Master Splicer Discussion

abby315 on Meren to Nethroi

The above comment about sums it up for me, unless you were planning to take it in a combo or other kind of direction! Here are some good Nethroi targets that have low power but make tokens or have good effects when they enter:

Biogenic Ooze Blade Splicer Master Splicer
Maul Splicer
Sensor Splicer
Noosegraf Mob
Chittering Witch
Creakwood Liege
Akroan Horse
Pentavus
Deep Forest Hermit
Deranged Hermit
Nut Collector
Duplicant
Geist-Honored Monk
Ghave, Guru of Spores
God-Eternal Oketra
Hornet Queen
Izoni, Thousand-Eyed
Tendershoot Dryad
Trostani Discordant Trostani's Summoner

Most of the above cards create creature tokens, so you'll probably want the usual: Doubling Season, Anointed Procession, Parallel Lives if you include a lot of them.

Here are some 0-power utility creatures to consider, because they're free to reanimate if they get killed:

Arboreal Grazer
Birds of Paradise
Devoted Druid
Incubation Druid
Faeburrow Elder
Custodi Soulbinders
Embodiment of Agonies
Fertilid
Golgari Grave-Troll (also a great include because Dredge can fill your GY)

And you'll also want at least a few additional Mutaters in case you have Nethroi out and want to trigger it again:

Cubwarden
Auspicious Starrix
Cavern Whisperer
Gemrazer
Dirge Bat
Mindleecher
Migratory Greathorn
Necropanther
Sawtusk Demolisher

...all seem like good includes.

Hope this gives you a good place to start and a list of interesting cards to consider. Many are very affordable. Now I kinda want to make a Nethroi deck.

Have fun!

This is a super neat deck, I love your choice of Venser; what you're doing with Master Splicer looks terrifying! Justiciar's Portal might be interesting as a signature spell, as it can turn your creatures into powerful blockers to protect Venser if he is attacked.

To preface this comment: Tinkering with different cool cards is what deck builders do, and I know that. My comment will, however, be based on possibly making the deck more competitive.

I feel like you're really missing out if you're playing Silverwing Squadron and Master Splicer. I like the concept with them, but you don't get the attack trigger from squardon, and splicer doesn't get you a ton of bang for your buck. I might recommend Charming Prince or Elite Guardmage. These would help with aggro matchups to slow them down.

I also think that going down on Legion Warboss is a choice is a mistake. You really want the turn 3 warboss into a t4 Winota. I can see that you took them out in your revisions, but I personally really like the card. 4 of these would help with control and ramp matchups to aggro them out or outvalue them.

I also think that Gingerbrute is an odd choice. There are a few reasons why this card is really good, but I don't believe you really want it in this deck. I would err more towards a way to get multiple triggers on Winota.

I like the Chandra, Acolyte of Flame as a way to create tokens or recast raise the alarm. I like Teferi, Time Raveler as protection during your burst turns as well as a way to bounce back etb cards like Agent of Treachery, or if you choose to run it, Charming Prince.

The sideboard really depends on meta, so that's up to you. Main things to keep in mind if you're on Arena post-Platinum is that you'll be going up against a lot of fires and control decks in Bo3, and a lot of fires and sacrifice decks in Bo1.

Good luck with brewing! I really like the potential that Winota has, and I'm interested to see where a deck like this goes post rotation without Agent of Treachery.

I agree about that a bit. In the current list i'm playing i've gone down to 2 Master Splicer. Ideally you want your 4th drop to be winota, be he's there if she's not. He's won me a few games when I've failed to find winota. He's in the list for two main reason, He buffs Silverwing Squadron for 2 extra dmg when you're going for a turn four OTK. The second reason, he's there for attrition, If you can't find winota, he gives you a 4-5 body to help you stall out... It's worth pointing out that Gingerbrute is also a golem and gets buffed by splicer.

I'll have to break this deck out into two separate lists, one for BO1 and BO3

The earliest version of this list ran 4 Haazda Marshal, but they've been phased out, they we're doing it, and having a 1 drop haster that be put on board the same turn as winota was better for the slot during drawn out games. Putting in smaller humans that can be targets isn't ideal, you want small non-humans and humans that outright end the game.

As far as splicer though, getting two on board with a at least one gingerbrute is 3 pseudo unblockable dmg every turn while you sit back and body with two 5/5 golems. It's never ideally, but the added attrition has helped. I'm updating with the current iteration now.

Master Splicer seems a bit slow and out of place. Trying to cast it normally without a Winota trigger seems to always put me off curve. When I have been play testing this deck, it's always the first card I sideboard out. Maybe cutting it and looking for another human instead like Ardenvale Tactician that way you could send use it for its adventure spell first. Also, maybe a card like Bounty Agent would give you more utility against all of the legendary creatures coming in Ikoria. Apostle of Purifying Light might make for a good sideboard against black. Maybe even cards like Fervent Champion, Fresh-Faced Recruit, Ghor-Clan Wrecker, Haazda Marshal, Hero of Precinct One, or Inspiring Captain might help you curve out a stay aggressive a little better than some of your other choices like Agent of Treachery. Just suggestions.

No Eldrazi Displacer? It synergies with every ETB in the deck and also stalls a bunch. Also I like using Master Splicer in my variant: http://tappedout.net/mtg-decks/19-01-20-eldrazi-and-taxes/

I enjoyed the article, nicely written as always.

Obviously there are too many Lords for you to list them all, but my personal favorite are the Splicers (Blade Splicer, Master Splicer, Maul Splicer, Sensor Splicer, Vital Splicer, and Wing Splicer).

I think they're really flavorful (roboticists who specialize in working on golems, can apply their specialty to any golem, and who always bring one from the shop whenever they show up) and fun to build around. They're a strong example of what I most love about Lords.

Cards that are over $1 that are auto-includes:

  • Mulldrifter , which can easily be cast for 3 mana if you blink in response to the evoke trigger;

Cards that are probably too mechanically complicated for this playgroup: - Fiend Hunter and Leonin Relic-Warder can be used to permanently exile if you blink in response to their ETB triggers.

Cards that should go in: - Twilight Shepherd - your creatures never die! - Phyrexian Ingester - BUUUURP. Also should go in Yasova Dragonclaw. - Displace is a cheaper Ghostly Flicker for creatures only. - Pondering Mage is a great 5-drop for this deck. - Master Splicer is a cheap thing to flicker to get an army.

Cards that should go in for redundancy if I have to remove Brago:

Mean: - Tempest Caller flickered means nobody else attacks.

Cards that are not going in:
