Plaguemaw Beast Discussion

Great deck, this gives me ideas of building a version of it myself. I was having a hard time wondering how to put a Hapatra deck together until I read your primer.

Thank you.

How do you feel about Plaguemaw Beast ?

Doubling Season is amazing but far outside of my budget sadly. It costs almost as much as this whole deck does!

Contagion Engine is likewise expensive. I like Plaguemaw Beast , I even have one here, but do you have a recommendation on what to take out for it?

Skullclamp is interesting, but seems a bit redundant and expensive. It also doesn't fit the theme of my deck sadly.

This seems like a very budget friendly list so I apologize if some of my suggestions are too expensive.

Doubling Season is a perfect card for Ghave: more counters and more tokens!

Proliferate is also a great keyword for a deck like this so I would suggest Contagion Engine and Plaguemaw Beast .

Skullclamp is a drawing powerhouse when you have plenty of saprolings laying about so I would highly suggest its inclusion.

Ooh, have you considered Loyal Guardian , Pir, Imaginative Rascal and Ezuri, Claw of Progress ? Possibly Ivy Lane Denizen as well... Some creature-based proliferate effects (such as Plaguemaw Beast or Thrummingbird ) might not go amiss!

I really like the idea of Animar creature-based Voltron; it's a fresh take on the commander that I've never considered before!

If you're looking for stronger ramp, you can upgrade the Golgari artifacts and some of the random non-elf creatures into Elves of Deep Shadow, more Llanowar Elves, Elvish Mystic or Golgari Signet.

If you go further down the elf-ramp path, you can start playing more synergistic cards like Masked Admirers, which you can sacrifice to Vraska the Unseen's ability and get back later. Deathtouch creatures in general work well with the other Vraskas, blocking very well and needing to be blocked when you get close to ultimate territory.

If you're trying to ultimate as quickly as possible, Doubling Season is expensive (but also probably the cheapest it's been in years right now) but irreplaceable. With that on the battlefield, if you resolve any planeswalker it comes in with twice the counters, often letting you ultimate immediately. The proliferate route, while keeping your Vraska's protected, is next-best. Clasp is a great card, and Plaguemaw Beast could be a synergistic consideration.

The best way to protect a planeswalker once it's on the battlefield is by removing your opponent's threats, and this deck could use some pieces of removal broader than Naturalize. Putrefy or Status / Statue is a terrific budget alternative to something like Assassin's Trophy or Maelstrom Pulse, while Cast Down is a cheap way to take down most creatures. Ravenous Chupacabra kills a creature while leaving a body on the board to attack, block, or get sacrificed to be brought back with Golgari Findbroker and such. Find / Finality does double duty of recurring your creatures when your planeswalkers aren't being threatened, and wiping the board when you're behind.

As for keeping your planeswalkers in steady supply if you're pinched due to literal supply, Nature's Spiral is a good addition. Yawgmoth's Vile Offering is another very powerful alternative, but you would likely need to run many more legendary creatures in order to consistently cast it. Some options: Ishkanah, Grafwidow, Kalitas, Traitor of Ghet, Izoni, Thousand-Eyed, Isareth the Awakener, Marwyn, the Nurturer (who is also terrific ramp if you go the Elf route), Liliana, Heretical Healer  Flip, Rishkar, Peema Renegade (who also is great with your proliferate effects), or my personal favorite Gonti, Lord of Luxury.

TheRedGoat: Thanks for the thoughts/suggestions! The only pieces that care about -1 counters being on the creature when they die are Necroskitter and Blowfly Infestation - the former may get cut, and the latter mostly sticks stuff on my own creatures (so it's not a problem really). The deck mostly cares about the -1 placement itself :)

And regarding your suggestions - Plaguemaw Beast is interesting, but I'm not super convinced that it's worth the 5 mana and waiting for summoning sickness to wear off... Poison-Tip Archer isn't really worth the 4 mana to me, though I could see it fitting into my sideboard for the additional usefulness of having reach (this deck struggles with fliers). Driven / Despair is actually something I want to fit back into the deck when I find space for it (it may replace Necroskitter)! Rishkar, Peema Renegade just seems like a less good version of Cryptolith Rite here, another card I'm trying to fit in (too few slots, bleh). Quillspike recently got cut because he was too fragile, dies from a single counter, and is only really useful with Devoted Druid. Flourishing Defenses is just too much mana for its effect, unfortunately. Harbinger of Night just got cut - he was just too slow and tended to cause problems. Blight Sickle is not efficient enough, in my opinion (I'd rather run Glistening Oil, ANOTHER possible inclusion), and while Hex Parasite is cute against opposing PWs and maybe could find a home in the sideboard, he doesn't advance my game plan enough to put him in the main deck.

Thank you again for the suggestions! :)

So I have a question: How well does this deck interact with +1/+1 counters being placed on creatures? Or having -1/-1 counters removed before the creatures die?

Also, a lists of cards that could be useful (unknown if you already knew about these or play tested them)(would still want to hear your thoughts on them within a deck):

Plaguemaw Beast (sac-a-snake, make-a-nest)

Poison-Tip Archer (redundant win-con is redundant)

Driven Despair (aggro?)

Rishkar, Peema Renegade (any counter counts)

Quillspike (known combo piece)

Flourishing Defenses (see "aggro?")

Harbinger of Night (recommend pair with Melira, Sylvok Outcast )

Blight Sickle (once again, aggro?)

Hex Parasite (political tool)

Tawnos, Urza's Apprentice works how you think it does. You know of you had Mycosynth Lattice in play Tawnos, Urza's Apprentice and a plainswaker you can copy the plainswaker ability with Tawnos, Urza's Apprentice because the walkers an artifact now. You could do the same with Liquid Metal Coating...

Also with Plaguemaw Beast in play and Thornbite Staff and any good token generators like Elspeth, Sun's Champion you can proliferate the shit out of your walkers...

Also also if your walkers are artifacts from liquid metal coating you can animate your planeswalkers with Karn, Silver Golem then equip them with Helm of the Host to create a non legendary token copy of your Walker as though it has not been activated yet... bug that's if you're trying to live the dream
