Nettlecyst

Artifact — Equipment

Living weapon (When this equipment enters the battlefield, create a 0/0 black Phyrexian Germ creature token, then attach this to it.)

Equipped creature gets +1/+1 for each artifact and/or enchantment you control.

Equip (: Attach this to target creature you control. Equip only as a sorcery. This enters the battlefield unattached and stays on the battlefield if the creature this card is attached to leaves the battlefield.)

Infatuated_Amnesiac on Zirda doesn't like Nettlecyst?

I've been brewing a deck, recently added Zirda, the Dawnwaker as a companion and moved cards accordingly to meet the requirement of all permanents having an activated ability. But the deck marks Nettlecyst in red as not meeting that requirement.

Is it special? Does it's equip cost not count as an activated ability/am I missing something?

Thank you for your time and patience!

SaberTech on Zurtron

If you are going for a Voltron style of Zur there are a few auras that are often seen in those sorts of lists:

Darksteel Mutation and Oubliette complement Imprisoned in the Moon as ways that neutralize commanders. They make it difficult for your opponents to immediately get their commanders back to recast if they don't have enchantment removal. Darksteel Mutation is much better than Kasmina's Transmutation because the indestructible that the Mutation gives means that the enchanted commander will live through a board wipe and not go back to its owner's command zone. Oubliette could replace Pendrell Flux.

There's a bit of a call to make between Flaming Fist and Battle Mastery. Flaming Fist won't trigger the turn Zur puts it into play because Zur will have already been declared as attacking at that point. However, Flaming Fist does stick around if Zur happens to die since it's not an aura. Battle Mastery will let Zur hit with double strike the turn it enters but dies with Zur. It's a call to make depending on how aggressive you want to be. Duelist's Heritage is also generally better than Flaming Fist but not if Zur has shroud from a card like Diplomatic Immunity, so that depends on what auras you choose to run in the end.

If you aren't running Stony Silence as a silver bullet to shut down opponents' artifacts then it could be worth considering Nettlecyst as another creature/pump effect in the deck, even if Zur can't tutor it up. It could potentially replace Gray Merchant of Asphodel since the current list doesn't look that geared to reliably get a big hit off the Merchant's ability.

One of Zur's biggest strengths though is that he can tutor up Necropotence, so that's a card you should aim to add as soon as you can get your hands on one.

Rest in Peace is a strong card for messing with decks that utilize the graveyard.

Back to Basics can punish decks with greedy mana bases.

Stroke of Midnight is better than Expose to Daylight.

Seal of Cleansing or Aura of Silence are targets for Zur to tutor up to get rid of enchantments and artifacts.

Sevinne's Reclamation and/or Sun Titan could be worth considering for getting key permanent cards back from your graveyard.

Personally, I would cut:

  • Daxos, Blessed by the Sun - He's a glorified blocker

  • Avacyn, Angel of Hope - indestructible is nice but especially if you go down the graveyard combo route you don't really care. And that mana cost.

  • Rune-Tail, Kitsune Ascendant  Flip - There are better cards if you really care about this effect but I feel like this card is in the deck only because it's legendary

  • Nettlecyst - If you're looking at churning through tokens, this card isn't as good as if you're just amassing them. And I think you want to be benefiting from cracking food

  • At least one of your wrath effects - you have a lot and you don't need that many, especially if you're trying to make the deck faster

  • Loran, Disciple of History -I'm on the fence about this one - if you wanted to lean into Myr Retriever like artifact combo stuff then keep it, otherwise Sammy-boi already does this enough.

  • Karametra, God of Harvests - You need more dorks to make her work. If you wanna add more cards like Llanowar Elves, Avacyn's Pilgrim, Elvish Mystic etc. then keep her, but right now she doesn't do enough. She's also always been a catch 22 card and I think unless you build around her, she hinders more than helps.

  • Mirari's Wake - you're not really a lands themed deck and if you go down the graveyard loops then you'll wanna add Skullclamp. And dumb as this might sound, antheming your creatures can disable clamp's value.

In general, I think you need to pick between leaning into the lands effects (which is doable but will require some reworking) or going for food token artifact engines. The deck is currently sitting in this awkard spot where it kind of does both but doesn't do either well. And that will probably help cutting some cards.

1st off. Is this combo how you truly plan to win.

T5 play a enchantment. T6 add counter t7 make smoug and win assuming Torbran and a sac outlet is on the field.

I think it's kinda clunky for modern. Here are a few ideas not necessarily better but tryingtoget more synergy where possible or give a win withouta 3 card combo:

Go rb for more discard interaction and cards like Mayhem Devil to win/ profit from sacs

Run Grinding Station and sac each token with untap trigger on the stack to mill 42 cards. Probably your opp deck

Go affinity like with Arcbound Ravager and or Nettlecyst

Or run Magda, Brazen Outlaw treasure creation and tutoring a dragon/ artifact to play big creatures like Hellkite Tyrant should win quickly. If not on upkeep

Mechanized Production enchant treasure win on upkeep

Pinging like Reckless Fireweaver or Disciple of the Vault Marionette Master

Wow. Proper card analysis Rasaru!

I haven't taken this deck for a spin since last summer but I clocked in a lot of games.

A. Storm-Kiln Artist This is not a spellslinger list but I thought the few instants/sorceries would create mana. It made 1 or 2 maybe 3 treasure. Your suggestion of The Reaver Cleaver is the perfect replacement.

B. Nettlecyst was really strong. Puts Bane easily on a two turn clock sometimes one and done. Your suggestion of Sword of Forge and Frontier is too good not to include so I will find another cut.

C. Great Furnace + Goblin Welder is one of those simple synergies that makes me love MTG. I'm going to keep it in. That said, you are right about upping the snow-covered mountains for Valakut triggers and your assessment of the other non-basics.

D. Endless Atlas was made for mono Red, White and Boros. Going to continue running it for now but Seize the Spoils seems really good and I'm already running Big Score so why not?

E. Wow... neat! I'm already running Soul's Fire and Chandra's Ignition, Surestrike Trident seems very appropriate.

Thanks for spitballing ideas. I'm going to update based off your analysis and test again.

How has the deck been playing recently? Any weaknesses to note?

I absolutely love this deck list, but have a couple of questions and/or suggestions for you.

A. It looks like you have a total of 16 instants/sorceries. Do you ever have an issue with producing treasures with Storm-Kiln Artist? It's an excellent card, but I'm unsure (since I haven't played this list) that you would get enough value here. In it's place you could play something fun like Kazuul's Toll Collector or something that helps you cheat equip costs like Brass Squire. Imagine paying only 3 mana to play a creature, then immediately attaching 3-4 equipment to it for free! lol

B. Although I've played my share of Nettlecyst, I think you have some better options here. It has the opportunity to pump your commmander a great deal, if you're able to take advantage of your treasure generation and get some equipment on the battlefield. But what happens when you play this after all your artifacts get destroyed or exiled? I think in the long term, you'd get more value out of Sword of Forge and Frontier and/or The Reaver Cleaver. The sword costs the same, provides protection, card advantage and has the ability to pump your commander by playing additional lands. While the Reaver Cleaver is not only on theme, but helps put treasures back onto the battlefield, pumping your commander and progressing your Hellkite Tyrant alt win-con strategy.

C. I have some suggestions on your landbase

Great Furnace -> Snow-Covered Mountain - "2008-04-01: A permanent that’s more than one of these types (such as an artifact creature) counts only once." So an artifact land would only pump Bane by 1/1. Ditch this land for another snow-covered mountain to increase your chances of utilizing Valakut, the Molten Pinnacle in the mid/end game.

Darksteel Citadel -> Snow-Covered Mountain - See above comment

Sokenzan, Crucible of Defiance -> Snow-Covered Mountain - I appreciate that this can make blockers (Bane should be the only attacker you care about), but cards like Bedlam make them irrelevant. Let's add a snow-mountain to continue to improve our Valakut, the Molten Pinnacle potential.

Cathedral of War -> Command Beacon - Bane is going to be a target. Why bust treasures, when you can just send him to your hand and cast him for way less.

Bonders' Enclave -> Valakut Awakening  Flip - besides your commander (who is going to be a major target), you only have 4 other creatures with 4+ power. You don't want to have to spend mana to equip something, just so you can turn around and spend 4 more mana, to draw a card. This mdfc offers at least 1 card, for 1 less (floor), which is already better.

D. While, Endless Atlas can stick around for awhile, I think (maybe) you might get more immediate value from Seize the Spoils. It's only once, and yes it's sorcery speed, but you get 2 cards immediately, 2 treasures to pump Bane, and can feed your graveyard, giving Goblin Engineer and Goblin Welder more targets.

E. A fun card you could consider, and is a pet card of mine, is Surestrike Trident. It's so fun to watch people's faces when this hits the battlefield and they read what it does :D

Have you thought about using some 0 mana artifacts? Ornithopter will still have flying when they make it a creature. If you add Ornithopter, you could probably throw in Cranial Plating (it doesn't need Black, it just gets better with it), and that card also likes Vault Skirge, which sounds pretty sweet if you can make it big, it'll still have Flying and Lifelink. If you care about toughness a lot, there is also Nettlecyst, which I think just got a reprint. It's openly not very janky, but if you think you'll need cards there is also Thought Monitor, it's usually considered much better than Thoughtcast, but many want more than 4 of the effect.

Final thought, if you end up using 0 or 1 mana creatures, you can throw in stuff like Springleaf Drum or Moonsnare Prototype, some artifact decks use them for ramp.

Blackheart426

Tajuru Preserver is already there. One of the first pieces I put in! Nothing worse that running a tron deck and been beaten by some edict effect.

Thanks for the suggestion of Nettlecyst. I personally prefer equipment/enchantments that have stand alone effects and don't need other cards to function well. So although the ceiling might be amazing in some games, in others it could potentially be 5 mana for just a +1/+1 buff.
