"A horrible sight, yes, but the sounds . . . its twanging tendons and grinding gears are almost musical."

-Brudiclad, Telchor Engineer

Brudiclad

Before the mending, amongst the plane of New Phyrexia, was a mad engineer, an artificer, who experimented on the intelligent and sullen Myrs often construing new and different ideas that were bewildered by any other.

Brudiclad is known only from bizarre rifts in time that plagued Dominaria before the Mending that healed the land. In one of the possible futures from these rifts, Brudiclad exists as an engineer who melds flesh and metal in glorious harmony for his own wicked passions.

(Source).

Just as the Sarcomite Myr, with twanging tendons and grinding gears, this deck aims to be a horrifically musical sight by constantly twisting our tokens into some dangerous beasties.

When brewing with Brudy, we want to have machine-like synergy with bursts of tokens and enough resources to transform them. From these tokens we can choose from a large variety of creatures with 'when this creature attacks', 'when this creature dies', and other 'triggered' abilities to maximize the use of Brudy. Keep in mind, he gives our tokens haste, so we can be quite punchy, and we have ETB triggers from the Myr. This alone gives a whole slew of different brewing options. Within the nature of Brudiclad, there are several wicked ways to brew this decklsit. Over several iterations, I have personally grown fond of my current Polymorph version that always manages to keep tokens on the field with a threat looming in our library - or as I like to say, our rifts in time.

This Deck is For You if:

  • You're a token lover.
  • You want combat based wins, but with a twist.
  • You're all about artifacts and beefy creatures.
  • You love winning from out of nowhere
  • You, like Brudiclad, like to experiment wish flesh and metal.

This Deck is NOT for You if:

  • You're hoping to sling spells left and right.
  • You just don't vibe with my boy, Brudy.
  • You don't like keeping track of all the tokens. (There's a lot)

This deck must be balanced with what and are best at, and with what are best at. This includes essential control like Spell Swindle, explosive cards like Saheeli's Directive, and machine-like synergy such as Blinkmoth Urn.

As a more obvious guarantee, we'll be using a hefty amount of artifact ramp. There's a plethora of options when it comes to this, but these are what I've come to know and love with Brudy.

Let's start with some mild options...

Everflowing Chalice, Iron Myr, Commander's Sphere, Darksteel Ingot, Izzet Locket, Mind Stone, Powerstone Shard, Prismatic Lens, Sol Ring, Talisman of Creativity, Worn Powerstone, Thran Dynamo

...and slap on some spicy ones that pump this deck quite well, as artifacts do.

Gilded Lotus, Mana Crypt, Mox Opal, Chrome Mox, Mox Diamond, and even one of the best (imo) - Storm the Vault

Spot removal and player-to-player interactions are key components of any commander game. Being able to pick off your opponents key cards and board wipe when necessary is just a staple of every commander game. and give us some decent options and plenty of counterspells if that's what tickles your fancy.

My favorite counters that I DO include...

Mana Drain, Swan Song, Negate, and that classy Counterspell.

Spot removal is a strange thing in and but I've really enjoyed the types of games that come from the overall lack of counterspells. I like to include...

Chaos Warp, Reality Shift, Rapid Hybridization, Pongify, and the ever versatile Twincast.

If you choose the path of counterspells, you have my blessing; they are simply not my bread, nor my butter. Board wipes are few and far between with this iteration but I do currently include...

Blasphemous Act, Cyclonic Rift, and Vandalblast

I've often contemplated using All is Dust but I do create several colored tokens that I would prefer to NOT be blown up; and, of course, there are plenty of other options when it comes to board wipes...

Nevinyrral's Disk, Perilous Vault, Wash Out, and the ever-playful Warp World which works well when we only have 9 creatures.

Tutors can be a necessary evil to find those few cards that let your deck just go off. I minimize these the same way I do counterspells to insure that each game has a very different way of working.

Fabricate, Mystical Tutor, Solve the Equation made my list.

There's other big contenders that I think about such as Planar Bridge, Gamble, and even Merchant Scroll that could help us dive into our Polymorph type effects. It is these polymorph effects that are my #1 reason for using tutors in the first place. 9 times out of 10, I am using my Fabricate to find Proteus Staff and I am using Mystical Tutor to find Transmogrify and the like.

This is the most crucial part of the deck. The generators are either single token generators or burst generator. There needs to be a balance between the two types of generators with cards like Spell Swindle that help defend our board state and has the potential to pay for itself when used on a 5 CMC spell. I've managed to gather enough single token generators through various means that I usually don't need too many burst token generatation. I've recently been experimenting with Empty the Warrens and absolutely love the new include of Stolen by the Fae.

There are several burst generators to choose from...

Clone Legion, Kuldotha Rebirth, Hangarback Walker, Brass's Bounty, Dockside Extortionist, Hordeling Outburst, Master of Waves, even Myr Battlesphere

I really have grown fond of Stolen by the Fae, Tempt with Vengeance, and have been just testing out Empty the Warrens. For single generators there are simply too many to choose from for the tokens of you're choosing. Something to keep in mind is getting that sweet token copy of something scary for Brudy to play with.

Cackling Counterpart, Fated Infatuation, Flameshadow Conjuring, Quasiduplicate, Saheeli's Artistry, Rite of Replication, Saheeli, Sublime Artificer, Mystic Reflection, Theoretical Duplication, Jace, Mirror Mage, Karn, Scion of Urza

Our threats can consist of any creature that pairs well with Brudiclad, Telchor Engineer simply a great effect multiples of. I enjoy the inclusion of our threats that leave somebody behind if removed. This will usually guarantee that we have more tokens and resources to play with.

I have a beautiful single digit creature count of 6 (in the 99) that consists of...

Wurmcoil Engine, Sharding Sphinx, Utvara Hellkite, Phyrexian Triniform, Myr Battlesphere and. purely for lore reasons, Sarcomite Myr. It's fun to tell my opponent that when I polymorph theres is a 1 in 6 chance I just completely whiff. hahaha

Keeping to the spirit of Brudiclad, Telchor Engineer as a wicked artificer, I do enjoy the idea of Phyrexian Metamorph as an option for making a token of anything on the field but it often backfires if it becomes the result of a Polymorph

There's a plethora of creatures that are viable, especially if you don't want to break the bank.

Bane of Bala Ged, Darksteel Juggernaut, Broodbirth Viper, Malignus, even Angrath's Marauders or Stalking Vengeance.

This is the most creative aspect of Brudy where you can truly choose your favorite and non-legendary creatures of which to meld flesh and metal for your own wicked passions. The MAYBE BOARD contains a large THREAT COLLECTION that contains many different creatures that are super fun to have multiple armies of based on a variety of effects. Take a gander, and leave a comment if you can think of any other ones. ;)

Going infinite with Brudiclad is actually not too challenging but can warrant hate for the deck the more you do it; I do NOT run infinite combos but that doesn't mean you can't. Keep in mind that these are still very fragile interactions if either the token is removed prior, the original creature is removed before we get a token, or even if we simply lose Brudy Boy before we can go mend the infinite.

Infinite Turns

Brudiclad, Telchor Engineer + Timestream Navigator Infinite turns.

Infinite Combat

Brudiclad, Telchor Engineer + Combat Celebrant

Brudiclad, Telchor Engineer + Breath of Fury

Brudiclad, Telchor Engineer + Scourge of the Throne as long as you don't have the most life.

I choose to embrace the Polymorph mechanics and see each of the 9 creatures in our 99 as the main win conditions. There's plenty of ways to create a token, and therefore plenty of options to polymorph. Let's make a copy and swing wide. What are they gonna do, board wipe?

This deck runs into issues when you just can't hit your Polymorph or somebody successfully casts Bitter Ordeal for 9 and removes most of our threats. Aside from these, this has been my favorite commander for a long time now and I just love to see him work.

My hope, moving forward is to develop a versatile sideboard for my meta. I often run into Neheb, the Eternal, Edgar Markov, and even Zacama, Primal Calamity, all of which are very good at removing artifacts. There's even a couple mill decks around with Jeleva and Bruvac. Knowing how to combat these properly will only excel Brudy Boy into the next level.

Thanks to everyone for taking the time to read this far and all the input I have gathered from this community over time.

I have created a much more budget friendly version (~$100) with the same concepts listed here. It focuses on cheating creatures into play but utilizes much more budget-friendly threats, draw, token generation, and the like. Please, feel free to take a look.

Phyrexia

TL;DR

If I were to mention one thing about this deck that keeps me so entertained is the amount possible threats you can make several copies of. If you have a favorite creature that you think Brudy should have 10+ tokens of leave a comment and I'll add it to the Threat Collection. Thank you.

Hello,

I've made quite some changes in recent events. We recently got a spoiler for Vesuvan Duplimancy and holy crap I almost pooped in your pants this is so good.

  • This makes our removal spells like Rapid Hybridization or Pongify hit two-fold.

  • Creatures like Goldspan Dragon can no longer have a reason NOT to be included (and a note on this mofo, I usually try my best to play the game differently, in blue but no counters, using tokens but minimize treasures, etc. but gosh the power level of my playgroup has become quite high and this is just too good).

I've added Trail of Evidence and Academy Manufactor to really add to the burst tokens, but with Academy Manufactor I really need to make sure I have some sort of Clue/Treasure token output. This leads me to also now include Tamiyo's Journal. Much more token synergies that way.

I've also removed all hard counters like Mana Drain and Counterspell. In the original Primer description, they simply weren't to my tastes. I don't like having them in the deck. I currently run several 1 drop counters with specific purpose. Mostly, to protect my own board state. I can Suspend Brudiclad if I must. The bane of my existence is Merciless Eviction and Vandalblast which would typically be stopped only by Counterspell - but most of my board will be tokens regardless, let's cast Retract instead.

Oh, and Karn, Living Legacy is pretty good too.

Overall, I've made the use of tokens nigh inevitable and their limits boundless. Vesuvan Duplimancy make me cry for my enemies.
