Confounding Conundrum Discussion

MrBoombastic on Get in there all sneaky like...(Flash/Mill/Rogues)

VampDemigod I think Extinction Event easy cut - it's slow, sorcery speed and the deck is rarely in need of board wipes.

Now that Omnath, Locus of Creation is out, you're also safe to replace Confounding Conundrum with something better.

Confounding Conundrum could be a good stax piece to consider.

Miscast could also be a good add, if not a great add for budget decks.

I'm also surprised I haven't seen Force of Despair in this list, although the blue pips to black is heavily favored to blue and FoD may be more dependent on your playgroup/meta.

Into the Story seems like an excellent late game card, but might slow down play early on. Glacial Grasp could replace 1, or 2 Into the Story.

Confounding Conundrum is very much a side-deck card. It is not likely that most of your opponents will be drawing and playing an extra land per turn. I like the idea of Keep Safe to counter your opponents effects that could slow you down, while drawing cards to trigger Teferi's Tutelage.

Merfolk Secretkeeper relies on effects that return it to your hand so that you can replay Venture Deeper and Merfolk Windrobber also seems like a rather weak and situational card. I like the idea of cards like Facet Reader and Teferi's Protege to trigger extra card draws and extra mill from Teferi's Tutelage.

Other cards that I would consider (and maybe put in a side-board) are Chilling Trap, Deliberate and Field Research

Scallywallwest on Grixis Tempo Might Be Fun

Sideboard options in standard: Tormod's Crypt, Confounding Conundrum, Mystical Dispute, Extinction Event (Decent boardwipe in black), or Fry.

I love Grixis tempo/aggro/control. I'd recommend cutting some basics and such for the MDFCs, you might like Jwari Disruption  Flip. Also, you appear to like discard/casting synergies, so here is what I recommend for both:

  • For more prowess-y like stuff, if you want to go a bit more spellslinger-ish, consider running Stormwing Entity or Underworld Breach. If you're not worried about your things getting killed, definitely consider adding wraths to the main. Storm's Wrath does a great job at this.

  • For a more discard-synergy oriented deck, I'd say add more things that make you discard to power up Rielle. Ox of Agonas does this really well, and I see you already are running 3x Royal Scions. Also, take a look at Chandra, Heart of Fire if you want to go down this route.

Seems like a decent deck that has a lot of potential. At the moment, the deck is somewhat muddled, but with the proper tweaks, this could be a force to reckon with. I wish you good luck in getting there!

rkjunior, I’m either going to keep Armageddon or replace it with Mana Breach or Confounding Conundrum. But I am definitely going to cut Ravages of War for Spark Double.

I think Bala Ged Recovery  Flip or Lore Drakkis would fit rather nicely in here.

Also Escape Protocol and cycling could do some interesting stuff.

Then there's Cleansing Wildfire with Confounding Conundrum out. Destroy two lands, two lands come into play, they have to bounce one and their landfall triggers start reducing... How well it performs is the question

It doesn’t help with but Confounding Conundrum would work to keep your opponents from ramping out quickly if you face a lot of land ramp. That it’s only 2 mana and replaces itself is also a bonus.

Limiting their options while you start to mill should help give you a bit of an edge. They can’t even use a fetch on the turn they play it with that out lol

Hm.. tough call. Dockside Extortionist is the same CMC als Ouphe but boosts your own game with mana advantage while Ouphe tries to shut your opponent's ramp down. Aura Shards is a mighty card and especially with your token generation should clear the board quite reliably of opponents enchantments and artifacts. Also, if I see this right, Shards is your only enchantment spot removal. Your greatest problem in this deck is probably an opponent's Confounding Conundrum. I know it is only a single card, but I would consider putting additional spot removal in if possible.
