Mortlocke on New hubs to be added

2 years ago

Hello legendofa,

I propose a new hub to be added: Phyrexian. During Modern Horizons 2, 225 creatures were retconned into having the Phyrexian creature subtype to join Vorinclex, Monstrous Raider . Additionally, there were a smattering of Enchantments, Artifacts and etc that ether have the Phyrexian subtype or create creature tokens that do. Thanks to this retcon I now have a deck that has a Phyrexian tribal theme. For your reference, below is a full list of spells that were affected by WotC's Phyrexian errata.

This is... pretty fantastic. May need more Dromoka, the Eternal (easily the second most devastating Dragonlord, in my opinion) and possibly Utvara Hellkite, Heirloom Blade, and absolutely Drogskol Captain, maybe Stromkirk Captain. Urza's Incubator, Obelisk of Urd, maybe Captivating Vampire, Battletide Alchemist, a Banneret (ie Bosk Banneret), Knight Exemplar, Gilt-Leaf Archdruid (which may not seem that great but at very least it's an additional Kindred Discovery), the mercenaries (ie Cateran Brute, Moggcatcher, Rathi Assassin) Pheres-Band Warchief, the harbingers (ie Flamekin Harbinger, Treefolk Harbinger).

Your mana issue is simply that you don't have enough land. Without being in green, or having an extremely bottom-heavy curve, you should never go below 33 lands on principle, and rarely go below 35 without high-level mana rocks like Mana Crypt & Mana Vault or lands like Ancient Tomb. Additionally, lands that come into play tapped for little value like Skyline Cascade, Mortuary Mire, Halimar Depths, Ebon Stronghold, and Bottomless Vault would better serve you as basics. If you're not proliferating, a storage land like Ebon Stronghold isn't very good. I understand that you want to store up mana for your big spells, but imagine if you ran Ashnod's Altar instead. With all the zombie tokens you can make, it's much better acceleration that doesn't tie down a land for several turns. Corpse Harvester can also turn your tokens or otherwise expended zombies into ramp and tutor for more relevant zombies.

Sleep, Ghoulcaller's Chant, Ashiok, Painful Quandary, Followed Footsteps(note 1), Infernal Tribute, Royal Assassin(note 2), Posessed Skab, and Stuffy Doll are all easy cuts for either being off-theme, or inefficient when playing EDH. Manalith and Searchlight should probably become Charcoal Diamond and Sky Diamond, while Thaumatic Compass becomes Dimir Signet. Finally, the biggest change would be putting Scarab God as the General. While Grim-Grin can be powerful and close games out by hitting 21 damage quite quickly, the scry that scarab god gives you when you're playing zombie tribal is unreal. Plus he's so resilient and dodges the increasing casting cost by returning to your hand. These two points are especially relevant when we consider that your main complaint is being on the losing end of mana variance.

n1: If you really need the Followed Footsteps effect, just use Helm of the Host, it's better in almost every respect. n2: Unless you meant Rathi Assassin or Stronghold Assassin, which are both zombies.

I play a casual blue black that utilizes a lot of "freeze/stall" spells as I like to call them. Creatures like Frost Lynx, Watertrap Weaver, and Fogwalker; Harbinger of the Tides. Enchantments such as Malfunction, Ice Over, and Claustrophobia. Play instants like Send to Sleep, Chilling Grasp, and Ojutai's Breath. As far as black...Deathstroke, Assassinate, Royal Assassin, Rathi Assassin, Stalking Assassin, Murderous Compulsion. Throw some nasty flyers in the mix and you're sure to piss off your friends.

@Bovine073 , thanks for posting.

Mercenary Knight would certainly work well in a madness oriented deck, but since the only self-discarding spell I play is himself (not even 4 copies; only 3 and after getting one to my hand, I would search the rest of the copies directly with Rathi Assassin from the battlefield). So I'd got stucked with the madness cards, having to fully pay for them by their converted mana cost (which is usually super expensive, as a drawback for it's madness ability).

As for Dark Ritual, which I've already tested, it kinda helps with the "I have some high-mana cost big boys" but it doesn't help too much at accelerating my drops, since it boosts my pool only for a turn. I need permanent mana sources to be able to activate Rathi Assassin's, Silent Assassin's, Cateran Overlord's, Cateran Enforcer's and/or Rathi Intimidator's abilities (twice if Thousand-Year Elixir is on).So if I don't get Sol Ring on my starting hand, I'll just throw controll uppon the enemy: Duress, Dash Hopes, Grasp of Darkness.Good advice though, thanks again!

PS: I was just taking a look into your deck and saw a big flaw you should look into as soon as you can.
