Hi all! I'm getting back into the swing of things as I'm back from all of my intense AP Reading stuff and am playing again. I have another gameplay report, some updates, and some other thoughts related to the deck partly inspired by some player comments and questions here. Before I get to that however I want to respond to everyone I hadn't had a chance to yet!

am3ience

The must-play card from Baldur's gate is Battle Angels of Tyr, which has already replaced Emeria Angel in my deck. Beyond that it's creating a headache for me with my Scion of the Ur-Dragon deck since there are so many more dragons to consider, but I haven't seen a ton more for Giada.

Glad you're enjoying the deck! You can totally write it up and link it here if you'd like! The more resources, the better for us all! As far as protection goes, Commander's Plate is a good choice, as protection is so much better than we think it's going to be. Ephemerate not so much unless we have a blink theme because of the one-off, situational nature of the card. I'd also add that, in my experience, we don't need to worry too much if she dies a couple of times. At 2cmc we can recast her a few times no problem, and smart opponents will not feel it's not worth it when there will be more immediate threats on the board, or will not want to target her when she has already put some massive threats out. They killed her four times the other night, and when they ran out of removal I put out a massive flight of angels to kill them out in almost a single turn! I'd agree on Eye of Vecna being really good draw. Less so on Thorough Investigation; it's rather Dawn of Hope that always manages to be just not that great for me, though time will tell on this all. I'm trying to get Inspiring Overseer back in as it seems good. I have Angel of the Dire Hour in my binder too and just want to warn that it is a trap card. We'll almost never hold open seven mana to use it, so most of the time it will be an otherwise vanilla 5/4 flyer for 7 which is just terrible. If she were 4cmc, then she would definitely be played!

Thanks for the compliment, comment, and upvote! I upvoted your deck too. Feel free to let us know how it goes and share any insights you have from play!

Thanks for the compliment, comment, and upvotes! I am glad you are enjoying the deck, as I have been! As far as cards go, I can definitely see the case for Shadowspear. It does fit the curve and gives us life-link, and if there are Sigarda players or other annoying things like that in your meta it could me a good choice for dealing with that as well. Akroma's Will also probably belongs, for thematic reasons as much as anything. It would be a good replacement for Eerie Interlude, though I have another plan for replacing that card currently. Legion Loyalty does sound like fun and I'd recommend it for more Timmy-minded Giada players. At 8cmc I'm personally not willing to risk it, but that's just me! I can see some ridiculous "I win!" plays with a card like that from time to time! Blessed Sanctuary does sound like fun, and my unicorn/alicorn/pony loving daughters would probably appreciate it very much! That being said, it doesn't do much to help us with life loss combos or infinite attacker/attack step combos, which are pretty common out there, and as such is pretty narrow on those grounds. I play a lot of combo myself in other decks, and my top deck on tappedout is my Inalla, Archmage Ritualist deck which is about the most degenerate combo deck outside of cEDH imaginable. So, my tip from the dark lord about dealing with combos is that the best way to deal with them is to kill the combo player, destroy the combo pieces, or call out the combo pieces so someone else with removal can help us destroy them. That being said, unicorns are fun and flavorful, and if your meta has lots of ping-type infinite combos I could see it as a good meta choice in those circumstances!

I have been playtesting the deck and making my own edits, it's a lot of fun! If you're interested I can write up my edited deck list. One thing I have noticed is that since there isn't an overabundance of reach or flying at my table, Giada is a beacon for removal, with me having to cast her upwards of 4 or 5 times. I am contemplating a few cards like Commander's Plate or maybe a few like Ephemerate but the decklist is so fine tuned it's hard to figure out what I would take out for these effects. I played a few games this weekend, the last one was against a nasty Kynaios and Tyro control deck, a Chatterfang aristocrats deck, and Tovolar Dire Overlord. I just barely managed to win in the end thanks to Together Forever letting me save the same few angels from back to back board wipes.

Unsurprisingly, Avacyn, Angel of Hope is a a slam dunk. Eye of Vecna has been excellent card draw, while Thorough Investigation has been lacking. Inspiring Overseer has been a great way to draw a card while developing the board. Might try adding Angel of the Dire Hour just because it's a fun card I've never had the right deck for. Interested to see your updates going forward!

veritablecvn on Timing question with Angel of …

Yes, this works how you want. From Angel of the Dire Hour Gatherer page:

11/7/2014 Creatures that were declared as attackers or entered the battlefield attacking continue to be attacking creatures until the combat phase ends. It's possible to exile all attacking creatures after they've dealt combat damage if you cast Angel of the Dire Hour during the combat damage step or end of combat step.

The idea is that my opponent is attacking a different opponent, and I want all their creatures to deal combat damage, but before the attacking creatures lose their "attacking" status I want to cast Angel of the Dire Hour to exile the remaining attacking creatures. I assume there is enough time at the end of the combat phase to accomplish this...? Thanks in advance! :)

This is pretty interesting deck, not going to lie. Though there are a few things about it that you could improve the deck with...

First of all is ramp, Mono-white absolutely sucks with ramp I know, especially with getting an 8 drop like Avacyn out, of course stuff like Land Tax and Archaeomancer's Map are good options, they may be a bit on the pricy side. Fortunately stuff like Burnished Hart, Solemn Simulacrum, and Monologue Tax exist and are relatively light on the budget, Knight of the White Orchid and Keeper of the Accord are also good options for mono-white to help get her out sooner. Also, since artifacts are the main source of ramp for mono-white, why not slip in Thran Dynamo, Gilded Lotus, or Semblance Anvil?

Secondly, there is a lot of removal in this deck, namely single target removal. Avacyn loves boardwipes and similar effects over single target removal as she can protect her allies from them. Worldslayer and Nevinyrral's Disk are great non-sorcery forms of boardwipe that work wonders for Avacyn and Fated Retribution can be quite the surprise. Speaking of, Vanquish the Horde and Hour of Revelation are very strong boardwipes in commander considering the chance you can cast them for cheap is very often. Also, since Avacyn will be a big target to everyone, consider adding in Swiftfoot Boots for redundancy with Lightning Greaves.

Next, the angels. For the most part, these are some pretty good choices, but there are a few issues I can see. Restoration Angel and Angel of Glory's Rise are the biggest whiffs in the deck. As of current, the only human/non-angel creature in your deck they could target/effect (excluding tokens) is Starnheim Aspirant, not bad, but both of these prefer to be in non-angel tribal decks, namely flicker and human tribal decks respectively. Aside from them, look through your angels and note any beatsticks, or angels that only exist just to hit face, and consider removing them, three of them that come to mind are Serra Angel, Seraph of Dawn, and Baneslayer Angel. Consider changing them out for angels like Angel of the Dire Hour, Herald of War, Emeria Shepherd, Serra's Emissary, or Angel of Serenity as they provide utility in addition to being a beatstick. Also consider switching Akroma, Angel of Wrath out for Akroma, Vision of Ixidor for some added oomph for your angels.

Your lands are also pretty solid, but you aren't running anything that can take advantage of all of those snow lands. You have The Book of Exalted Deeds, why not slip in Faceless Haven that can, technically, become an angel and thus receive the book's effects? Speaking of, Search for Glory and Scrying Sheets are great cards with these snow lands as one can tutor out either a snow land or a legendary card while the other works well with Herald's Horn. Emeria, The Sky Ruin is basically free recursion in mono-white while War Room and Bonders' Enclave are nice card draw options in a color that lacks it.

Intro

  • Hm it doesnt seem to have a consistent plan nor a legit format. I would suggest to go for modern since it has a lot of cards in its pool and is the most common 60 cards format besides standard. I am an Angels Deck builder since 6 years, so i have a couple of suggestions. Of course that doesnt mean that you have to change something, i mean it is just a suggestion and all the mentioned cards wont fit anyway in a 60 cards deck. Try to make it more consistent if needed by playing 4-of or tutor effects.

  • Since you mentioned your friend plays burn, i will give you some cards that will make your winrate nearly 100% against burn. Burn has barely no chance against lifegain decks. Angels can be build in a lifegain way, which i am personally no fan of but many are, so here we go.

  • If you want to check out a non lifegain modern Angel deck, you can check out Devotion to White Angels.

Board wipes that seem "on theme" and white "ramp" to consider. Queen Marchesa doesn't have a clear single way to build so you have lots of options. However, I feel like said you want to play her like the Kween she is and create a royal court full of politicin' and group interaction to make all the boys whine. I don't think you want to discourgage people from taking the monarch from you, more encourage them to swing others IE: NO Ghostly Prisons, YES Teysa effects. Punish the ones who swing you only after the fact and reward the ones who swing others. There is a lot listed!
