Concept

Why Karametra? Show

I chose Karametra for several reasons, but these three especially: I love , I love having lands to play with, and I love playing around unique mechanics like devotion.

Green has access to the greatest ramp and beefy creatures, and White has access to tough control elements and cheap creatures of value. Green and White both allow for life gain to stay in the game, as well as solid evasion like Trample and Vigilance to close out the game. is a balanced combination that can be ready for any match-up.

Lands are my favorite part of MTG. With Karametra, I am able to pull lands out of my deck without dedicating as many cards to pull them out. Karametra allows most of my spells to become an automatic ramp spell while also serving a greater purpose.

Last but not least, having a challenge to overcome makes winning that much sweeter. It's not difficult to play a great commander like Animar, Soul of Elements or Omnath, Locus of Mana and win with Commander damage. With Karametra, I have to optimize board state to even attack with her, let alone deal enough damage to finish off 2+ opponents. Other cards I have in my 99 have a similar theme, and their interaction with gameplay always makes things interesting, even if they are not optimal choices to consistently win.

I understand that Karametra is not the best commander, but she is my favorite!

General thought-process for card choice Show

My rationales for my selections for the 99 are very similar to the conditions for choosing Karametra. In order to skip out on ramp spells, I needed to select creatures that not only had an impact on the board, but also were efficient in their CMC. In order to interact with my opponents, I had to select cards with options and variability rather than replicating similar abilities and effects. To confidently go to combat, I had to have cards that supported my creatures in whatever scenario my opponents build against me. Lastly, I needed to be able to suppress my opponents to defend myself from alternative win conditions and strategies.

Game Plan

Early Game Show

As with every deck with , the early game is to ramp quickly to get Karametra on the field. Now is the time to ramp with Birds of Paradise, Avacyn's Pilgrim, or Ancient Tomb if you're lucky, or lay down a Kataki, War's Wage to prevent other decks from getting value from their Sol Rings. The goal is to have Karametra on the battlefield by turn 3 or 4, but definitely by turn 5.

Mid Game Show

Once Karametra is ready to grab you lands, it's time to start laying down creature spells. Since Karametra is a 5CMC card, the next turn 6 mana can be utilized, so casting two 3CMC creatures (i.e. Reclamation Sage or Rhonas the Indomitable) ends up with 8 mana by turns 5-8. Any creature can be cast with that amount of mana. If there aren't enough creatures to fully ramp, disrupt opponents with control or lay down a draw engine. At this point, there should be plenty of room for interaction with opponents and strategies for treading forward from this point is highly dependent on everyone's board state. This is the most crucial part!

Late Game Show

In the late game, strategy depends on how the first few turns go and if someone is potentially going to win soon. Dig through the deck to find cards to stop opponents such as Yasharn, Implacable Earth or Linvala, Keeper of Silence, or to set up a win with Avenger of Zendikar.

End Game Show

Cards that help end the game include creating a bunch of dudes with Avenger of Zendikar, making everything big with Felidar Retreat, using Elesh Norn, Grand Cenobite to make everyone cry, or swinging in with Karametra fully pumped with Sublime Archangel and Odric, Lunarch Marshal on board until everyone dies.

Individual Card Choices

Ramp and Show

Since every game needs to have lands, and Ramping is the beginning of every game, these choices are especially important.

• Basic Forest and Plains: Can be tutored by Karametra, and come into play untapped. Opponents that use Blood Moon and Magus of the Moon are cruel and must be played around.

• Savannah: The OG Forest Plains, usually tutored in the event of Armageddon and need to fix my land base again.

• Arctic Treeline: The newest member of the Forest Plains family, it is among the first to be tutored since it comes into play tapped anyway.

• Scattered Groves: Forest Plains with Cycling, which is helpful!

• Canopy Vista: Another Forest Plains to be tutored.

• Temple Garden: The Forest Plains that I may choose to put into play tapped or not.

• Mistveil Plains: Not only can Karametra harvest it, but it can recur my graveyard in response to removal, allow a used card to be tutored, or prevent opponents from using my GY against me.

• Sapseep Forest: My opponents told me to "Get a life!", so I did! Is a cute little conduit for Heliod, Sun-Crowned.

• Ancient Tomb: Early game ramp that can lead to very early plays of Karametra. A little damage can go a long way!

• Birds of Paradise: Classic creature ramp.

• Courser of Kruphix: Of course Courser is a must-have! Pseudo-draw by playing lands off the library plus life-gain is the name of the game.

• Augur of Autumn: A cool new Courser that lets me cast creatures in the mid-to-late game!

• Avacyn's Pilgrim: Mana dork!

• Sanctum Weaver: While not as bonkers in this deck as Enchantment-heavy decks, it can still consistently tap for 2-3 mana a turn, which can be just what I need to play my bigger spells.

• Krosan Verge: Cracking a KV can get Karametra out a turn early as long as you can drop a fifth land.

• Sakura-Tribe Elder: Another classic ramp spell with the classic "block-sac" move, this dude makes almost every starting hand a keeper.

• Selesyna Sanctuary: Makes two mana and gets me an extra land to play. Amulet of Vigor makes this land even more amazing.

• Dryad of the Ilysian Grove: A fairly new creature, but does two jobs for the price of one! Extra lands per turn and fixes any color needs. Works well with Emeria, The Sky Ruin too.

• Lotus Cobra: This guy is a class of ramp all on his own, especially along with Karametra on the board!

Draw and Tutor Show

As with every deck, you can't play more cards if you don't draw them. While Karametra helps thin my deck, these cards are dedicated to filling the grip to find ways to utilize the lands she harvests.

• Horizon Canopy: While early game this land can help fix mana, after that it can be sacrificed to pluck a card. Can get a nonland card out of the way for Courser of Kruphix or Augur of Autumn.

• Mentor of the Meek: With about half of the creatures being meek or producing meek creatures, Mentor can get plenty of triggers and fill up a sad hand.

• Mikokoro, Center of the Sea: Great to use at the end of an opponent's turn, when you need to find a land for turn, or clearing the way for Courser of Kruphix or Oracle of Mul Daya.

• Reki, the History of Kamigawa: Most of the permanents are legendary, so almost every spell is a cantrip. Never an empty hand with this guy! Works well with Captain Sisay.

• Beast Whisperer: One of my new favorite cards because he is a second Reki, the History of Kamigawa except hits even more creatures!

• Sylvan Library: Pretty much a free Sensei's Divining Top every turn, with the perk of the option of drawing cards. Sweet :)

• Eladamri's Call: As close to Demonic Tutor as and can get. Can be played at the end of opponent's turn to maximize the surprise from the creature choice, or simply during the Main phase to get a game-finisher.

• Sylvan Scrying: When I need a turn 3 Ancient Tomb or Selesnya Sanctuary, or if I want to have some blockers with Field of the Dead, or have to avoid blocking but can't find Kor Haven, Sylvan Scrying does the job.

Control Show

Combo decks, non-creature decks, and any deck that likes to mess with Karametra need to be put down before they do any serious damage. Countering the effects of other decks is important to maintain a peace of mind while attempting to trample over foes. These cards are mostly one-sided, allowing full range of Karametra's might.

• Dragonlord Dromoka: Is someone saying "No" to all of the creatures being cast? Dromoka says "No" back. Don't let a Cyclonic Rift ruin your perfect turn! Also Flying and Lifelink are often relevant, especially if Odric, Lunarch Marshal is in play.

• Homeward Path: Some people like to steal creatures (looking at you, Blatant Thievery, Desertion, et al!), so this returns what is rightfully mine.

• Kataki, War's Wage: hates artifacts, and Kataki is a classic hater. He may not guarantee removal, but he can slow down many artifact-heavy decks while also being a fun little beatstick. He is legendary, so he can be tutored easily and triggers Reki, the History of Kamigawa.

• Kor Haven: Classic life-saver. Even with no creatures to block with, this land can protect against commanders or huge creatures.

• Linvala, Keeper of Silence: I heard some people like to use abilities of creatures to win EDH games... Linvala says they can't do that anymore. Mairsil, the Pretender? Kiki-Jiki, Mirror Breaker? Ramos, Dragon Engine? Tough break fellahs.

• Sigarda, Host of Herons: Eldrazi are things... and so are Pox, Smallpox, and Grave Pact. Sacrificing creatures is no bueno. She is also a great beatstick with Flying and Hexproof.

• Yasharn, Implacable Earth: Graveyard decks and Suicide Black: fear the Boar!

• Serra's Emissary: Need to get in for damage? Name Creature! Worried about interaction on your turn? Name Instant! Whatever is ailing you, this is the vaccine!

• Archon of Valor's Reach: Since most of the deck are creature spells, you can pretty much pick anything but that and be A-OK!

Anthem Show

Not every creature can handle three or four opponents single-handedly, but that is why there are effects that can improve the punch each creature does. This is more than just damage, but evasion and working together as a team as well to give them the ol' one-two.

• Avacyn, Angel of Hope: In a format where everything and anything can be destroyed, being Indestructible is great. Chord of Calling in response to a board wipe to save everything. With Shalai, Voice of Plenty on the battlefield, it'll be tough to deal with that board state. Being an 8/8, frequently triggers Selvala, Heart of the Wilds's draw trigger too!

• Avenger of Zendikar: Great friend of mine. Almost always a win within one or two turns with cute little plant tokens. Landfall triggers go off with each creature cast with Karametra on the battlefield, plus land drops for the turn can be a ton of damage coming at opponents.

• Elesh Norn, Grand Cenobite: Probably the most overpowered card in the deck, but it's not an automatic game-winner, and this deck doesn't cheat creatures into play, so I'd say it's fair to play in this case.

• Gavony Township: I don't know what they're putting in the water in Gavony, but they have some beefy dudes in there.

• Odric, Lunarch Marshal: This guy is also pretty great because he makes derpy dudes great. Karametra has Indestructible, Angel of Destiny has Double Strike, Dragonlord Dromoka has Flying and Lifelink, and Elesh Norn, Grand Cenobite has Vigilance. Most of the creatures have something to offer, and Odrich brings their strengths to the team.

• Sublime Archangel: Exalted is the shiznit. Karametra suddenly becomes a voltron commander, especially with other dudes like Rhonas the Indomitable to give her trample or other forms of evasion.

• Felidar Retreat: Build an army, or pump it up! Either one, just for doing what you were doing anyway!

Mana Sink Show

You ever find yourself fidgeting with something? That's because you need to occupy yourself doing anything, and that's what mana sinks are for. "Well... I have all this mana... now what?" Having these mana sinks can provide the edge needed to overcome adversity. The general theme of this section is indestructibility and evasion.

• Rhonas the Indomitable: Indestructible, Deathtouch, and Trample are the keywords. Buffing is the game. Odric, Lunarch Marshal also makes this more interesting.

• Shalai, Voice of Plenty: Hexproof and Flying are the keywords. Counter-boosts are the game. I was considering categorizing this card under utility, but in the end the anthem is what made this card stand out to me, so here it is.

• Heliod, Sun-Crowned: Being slow to start up, this deck can take a beating early on. Heliod 2.0 can help out while also beefing up creatures (or even Karametra before she even becomes a creature). Of course, becomes a beater at full devotion.

• Nylea, Keen-Eyed: Perfect addition to this deck. Reduces the mana cost of all creatures, and digs in the deck for more. Using with Courser of Kruphix or Augur of Autumn will guarantee drawing creatures every activation! Getting all these creatures lets him become a big bad dude as well!

Board Wipe and Removal Show

Inevitably, there will be moments when games are getting too crazy. I have shied away from using mass removal because they tend to be clunky in the hand and realistically only a couple permanents per player are real threats at a time. Removal that coincides with the overall plan tends to make things smoother in the long run. No longer having to wait an extra turn just to clear the board.

• Aura Shards: Since over a third of the deck is creature cards, Shards makes every spell spot removal. For noncreature decks, this card is very scary to see hit the board. This also gets around Humility.

• Ghost Quarter: If I can use Kor Haven, so can everyone else. I don't like my creatures not dealing combat damage.

• Reclamation Sage: This deck really hates noncreature spells. I really wish I could include a Ruric Thar, the Unbowed in this deck, but whatever. I'm not mad. I'm NOT.

• Tectonic Edge: For when you already got rid of their Kor Haven and now they have a Maze of Ith too... Maybe I should include a Strip Mine if they happen to have a Mystifying Maze on top of it.

• Qasali Pridemage: This card is basically a deterrent for my opponents to even play their threats, all while also giving my creatures a buff if they attack alone. Replayable with Sun Titan, Eternal Witness, and Timeless Witness.

• Revoke Existence: Needed when you just have to completely wipe out and artifact or enchantment.

• Solitude: Very abuseable with Eldrazi Displacer, and can surprise opponents while still triggering Karametra, God-Eternal Oketra, and Beast Whisperer.

• Winds of Abandon: Many EDH decks run few basics, so this could clear the board with very few repercussions on my board. Or if someone is going off early, can be used as an emergency spot removal.

Utility Show

Utility is the largest category after Forests and Plains because the whole purpose of the deck is to be versatile and mobile. To be in the Utility category, a card must interact well with others, have more than one use, or make gameplay more efficient.

• Amulet of Vigor: Drawing this turn 1 is amazing. The interactions with every ramp spell and ability lead to insanely fast games. Pay no mind to the enemy Urabrask the Hidden or Orb of Dreams.

• Dryad Arbor: I've already mentioned this card a couple times. Very easily tutored for ramp such as with Green Sun's Zenith, draw with Mentor of the Meek, or chump blocks after a nonland wrath.

• Emeria, The Sky Ruin: Sometimes creatures die. With all the Plains cards tutored by Karametra, it is easy to be able to get value out of this utility land. Definitely a late game necessity while exhausting opponents' resources.

• Eternal Witness: Sometimes there are things that are best left in the hand and not in the graveyard. This green staple takes care of that dilemma.

• Timeless Witness: Eternal Witness, but more!

• High Market: When Avacyn, Angel of Hope is threatened with Path to Exile, or when Eternal Witness would be better in the graveyard during a Sun Titan trigger, High Market gets work done.

• Karmic Guide: Everyone knows Karmic Guide is a great card. When people hate on the other baddies of the deck, KG has their backs.

• Stirring Wildwood: If I don't have a creature, I'll make one.

• Sun Titan: The ultimate weenie champion. Stuff dies, such as at the hands of Austere Command, and Titan gets them back. That's what he does.

• Whitemane Lion: This little guy is a funny mechanic, as he nets me lands at instant speed, and saves other cards from removal. Can potentially get more ETB and cast triggers for other creatures too, if that's what he's needed for. It's fun to swing with little Plant tokens from Avenger of Zendikar and pump them up before damage!

• Winding Canyons: Playing cards that are usually cast at sorcery speed at instant speed is always good. Surprise! Avacyn, Angel of Hope! Bet you didn't see this Elesh Norn, Grand Cenobite coming, did you? I'd like to not let my creatures get removed before I can attack, thank you very much.

• Wooded Bastion: This land helps fix the colors so it's easier to cast the spells with 2+ mana symbols in their costs.

• God-Eternal Oketra: This guy is realllly good without being impossible to beat. Building an army of 4/4s while playing other things is definitely how I want to win.

• Once Upon a Time: Great for digging in the early game for a ramp or draw source, or for finding an answer in the late game. Amazing effect for 0 mana, pretty great at 2 at instant speed!

• Questing Beast: This is mostly a fun card; two keywords that I am missing for Odric, Lunarch Marshal (haste, deathtouch), can evade dorks, and can even kill planeswalkers if need be (with multiple ways to give it trample!).

• Ashaya, Soul of the Wild: He ramps. He makes "destroy target nonland permanent" useless against my creatures. He's a big dude!

• Eldrazi Displacer: Abuse ETB triggers, or get opponents' creatures out of the way!

• Emeria Shepherd: This card loves a full graveyard, especially with Karametra on the field!

• Field of the Dead: Might as well get free creatures whenever I play a land, even if they are zombies. Friends are friends.

• Gaea's Blessing: This has a love-hate relationship with the graveyard. Also helps change the top of the deck when Courser of Kruphix or Augur of Autumn don't show me what I want.

• Kodama of the East Tree: Free stuff is the best stuff.

• Saryth, the Viper's Fang: Hexproof is good. Deathtouch is good. Untapping a creature to block or a Selesnya Sanctuary to ramp isn't too bad either!

• Tireless Provisioner: Ramping until I can't no more, then draw till I need to ramp some more!

Mutate Package Show

I added several "mutate" cards because I like the Scute Mob combo, and to have a way for Karametra to have other combat abilities (specifically Trample). Perhaps they are just going to be the weak link in my deck, but that's the price of fun haha. Scute Mob also pairs well with Mentor of the Meek or Elesh Norn, Grand Cenobite.
