I didn't really want to take out one of my basic Lands, as they are great as Sword of the Animist targets.

I love the fact that your deck can fly under the radar. But yeah, once folks figure out that Sexxy Shellz Fan Grrrl is actually BA, it may be in for a rough ride. Still, the deck's considerable Draw power and Counterspells will go a long way towards holding folks off. So, how to best survive the early game ... Maybe some pillow-fort cards (i.e., stuff like Propaganda), to help reinforce the idea that your opponents should attack each other instead of you? Or maybe Bounce cards, so their Creatures get bounced any time they attack you?

I think I'd do these for sure:

  • Reducing Commander tax, once people find out how dangerous Jori is: Riptide Laboratory, Command Beacon
  • Cryptic Command (just because it does EVERYTHING ... sure, it's kinda pricey, but it's a great investment, as it'll likely go in every Blue deck you ever build)

And you might want to sprinkle these in as the pressure ramps up (I would not recommend all of them by any means ... maybe just pick-and-choose based on cards that fit on curve?):
