Forerunner of the Heralds Discussion

Hi! Looks like a sweet start to a Merfolk deck (a deck I've wanted to build myself for quite a while)! Here are some recommendations:

Additions:

Cuts:

  • Treetop Village and Lumbering Falls; manlands are so much worse in Commander than in 60-card formats
  • Remote Isle; blue and green have better ways to draw cards than cycling away your lands
  • Vivid Creek and Vivid Grove; green has much better mana fixing
  • Bioshift doesn't really do anything
  • Tideshaper Mystic is the same; cutting one opponent off of mana doesn't do much, and 1/1s for 1 that die to board wipes are mediocre at best.
  • World Shaper isn't really where you want to be; you don't have a ton of graveyard synergies
  • River's Rebuke isn't my favorite board wipe in Commander, even in blue/green. I'd play Devastation Tide instead.
  • Slinn Voda, the Rising Deep just does too little for 10 mana. If you're spending 10 mana on a single card, that card should be winning you the game.
  • Talrand, Sky Summoner, as you don't have a ton of spell synergies
  • True-Name Nemesis is good, but mainly in Legacy. In Commander, a 3/1 that just one player can't interact with is bad.
  • Shapers of Nature is a decent mana sink, but I think you'd rather just be doing something else with your mana.

Hope this helps! If you'd like me to explain some of my choices more, or if you want help on another deck, feel free to leave a comment on my profile, and I'll take a look as soon as I can!

Kopala really offers a lot of protection, and while i did want to add trickster to the main deck, a problem i ran into doing so is a clunky mana curve. Curving Kumena's Speaker into trickster can be hard. Forerunner of the Heralds is a bit slow as a four-drop compared to Tempest Caller since it does not impact the board directly. Jade Bearer does have the problem of being a bad card on turn one, so i might just run 4 Kumena's Speakers.

I think you should have Merfolk Trickster in your main deck for Kopala, Warden of Waves. You may also want to try adding Forerunner of the Heralds. Also not a big fan of Jade Bearer.

Definitely need at least 3 Kumena, Tyrant of Orazca. I would also drop the Forerunner of the Heralds in favor of Deeproot Elite, and add Silvergill Adept as at least a 3 of for the card draw, and you definitely need Merfolk Mistbinder for the lord ability. Ancient Animus doesn't really fit your build because you don't have any legends, so I would honestly drop it. I would also drop Opt as you will have the card draw from the Adept. The last thing you might isadding in Tempest Caller for that late game push instead of banking on making your creatures unblockable. In the games that I played with Herald of Secret Streams I rarely lasted long enough to make it worth it (Those Goblin Chainwhirlers are insane!)

First problem I see here is that you only have 42 cards. If you bring that to a tournament, you won't be able to play it because the minimum card count for your deck is 60 cards. I would add:

Merfolk Mistbinder, Forerunner of the Heralds, Deeproot Elite, Deeproot Waters, Strength of the Pack, Reason // Believe, Mist-Cloaked Herald and Seafloor Oracle.

Merfolk Mistbinder? Forerunner of the Heralds? I'm not a big fan of Jace as he's soooooo expensive to get out and you're either going to be dying, dead, or winning when you cast him and he won't do much. Not a big fan of Shapers of Nature either. Where do you get the trample?

Can't help but feel like Forerunner of the Heralds is better than Waker of the Wilds. Swift Warden can also play nicely with all the instants the deck has, and can double up for protection. Really like the deck, it's tough to decide between Kumena or Jhoira for a stormy type deck in Brawl!
