Sidisi's Faithful Discussion

Cauldrath on Pioneer Teshar Combo

With the banning of Smuggler's Copter, I'm going to need to make some adjustments. My current thought is to replace them with Jace, Vryn's Prodigy  Flip, but the reduction in the artifact count means I probably need to replace Glint-nest Crane, as well. Currently considerations are Charming Prince , Vantress Gargoyle , Wall of Lost Thoughts , Chamber Sentry , and Sidisi's Faithful . There's also a lot of creatures, so it's probably worth splashing green for Collected Company and some of the creatures that search for more creatures/lands and dump the rest in the graveyard. Another thing to consider is throwing in Emry, Lurker of the Loch and Mox Amber to enable a theoretical turn 3 combo, but that would require getting really lucky.

Thanks for the detailed comment Hissp! It is very appreciated.

Truthfully, I have found Cabal Therapist to be minimally useful. Yes, it can reset yuriko, but really, what can't? I like the ideal of Sidisi's Faithful . I'll try it out soon as a more immediately impactful replacement.

I've been debating between Dispel and Abjure for this list. Just this last month I've been testing Abjure and it has been performing very well. Cheap, catch-all counters allow the deck to commit to the board more aggressively with less fear, and Abjure has been stellar at filling that role. I think I will officially make the switch.

Sakashima's Student , Mutavault , and Shizo, Death's Storehouse are all in my deck irl but I've somehow forgotten them on this list! You are absolutely right about Sakashima's Student , its a phenomenally versatile ninja. I'll update the list to reflect this.

Full disclosure, I'm not totally sold on Sakashima the Impostor . It tends to be a win more, and as you said, as its usually at its best when you are already in a good board position. I definitely wouldn't run both Sakashima and Spark Double . Its on the chopping block.

I've seen your list, and Entomb + Wonder / Filth looks spicy! I'm guessing the amount of mass-evasion a player will want will depend heavily on their meta composition. If playgroups tend to get clogged up on the ground, then these seems like great inclusions! I am lucky enough that I don't have a hard time connecting with ninjas (always at least one deck that commits minimally to the board), but I think it is great tech to have! That being said, the inclusion of more cheap changelings in Modern Horizons definitely raises my evaluation of cover of darkness.

Mission Briefing seems good. I keep telling myself that Snapcaster Mage is better in this list because he can be replayed with ninjutsu, but I have tended to undervalue scry (in this case surveil) in the past. I'll give this some testing. More brainstorming is always a good thing, and I suppose there is no reason why I couldn't run both.

And finally, Memnite and Phyrexian Walker for the win! (Seriously, every Yuriko player should have these 0-mana creatures in their arsenal).

Ok now that I've recovered from my initial excitement, a few questions / thoughts...

Have you run Sidisi's Faithful ? I recently cut Cabal Therapist as I didn't like it being dead the turn it came in. Curious on how you've found Therapist more useful so far.

My list runs slightly more ninjas and slightly fewer turns. While I understand not running the worst 3 ninjas with ninjutsu cmc <=3, I'm pretty surprised to see Sakashima's Student missing from your list. I've often found it to be the best ninja in the 99 (before Infiltrator was printed). Care to explain your reasoning?

I've found Mission Briefing particularly useful to flashback Brainstorm (or whatever else).

Mutavault has very little downside while putting in serious work on slower draws. Shizo, Death's Storehouse to a lesser but still notable extent.

We're also one of the few decks able to take advantage of Abjure ..!

A final question on how your deck's been running since Horizons. I've noticed in several games I'm yearning for mass-evasion. Maybe it's the metas I've seen, but adding, Wonder , Entomb , and Cover of Darkness to my list seems just barely (if still not quite) enough. How have you found things along this front? I'm also not running (never have) Sakashima the Impostor or Spark Double . They're 4-cost ninjas that aren't better than 2-cost ninjutsu cards unless you have 3 or more ninjas on board, in which case you're already in a good spot. Curious how you've found them so far. Also curious why you chose Sakashima over the Double.

Looking forward to hearing your thoughts!! So glad your list is the Yuriko list linked to the

Have you thought about Hardened Scales ? It seems like a better way to consistently add more counters to your creatures if that’s what you’re going for, and in the same vein Pir, Imaginative Rascal helps. Personally I’d put them in over one-shot effects like Hunting Triad . Also, Contagion Engine and Doubling Season are both very good value engines here, with the engine providing the added bonus of eventually removing opponent’s creatures. On top of that you can proliferate experience counters, so things like Karn's Bastion could be very potent. Personally, I think that Spawnwrithe , Whirler Rogue and Patagia Viper could easily be replaced by these effects. Also, have you considered running Chain of Vapor instead of or alongside Sidisi's Faithful ? It gives you the added benefit of permanent bounce and possibly putting your opponents a land behind if they choose to retaliate. Finally, Birds of Paradise could definitely replace Arbor Elf because you aren’t running things like Utopia Sprawl , so the color fixing and flying creature far outweigh the elf creature type for Priest of Titania . Sorry for the long message, just got a lot of ideas all at once. Good luck in the league, I’m playing Kami of the Crescent Moon as of now!

Obviously Modern Horizons threw a lot of changes into the list. In my current iteration I'm running 26 creatures + Mutavault :

My ninjitsu enablers are either free ( Memnite , Ornithopter , Phyrexian Walker ) or provide repeatable utility ( Cabal Therapist , Putrid Imp , Sage of Epityr , Sidisi's Faithful ). I don't prioritize evasion at all. I'm also running all 3 1-drop changelings ( Changeling Outcast , Mothdust Changeling ,{Universal Automaton})

I'm running every creature with a ninjitsu cost of 1 or 2 ( Azra Smokeshaper , Ingenious Infiltrator , Mistblade Shinobi , Ninja of the Deep Hours , Sakashima's Student , Skullsnatcher , Walker of Secret Ways ) as well as 3 more expensive ninjas that provide value ( Fallen Shinobi , Mist-Syndicate Naga , Throat Slitter )

The other creatures I'm running either provide incredible ETB value ( Gilded Drake , Spellstutter Sprite , {I would probably run Snapcaster Mage if I had one}) or facilitate team evasion ( Filth , Tetsuko Umezawa, Fugitive , Wonder .

And of course there's the Dragon Knife itself, Draco :D

Right off the bat, I think you should run Preordain . The card is very powerful, and I see it in your 'Maybeboard.' Second, I saw you replaced Anticipate with Sensei's Divining Top . This is a good idea, but if you're looking for more cantrip effects, Impulse is a strictly better Anticipate . Furthermore, looking at your deck's curve, you might want to consider running Counterbalance in conjunction with top -- I have had good results with that combo, particularly if running Zendikar and Onslaught fetches to clear the top. Azami's draw ability would do just as well though.

I don't think Halimar Depths is a very good card. Sage of Epityr is a one-drop wizard who does the same thing (slightly better, actually) and doubles as card-advantage later in the game. Siren Stormtamer is another good utility one-drop wizard, as is Sidisi's Faithful . (Note that Sidisi's Faithful can be tapped to draw a card while the exploit trigger is on the stack, and you can still have it exploit itself.) Generally any low-cost wizard that has a relevant ability is a good idea. Furthermore, cards like Intruder Alarm and Paradox Engine are your friend, as they make spells into spells plus draw 4 or 5.

Pairing Azami with Mind Over Matter then becomes an auto-win in conjunction with Jace, Wielder of Mysteries . For the record, Laboratory Maniac is a wizard, but I like your choice of Jace better. I think the Lab Man/Jace combos are likely a better way to win than wizard aggro.

Riptide Laboratory is a good way to protect your general.

Sapphire Medallion , which I see is also in the 'Maybeboard,' is also a good card. Mono-blue has little ramp, so any two-drop ramp is good. Same goes for Sky Diamond , Baral, Chief of Compliance and Coldsteel Heart . With more rocks, things like Aphetto Alchemist also get better (I strongly recommend playing him).

I do not recommend Portent . Half the time I use cantrips, I am using them to find a land or some other card I want to use immediately. The Ice Age slowtrips just don't fulfill that need.

Finally, I am not sure I think Arcane Lighthouse or Detection Tower are very good. It may be a meta-call, but I feel that Azami costing triple-blue means you want to run as few colorless lands as possible.

All the best and good luck! Azami was one of my pet decks when I used to play her.

I see that you usea a lot of expensive spells, sure they are cool but you need even more mana ramp, you can try Fertilid Sakura-Tribe Scout and for explosive tokens (experience counters) "maybe" Snake Basket or Fungal Sprouting Sure they are risky to use, but if you do not use counter spells I guess your game environment does not have much creature hate :D also if you are using Coiling Oracle the Wirewood Symbiote is a must! for card draw you can try the new: Beast Whisperer, imagine cast like 3 times in a row the Shrieking Drake X3 experience counters and cards! the sylvan library is a amazing addition..

cards to considerate: Spike Feeder gain lost of life, but is situational what you want is to attack. Fauna Shaman Throw your manadorks in late game and help you look for the hulk Spellskite good blocker at the beginning and help protect your ezuri Glen Elendra Archmage the philosophy of this deck is to win with fast and strong punches, but you need to protect your board while you build the experience counters, this car is expensive $ but it's worth every penny, it can make you win the game. Inkmoth Nexus infect support Edric, Spymaster of Trest maybe for card draw?

I don't see spot removal you can try some creatures whit bounce effect to buy time and build experience counters. AEther Adept, Man-o'-War Sidisi's Faithful even Venser, Shaper Savant

What to cut and why:

all the cards that cost more that five mana...just because they are to slow and predictable (except) Cyclonic Rift , at least cobra trap and protean hulk look's fun.

Lightning Greaves: amazing card but the shroud prevent you from putting counters on the equipped creature.

Glimmer of Genius: lot's of better card draw out there, the same to Fact or Fiction.¯_(?)_/¯

Phanharmonicon: cool card!! but slow :(

Broodhatch Nantuko: I do not feel that it is effective enough.
