Hey keizerbuns, I like your deck! I’m not sure if you are on a budget, but I have a few suggestions you may like:

I would move the Surgical Extraction to the sideboard and drop the Cathedral Membrane and Phyrexian Arenas. In their place I would run 4 Street Wraith for “free” drawing and include 4 Thoughtseize to preemptively remove threats.

I would also include at least 2 Bitterblossom on the sideboard to boost your defensive capabilities against decks with flyers. I don’t see any creature removal in the 75. You may want to make room for a few Dismember too.

As far as first decks go, this is really solid. Defenders and hydras have a lot of synergy and mono colour keeps the mana simple.

There are a few options to play with- remembering that power gaming with a casual playgroup is usually a mistake. Aim to be fun for everyone.

Turn 1 plays are really important in modern: Portcullis Vine Cathedral Membrane or Jaddi Offshoot are all cute here.

There are a few infinite combos with mana+untap in defender, but it's usually not too fun.

In general terms, when you onlu have one deck try for card variety with a consistent core -12 to 16 4 ofs that do one thing and make the deck reliable (defender ramp) and some varied payoffs to keep it interesting. I like Mistcutter Hydra for haste, Squall Line to tie games and Uncage the Menagerie to fetch those low cmc hydras or backup ramp.

Ok looking this build over in some more detial you have Axebane Guardian but missing the Overgrown Battlement for even more mana ramp. I also think you should put in Fog Bank it is great card for just holding the line but would not be one of your attackers

Geist of the Archives lets you scry 1 at upkeep and another one to look at Ludevic's Test Subject  Flip you can transform it when you are ready by spending mana on counters then goes from am 0/3 wall to a 13/13 trample Horror just a few options

Cut Alluring Siren, Belligerent Brontodon, Cathedral Membrane(wont block), Fog Bank(cant deal damage), Guardians of Akrasa, Jaddi Offshoot, Kami of False Hope, Majestic Myriarch, Primal Clay, Thing in the Ice  Flip, The Chain Veil, Doubling Season (Unless you add way more counter/token stuff)

I'd probably run Amaranthine Wall, Assault Formation (For when Arcades isnt around and the +0/+X boost), Guard Gomazoa (since he cant die in combat), Hornet Nest (for tokens and he can be very efficient), Mnemonic Wall (to get back a wrath), Psychic Membrane (if you plan on blocking its awesome), Sprouting Phytohydra, Sunscape Familiar (cause duh), Walking Archive, Wall of Frost (big and a good blocker), Wall of Mulch (value off of an enemy wrath), Wall of Omens, Wall of Roots.

Also Quest for Renewal, to block with them,Sight of the Scalelords or anything to give all vigilance, maybe even Aggressive Mammoth, or something to grant all trample
