mgc974 on Vela the night clad combo ...

Hello everyone,

Here is my Vela, the night-clad combo artefact deck. I built thins deck around 4 differents and some specific synergie. I want to stay budget.

The goal of the deck is simple: draw, tutor, loot, find the pieces of combo, play the combo. At instant speed if it's possible with Shimmer Myr. On of the obstacle for the deck is that we need Vela on the battlefield first, than we can combo.

This is my first real combo deck ans it's for playing in a casual metagame. So I choose to play two combo that requires 4 cards (Vela included), one that requires 3 cards and one that requires only 2 cards.

Maybe the deck is a little weaker. But i want to keep a flexibility and not always try to win turn 5/6. My goal is that my deck remains a challenge for me when i'm playing with it. I can choose the level of difficulty.

So here are the combos:

Krark-Clan Ironworks + Mirrorworks+ Myr Retriever + Vela the Night-Clad or Marionette Master

Battered Golem + Banishing Knack + Ornithopter + Vela the Night-Clad or Marionette Master

Grand Architect + Pili-Pala + Exsanguinate or Torment of Hailfire

Thopter Assembly + Time Sieve

I use some card draw and tutor to find my combo pieces.

And here some synergies:

Scrap Trawler and Darksteel Plate + card:Nevinyrrall's disk or Oblivion Stone

Rite of Replication + Vela the Night-Clad. With Rite of replication kicked, it deals 30 damages to opponents when you sacrifice the five copies of Vela.

I'm for your advices to perfect my deck. I take all advices.

Just no cards over 5/7 dollars

I would fix your mana base first. Average EDH decks have 45 mana sources, and Tiana definitely needs it, so consider more lands or rocks like Gilded Lotus/Boros Cluestone/Commander's Sphere/Fire Diamond/Marble Diamond etc etc. Fiery Mantle/Dragon Breath could replace Mark of Fury/Goblin War Paint? Guise of Fire/Bonds of Faith/Prophetic Ravings could replace Bloodshed Fever/Hammerhand/Cartouche of Zeal? Graceblade Artisan is a great duplicate of Champion of the Flame, it could replace Favored Hoplite/Call To Serve. If you want more combat map control you could run Goblin Spymaster/Overwhelming Splendor. Immolation/Inferno Fist are good duplicates of Ordeal of Purphoros.

Other than these replacements, I think you made a fine deck. I would include more finishers like Shiv's Embrace/Splinter Twin/Elemental Mastery/Burning Anger/Battle Mastery, or include a combo with Battered Golem/Paradox Engine/Endbringer/Traxos, Scourge of Kroog. I think some weaker finishers in this deck right now are Giant Spectacle/Lightning Reflexes/Madcap Skills/Lightning Talons. And I think Gift of Immortality is alright, but it doesn't protect your auras in extension if a creature-only board wipe happens, so another indestructible spells would be better.

I like the neat combo of Pariah and Tiana, and your enchantment based draw engines + Auratog/Faith Healer is another neat combo. Curse of Opulence is a great include, it's a one drop that adds influences damage away from you and toward your 120 combined life goal. Umbra Mystic/Anax and Cymede/Heavenly Blademaster are also great includes!

Battered Golem comboes infinitely with the Retraction Helix and the Banishing Knack. I'd add 4 of them immediately

Updated version of my comment about the possible combos

Also here are the possible combos

1)infinite mill Cathartic Adept / Screeching Sliver + Mirran Spy +0 mana artifact+ Zephyr Scribe / Battered Golem / Nettle Drone + Banishing Knack / Retraction Helix

2)infinite damage same thing but replace the Cathartic Adept / Screeching Sliver with Nettle Drone

3)in case of no Mirran Spy just replace the Nettle Drone /Cathartic Adept / Screeching Sliver with Reckless Fireweaver and start bouncing the artifact as normal for infinite damage. Same can achieved with Grapeshot but after the infinite bouncing of the artifact

Traxos, Scourge of Kroog is the second playset of Battered Golem to enable a more consistent combo.

(Alternatively it can be used to simply beat face, and win via 3 consecutive attack steps - while stonewalling the enemy vigilance style)

I like this combo mainly because of the flexibility in the cards you can combo off with. One 0 mana artifact (Welding Jar probably being the best, Herbal Poultice, or the creatures), one creature that untaps when the artifact ETBs (there are 5 different creatures that do this: Battered Golem, Nettle Drone, Zephyr Scribe if you use a non-creature artifact, Traxos, Scourge of Kroog which is also a wincon on its own, and Mirran Spy), one card that has an ability that triggers whenever a permanent, artifact or creature if you use them enters the battlefield (Molten Nursery, Altar of the Brood, Impact Tremors, or Nettle Drone does it as well), and Retraction Helix or Banishing Knack.

I think that adding red gives you some good options like Nettle Drone and Molten Nursery. I also think that you should run on average 6 of each of the combo pieces. Welding Jar and Herbal Poultice I think are better than Ornithopter and Memnite as they protect the combo. This is probably better than the nut draw of getting the combo out on turn 3.

Springleaf Drum only has one purpose and does not do much if you don't have Memnite or Ornithopter in your opening hand.

I think this deck would be cool with Chief Engineer and then some cards that untap when artifacts enter the battelfield like Battered Golem, Grinding Station, Traxos, Scourge of Kroog to help keep casting more artifacts so that you can win with Aetherflux Reservoir. Reckless Fireweaver also works as another finisher.

Quicksmith Genius + Riddlesmith also help dig if you draw into lands to keep casting historic spells.

Turnabout is a second dramatic reversal

and Ichor Wellspring, Mycosynth Wellspring, Burnished Hart, Pilgrim's Eye, Solemn Simulacrum - just because they are great

I would consider removing: Chain of vapors, Magus of the Wheel, Torpor Orb (as it removes 8 of your own Artifact creatures from triggering Jhora), Sorcerers Spyglass, Pyroblast, and Mystic Remora
