Volcanic Geyser Discussion

piejdav on Golos, 5 Color Spellslinger

Zada, Hedron Grinder is a major upgrade from Beamsplitter Mage for 2 more mana

Temur Sabertooth is a repeatable Deputy of Acquittals for 2 more mana

I would switch out Neutralize for something more cost-effective (you'll probably never want to discard it). Consider Counterspell or Arcane Denial

Volcanic Geyser is good, Fall of the Titans is better.

Check out Sea Gate Restoration  Flip and Praetor's Counsel

Another good thing to keep in mind is that Golos' activated ability does not bode well for spells with (X) in their mana costs, because X will always be 0 because you have to cast it "without paying it's mana cost"

Hey, thanks for the additional info.

For causal upgrades my advice is add cards that give you repeatable value; either draw, artifact tokens or pump for tokens. Cards in the original precon to consider adding:

Other changes to consider:

Brudiclad, Telchor Engineer is a strong casual card with artifacts. It creates a Myr at your combat step then all token creatures you control can become any token creature you control. You can make all Thopters/Servos into Myrs for a huge Myr Battlesphere attack or make all Myrs/Servos into Thopters for a big flying army attack with Sharding Sphinx to double your army after combat damage.

Temple of the False God is not a good land for your deck because you can't tap it to make mana until your fifth turn at the earliest. It's not worth playing because of this and honestly it's not worth playing in any deck, but that's another discussion.

Sin Prodder can be repeatable draw, but more times than not an opponent will take the damage and have you put the card into your graveyard which is not helping you. Steel Overseer has great interaction with artifact tokens especially Thopters. It also has good interaction with Unwinding Clock letting you on everyone's turn put a counter on all your artifact tokens.

For control you've added three very good counterspells (Counterspell, Swan Song and Negate). Broken Concentration and Silumgar's Scorn don't compare to these other counterspells, that's why you should consider cutting them. Stoic Rebuttal because of the artifact theme activating metalcraft is good enough to add. Instead of more control, focus on your artifact game plan with Saheeli?

Hey, good upgrades of the precon. Interesting version with lots of creatures. I've been playing Kalamax on a budget since he was released and I personally prefer less creatures and more instants/sorceries. My version is very different than yours, but I have some suggestions of how you can improve your version.

Cards from the precon to consider adding:

Kessig Wolf Run is one of the better support lands with Kalamax since it can a repeatable source of trample. Getting both Run and Encampment or Settlement with Crop Rotation is nice. Run is a land upgrade for Sapseep Forest. Harrow is one of the better land ramp spells with Kalamax because you sac one land to search for four basic lands of your choice and put them onto the battlefield untapped. Getting the basic lands untapped gives you mana to cast a spell on an opponent's turn and that's really the strength of Kalamax. Harrow is better than Natural Connection.

Primal Empathy is a fine repeatable draw source since Kalamax is going to most likely be the biggest creature on the battlefield and if he isn't then put another counter on him to make him bigger. The three Bounce lands are good budget lands that are upgrades for Guildgates and Life lands (Rugged Highlands).

Some cards to consider adding:

Narset's Reversal is powerful with Kalamax since it can be a repeatable instant. You can return the original Reversal back to your hand with the copy of Reversal that Kalamax makes and still get a copy of opponent's or your own instant/sorcery you first copied. The repeatable interaction is nice with Guttersnipe and other creatures who ping your opponents. Reversal could replace Volcanic Geyser.

Shared Summons is an instant creature tutor that can get any two different creatures. With Kalamax it can tutor for four different creatures. Summons could replace Whiplash Trap. Wavebreak Hippocamp could replace Lunar Mystic. It's one less mana and the draw is repeatable for no mana cost. Sprite Dragon is a upgrade for Spellgorger Weird. It's one less mana and has evasion flying to take more advantage of having a lot of counters.

Paradise Druid can tap to make any color of mana and can use this mana to cast any card. Paradise is a ramp upgrade for Vodalian Arcanist. Cultivator's Caravan is an upgrade for a three drop mana rock because of crew 3 which is a repeatable way at instant speed tap Kalamax.

Good luck with your deck.

Dahvienn, Herald of Paradise

Legendary Creature - Bird Warrior

Flying, haste

At the beginning of your upkeep, you may search your library for a card named Birds of Paradise and put it onto the battlefield. If you do, shuffle your library.

At the beginning of your upkeep, if you control a creature named Birds of Paradise (that did not enter the battlefield this turn), until the end of your turn, lands you tap for mana produce one extra mana of a color they could produce.

3 / 1

Just what gruul needed... more ramp. Does this get busted in Standard or Modern? I am not sure. But it is still epic for your sick broken commander combos... you just have to figure out how to protect it when your opponents see it coming.

Notice that both "at beginning of upkeep" triggers won't happen at the same time, so this is a thing that you have to protect over a couple of turns. Hopefully by then you have a few extra lands and can make the most of its effect, with like a Volcanic Geyser or something ... if you can protect it.

Banefire is near-strictly better than Volcanic Geyser , mainly due to the uncounterable clause. Sorcery speed isn't much of a drawback in this deck. In fact, it should be your prime finisher since it just uncounterably wins the game on the spot once you have infinite mana.

With both Nikya of the Old Ways and Nullhide Ferox in the deck you may want to trim down the number of non-creature spells in the deck.

Some inexpensive upgrades to consider:

Hellkite Charger turns that extra mana into extra attack steps [and more mana and more attacks]

Comet Storm does everything that Volcanic Geyser does and then can do it to multiple targets.

Siege Behemoth gives the Thorn Elemental ability to your whole team and offers some protection for itself as well.

Guardian Project and Soul of the Harvest offer more card draw from casting critters.

Skarrg, the Rage Pits can give a little combat boost plus grants trample.

Almost any mana rock out there is an upgrade over Manalith ; Gruul Signet , Mind Stone , Commander's Sphere , etc. Plus Sol Ring means turn 2 commander.

Not quite as cheap but can help get you some +1/+1 counters from mentor as well as goblins to sac to Arms Dealer or Skirk Prospector is Legion Warboss .
