Modern Zoo

facematt

Sideboard

Maybeboard

Creature (95)

game plan of this deck is to attack from multiple angles and to have the opp not know how to prevent the bulk of the damage. This deck is tough to pilot for 2 main reasons:

1) fetching in the first 2 turns and fetching post-side.

2) knowing when to start going face with the burn spells.

It has a very unique playstyle, despite sharing some key cards with very popular decks. But with some practice, it can be very deadly. Zoo as an archetype is very flexible, and this suite of burn and mantises fixes a lot of the brickwall problems that traditional zoo runs into.

Updates: Dec 11, 2018: Following an slightly below average performance at GP portland, I'll be trying a few diff cards in the flex slots. current flex slots are: main: 2 boros charm 2 inquisition side: 1 damping sphere 1 staticaster

December 20, 2018:

Same flex slot debates. However I am back to being certain on Boros charms. So we are back to two mainboard flex slots. The sideboard is tightening up too. I am now pretty high on damping sphere and may stay at 2 in the board in both these slots.

Some cards that I've been trying in recent leagues are:

remorseful cleric (1-2 main) has been very good. smoothes out the curve as an added bonus. helps against phoenix and kci primarily. two very hard matchups. bonus for hosing all the lower tier decks (dredge, mardu, etc.)

lingering souls (1-2 main) has won me games i have no business winning. has performed as expected but is bad against tron and kci and the like. maybe there is room for one in the board but my recent gameplan has been pretty reliant on my 2 mana hatebears from the side. adding a threat just kinds of changes the plan, which is why i can see it in the main before the side. tasigur (1 main) still need to try out.

Risk factor has been cut.

izzet staticaster has been cut but could come back. i would just rather try to race the decks that id bring it in against.

very hyped for RNA. the 3 mana haste guy got revealed today and looks like a great add. Settle-proof zoo if the meta ever shifts that way.

January 8, 2019

I managed to day 2 at GP Oakland with this list. Was very happy with the day. 6-2 on day 1. Lost round 9 on and dropped to get brunch instead. probably should have kept playing but i didnt feel my phoenix matchup is good enough at all. or i was just siding incorrectly. all 3 losses were to phoenix.

1 Abzan coco combos 2-0

2 Rakdos prison 2-0

3 Izzet Phoenix 1-2

4 KCI 2-0

5 Dredge 2-1

6 Bant Spirits 2-0

7 Boros Phoenix 0-2

8 Humans 2-0

———day 2———

9 Grixis Phoenix 0-2

I don't want to write a tournament report but the changes I'm trying out are: main: -1 grim lavamancer (spirit and human matchups are already good enough, this may come back. did not actually get to activate it in oakland)

+1 remorseful cleric (up to 2. it proved to be a very good two drop as well as the effect. it is not rest in peace but it helps)

Side:

cards i am experimenting to help the bird matchup are deflecting palm and kor firewalker. I realize i dont have great cards for jund either. hopefully spellbreaker improves that matchup.

Notes on losses: No way I was winning the red Phoenix list. 10 one drop creatures (2 weirds) and just so good. 3 darts and 3 gut shots. Streamlined deck. Made my one mistake of the day and played a goyf before the pridemage, when a 3/4 goyf might have ran away with the game, but i doubt it. i cant get my colors online vs this fast version of phoenix/r prowess. might be unwinnable game 1.

The Tron loss was actually me drawing poorly, and tbh being unprepared. I made a concession the night before to cut my last sphere. But spheres should really be 2 of or none imo. But tbh.. I did draw poorly this game. Kept a one lander I think.

The eldrazi list was FIRE. Great deck, great pilot, and curved perfectly. eldrazis are a problem and probably warrant a 3rd path somewhere.

Changes I'm thinking about:

+1 path somewhere (eldrazi and humans)

+2 spheres (they are necessary whether i want them to be or not)

+more KoA?? the 1/1 split felt very nice in the main.

+reflector mages if phoenix comes back

-1 blessed alliance. was scared of infect/bogles, didnt see them, they dont deserve two slots

-GY hate, 1 jailer?? i didnt see hogaak but on MTGO this package of 6 cards was fine.

-1 bbe...i dont want to cut one but might have to for speed.

the damage package of boros charms and ghor clans will always be good..and wondering if my 60 should just be less teched out and more damage based. lightning skelemental was very castable in testing and deserves another look.

wrenn and six were great...i think they might be in this list to stay.

Next major event is vegas where i dont known if ill be playing this. mill got a new card and could greatly improve the deck. worried that tribal zoo might just be a x-2/x-3 deck no matter how i tweak it. will continue to test!

thanks for reading
