My personal list of top six commanders in each color. The threshold of six came from the necessity of including six great green commanders (I thought five would be unfair and probably leave a strong commander out).

That, obviously, had it's consequences on the rest of the list, since not all color combinations accommodate this properly. This lead to some subpar choices but, overall, the list is a solid guide and delivers what it promises. I also added a personal preference category, comprising, mostly, of what didn't make the cut on each category (and what would make a good theme/gimmick deck).

I would also like to point out to the list of 50 most used commanders on mtgsalvation. It's from 2014: http://www.mtgsalvation.com/forums/the-game/commander-edh/548821-statistical-average-deck-for-the-50-most-popular

My friend vctr pointed out to a guy that utilizes The Gatherer to list all legends in their respective colors. This has the problem of overlooking the color identity of some notable commanders. Also, upon second look, the search isn't always precise. Anyhow, it's a good guide if you're not looking for a detailed search: https://mtghunter.wordpress.com/2011/03/01/legendary-creatures-colour-combinations/

If you're indeed looking for that, I recommend http://magiccards.info/ "advanced search".

+1 if you liked the list!
