Confounding Conundrum Discussion

russ1656 on Brago's Electric slide v1

Strionic Resonator is like a 2 mana version of lithoform. It can be tutored with Tribute Mage and Enlightened Tutor and is the best Brago wincon in my opinion (along with Lithoform). I also like running some cheap cards that draw on ETB to flicker with Brago like Confounding Conundrum and Omen of the Sea . Act of Authority has been a top-notch removal spell for me. I find that his biggest weakness is getting through flying blockers. Usually, someone has no flyers out at the table, but if you play one-on-one, I'd add some evasion. Traveler's Cloak and Unquestioned Authority give evasion and a card when flickered. I don't see this in a lot of lists, but I love Scroll of Fate . You can manifest any permanent from your hand, then flicker it and it returns to play face up. Cloudform and Lightform do this too, but off the top of your deck instead. Hello,

It's refreshing to see new players coming up with their own deck ideas instead of just copying the top meta decks. Welcome to the game btw!

I haven't seen many people play dedicated "fractal" decks so far, but something that I've seen people make work was using Body of Research to make a huge body and then win with Fling or Kazuul's Fury  Flip. It seems pretty close to the way you try to play the deck anyway seeing how you like to have Solve the Equation in your opening hands. A combo deck like that wouldn't really need as many tribal interaction and focus mostly on getting the right cards out asap while just staying alive, so cards that give better card selections Omen of the Sea , bounce spells Into the Roil and counterspells Saw It Coming could be more helpful.

If you prefer to play the tribal aspect where you try to win with creatures and superior board state, you shouldn't really need to rush to a specific card like you do when using Solve the Equation . Instead you should try to get the most out of you creatures. The Great Henge seems like a great fit in this case since you will have large bodies for the discount, and your creatures will get more +1/+1 counters for your existing synergies. I'm not sure what Confounding Conundrum is there for, it's usually a side-board card, or a card built around things like Field of Ruin to trigger it or in Yorion, Sky Nomad to bounce it, but another 2 drop you could consider would be Guardian Gladewalker since it gives a +1/+1 counter and it also counts as a fractal for Biomathematician .

I find that The Ozolith is a very nice fit for the deck, but drawing multiple is hardly ever going to help you, so you could easily cut 1 and only play 3. Also, going up to 23(or more) lands certainly wouldn't hurt. You could make it a Mountain if you want to go the combo route to supplement your Ketria Triome for the red splash so that any Fabled Passage can be a red source.

Btw, you seem to think that The Ozolith would cover you if Body of Research gets "countered", but if that happens the creature won't ever exist, so there will be no counters for The Ozolith to pick-up. If it resolves and then the creature gets destroy or remove from play by any means, then yes it would work.

Hopefully these suggestions are useful,

Good luck!

Hi, I like the swaps you made! Confounding Conundrum is a great idea that I hadn't considered, particularly if your group plays a lot of land based ramp. Thanks for taking a look at my decklist! It's still very much a work in progress so let me know if you think I should make any changes.

[re-posted & edited twice, R.I.P. my typing] Hey there cmilner I went with Icon of Ancestry as a currently available alternative as I don't own Herald's Horn so I'll see how that works out and adjust from there! I've switched Plague Wind with Cyclonic Rift a must have card for sure. I'm considering a card like Confounding Conundrum as slowing down opponent's strategies in a tempo deck seems good. What do you think? Thank you for the suggestions, I've also checked your deck. I found it very helpful and interesting. I'm considering some cards from yours to add and help adjust my own deck! :) Kind regards, Sozumaki

Hey there cmilner, I went with Icon of Ancestry as an available alternative for now as I don't own Herald's Horn . I'll see how that works out and adjust from there! I'm planning on switching Plague Wind with Cyclonic Rift for sure. I'm considering cards like Confounding Conundrum and Propaganda . CaptainToll on Are there any old cards …

Dance of the Manse : For pillowforty decks like Pramikon to return removed stax pieces like Suppression Field (very strong card as it includes fetchlands and PW's and shuts off a nice variety of other stuff....mainly all of my other decks as they often assemble creature loops), or Oath of Lieges , or Confounding Conundrum (vs pesky ramp) and so on. It's in mah baby Pramikon Hurr Durr Slow Game.

Driven / Despair : You got tokens? You in G/B? Man get your opponents some true despair. Super nasty in Hapatra, Vizier of Poisons . Could be deece in Grismold, the Dreadsower .

Ghostly Pilferer : You want to have a value piece vs commanders and a discard outlet for potential reanimator style and the ability to draw on its own? Here you go. Speaking of reanimator: get yourself some ape snake with Thieving Amalgam . This thing takes over the game, if reanimated early (sure Grave Titan , Jin-Gitaxias, Core Augur , Sire Of Insanity and a heap of others do so too, but they are not as cheap as mah boi or make it a non game like the Sire or Jin-Gitaxias do). It's like a battlecruiser version of Consecrated Sphinx .

Joven : because reasons. Aesthetics. Insane with Liquimetal Coating . Stone Rain on a chonky stick.

LuckDragon on Orvar Over-Budget

Other cards you might consider: - High Tide . Why are you not running High Tide? It makes going off with Orvar super easy, and it's tutorable with Spellseeker . Casting it multiple times by recurring it with Archaeomancer or Mystic Sanctuary is great. - Dizzy Spell . Can be used defensively and to trigger Orvar, but it also tutors for most of the repeatable spells ( Clockspinning , etc.). - Sudden Substitution . "Nice Expropriate you've got there. Why don't we trade? You get this Spellseeker I've already used, and I'll get your extra turns. And a new Spellseeker. No, you don't get to respond." - Merchant Scroll . Tutor all the instants. - Spark Double . Lets you have any number of Orvars. Targeting one Island and getting eight is rather nice. - Glimpse the Cosmos . Dig six cards deep for at most . - Confounding Conundrum . Replaces itself and slows down the opposing ramp decks, getting more punishing with every copy. Eventually acts as a way to draw your deck. (Generate infinite mana, then copy it decksize times.)

More spendy suggestions: - Sakashima of a Thousand Faces . Like the original, can enter without becoming a copy, meaning you can target him and make a token version—which can enter as a copy of something. Also lets you have any number of Orvars. - Treachery . Goes infinite in the same way as Peregrine Drake , while also providing value without Orvar or a repeatable target source. - Palinchron . Goes infinite in the same way as Peregrine Drake, and can even go infinite without Orvar, provided you have something like ...
