Creature (87)

SPACE DANDY.

My buddies and I had a deck building challenge with the prompt to build an anime-themed deck. I decided to build around Space Dandy, choosing Volo, Itinerant Scholar to represent the main character Dandy and the anime's "alien-hunting" premise. Volo documents creature types, just like Dandy documents aliens. He's a Folk Hero and a dandy guy...in space.

Storm?

This is a Cloudstone Curio, Omniscience, and changeling deck.

!!!!!!!

Power-Level Adjustments: If I plan on playing more casual, I will sideboard Crystal Shard in to replace Curio. Curio is obviously better, but enables an "I-win-the-game" combo, which doesn't vibe well with casual commander (I highlight the combo in the next paragraph).

Same goes with Chakram Retriever (combo enabler). See the "Untap" Section.

!!!!!!!

To get the most out of Volo's Journal, I thought casting and recasting changelings would prove most effective. Cloudstone, Omniscience, and 2 nonartifact creatures give you infinite cast triggers - writing down enough names on the journal to draw your deck with Volo's ability, then winning with Aetherflux Reservoir.

The deck offers many ways to bounce creatures back to hand:
- Targeted bounce: Geistwave, This Town Ain't Big Enough, Run Away Together, Barrin, Tolarian Archmage, Vedalken Aethermage, Sink to Stupor, Otawara, Soaring City
- Mass bounce: Season of Weaving, Mists of Lorien
- Repeatable bounce: Dour Port-Mage, Riptide Laboratory
- MEGA bounce engines: Equilibrium, Cloudstone Curio
In a perfect world, I'd like to increase the amount of bounce available

Secondly, make the changelings cheap.
- Helm of Awakening
- Unesh, Criosphinx Sovereign
- Omniscience

But maybe you need help finding these pieces? Despite the decks absurd ability to draw well, there are just a few enchantment tutors: Moon-Blessed Cleric, and Lost Auramancers

Cast Trigger Love and other engine synergies:
- Ulamog, the Infinite Gyre: Blow up stuff.
- I've considered running more titans, making this deck a dedicated eldrazi deck...but I'm not there yet.
- ETBs. I can also bounce my ETB creatures to reuse their abilities, such as Loran of the Third Path.
- Stickers....What? I have flirted with the idea of including Wicker Picker and Park Bleater. Both can give tickets when you cast creature spells, and there are many stickers that offer LTB effects, as well as other random abilities that could find niche use. Not everyone appreciates stickers, so it could be a sideboard thing. PLus Unfinity's setting overlaps Space Dandy's setting. Space Beleren nearly made the cut (if only that card wasn't absultely garbage dog water...someday).

Volo has a tap ability that only gets better when activated multiple times.
- The deck include 7 one-to-one untappers (Like Vizier of Tumbling Sands, as well as 1 Chakram Retriever.

!!!!!!!!

Chakram Retriever will be removed for the same reason I took out Curio. It consistently leads to combo turns, which is no bueno for casual. Anything can replace it, really. If I want another untapper, I could slot in Tideforce Elemental or Marvin, Murderous Mimic.

!!!!!!!!

- Similarly, I have Intruder Alarm as the 9th untapper tucked away in the sideboard. If included, it'd arguably be the best card in the deck. Sadly, it combos with a ham sandwich, and the one time I played with it, I "accidentally" combo'd off on turn 4...and to add, Intruder alarm combos are most often undeterministic, because you can run out of creature fuel it. I plan on sliding it in whenever I matchup with powerlevel 8 decks - If this deck is even good enough to compete with that. We'll see!

!!!!!!!!

- Moreovoer, untap synergies offer incredibly awesome ramp packages: Lotus Field, Gilded Lotus, Thran Dynamo, Azorius Chancery and even Sol Ring are great targets to untap and retap.
- Mother of Runes makes for consistent protection.
- Weathered Wayfarer can find Lotus Field, Reliquary Tower, Academy of Ruins, or Hall of Heliod's Generosity.
- The One Ring is a slept on card (jk). Goes whacky with untap synergies.
- Shorikai, Genesis Engine, Sokrates, Athenian Teacher, Kwain, Itinerant Meddler, Loran of the Third Path, and Jace's Archivist all provide backup card draw
- Dour Port-Mage is a reusable bounce engine....missing the cut (well it wasn't really close), was Waterfront Bouncer, which could also serve as removal... but I don't like discarding, and I deemed it as unnecessary.

I really enjoy group hug effects. They allow me to get a good glimpse of other people's decks, while speeding up my strategy. Kami of the Crescent Moon, Kwain, Itinerant Meddler, and Scrawling Crawler. The latter is a backup wincon, being "Neckusaur-Lite", and is amplified by Jace's Archivist and Sokrates, Athenian Teacher, which can be abused through untap effects.
- All this group draw works great with Smothering Tithe

Speaking of Jace's Archivist, since we plan on drawing a boatload of cards (for examples sake let's say we have 25 cards in hand), we can repeat our '"windfall" strat until we draw our opponents out. We won't have to worry as much about drawing ourselves out because of Ulamog, the Infinite Gyre.

This deck draws so well and so fast that I included Psychic Corrosion to speed up a mill win strat - drawing 25 cards mills half a deck, so mill is a very achievable wincon.
- This "fill the graveyard" strat fuels Ghost Vacuum, a card that's mostly included in the deck for flavor, although having graveyard hate doesn't hurt.

Missed the cut:
- I like Folio of Fancies, but this is like the 110th card. I want to know of cards that synergize specifically with this card, as I'm aware that there are ways to break it. I would probably need to include an infinite mana combo to make this viable, which I could obtain if I keep in Intruder Alarm.
- Forced Fruition could also be fun. Plus the art is very Space Dandy, however this is ;like the 121st card - I'd definitely need to put a large emphasis on this strategy, maybe like 5 more cards on top of these, to make this card seem worth it. Unlikely.

Go Tall
- Shabraz, the Skyshark  . Pumps itself nicely, plus can give other humans/changelings flying.
- Proft's Eidetic Memory works well with my flyers, as well as make beefy blockers for pillow-forting.
- Speaking of flying. I believe there are 2 changelings that already have flying, plus Unesh, and possibly another card. Mirror Entity can be used situationally to pump these flyers and hopefully finish opponents off in the late game.

Missing the Cut:
- Dream Trawler is a worse version of Shabraz. It can add to the draw potential...but is that really needed?
- Knowledge is Power, Gives the Dream Trawler effect to your entire board.
- Cathars' Crusade and Vodalian Wave-Knight due to all of the potential etbs would work great...but I'd either like to go wide, or have more evasive creatures for these cards to seem worth. Besides, a lot of my creatures want to be bounced, so counters wouldn't do well.

Also missing the cut, but would add an easy mode:
- Instant wincons like Thassa's Oracle, Triskaidekaphile, Approach of the Second Sun or Twenty-Toed Toad - all because of the quality of card draw this deck has. Not my jam tho.

- Space Dandy: Volo, Itinerant Scholar

- Meow: Impostor of the Sixth Pride - An alien that looks like a cat, but he's actually not a cat (an "imposter", a "changeling")

- QT: Ghost Vacuum, really nothing to explain here. She cleans up graveyards, and can shoot out allies?.

- Scarlett: Moon-Blessed Cleric - She searches your archives (library) and provides you payment (in finding an enchantment for you!).

- Honey: Smothering Tithe, spending all the money at b00bies (the name of the breasteraunt she works at)

- Dr. Gel: Barrin, Tolarian Archmage, could be a better reference out there. But it's a bearded guy, that removes creatures, but also can help you out in the end? It's a stretch.

- Dr. Bea: Jace's Archivist, a Gycro spy (giving card advantage to your opponents), whilst being a wincon if overused.

- Admiral Perry: Ulamog, the Infinite Gyre. He's a big bad scary guy. The Ruler of the Gogol empire.

- The Aloha Oe: Shorikai, Genesis Engine

- The Super Hullkider(sp?): Aetherflux Reservoir

- Any card that has space art like Hallowed Fountain, or Teferi's Ageless Insight.

- "It's all about the booty, baby" - Kami of the Crescent Moon

- Scantily Clad Women. Smothering Tithe (Honey), Mother of Runes, and hopefully many more to come.

- Cards that reference "Archive". Meticulous Archive, Walking Archive, Alhammarret's Archive, etc...

Potential References:

- Dr. Gel's ship: Angel of the Ruins. His ship has the statue of liberty on it. Would meld with ETB strat, plus plainscycling is always nice.
- Cards with the "Alien" Creature type. There aren't many that synergize cleanly with what I want to do
- Forced Fruition would go with the mill strat, and the secret lair art fits the Space Dandy Aesthetic

The "" signifies that the reference is loose, and could use help.
The "" signifies that there isn't a reference in the deck. What's written is only a suggestion

  • Episode 1, Equilibrium. This card represents 'cosmic strings', an overarching concept that weaves itself throughout the entire series. It's what connects dimensions together, a work of god. It allows creatures to bounce between dimensions (hand and battlefield), and assists dandy in collecting different alien species (by allowing you to recast changelings and rack up creature types on volo's journal).

  • Episode 2, an episode about legendary ramen, the concept of Ulamog, the Infinite Gyre can carry loose representation. Eldrazi are often referred as "spaghetti monsters", and spaghetti is a cousin to ramen. Too bad Dockside Chef isn't in my colors.

  • Episode 3, I don't have a good reference, but possibly Glasspool Mimic  , which is a clone, or Fear of Impostors?

  • Episode 4, an episode about zombies: Fatestitcher

  • Episode 5, a Gentwo-en encounter, who possesses the ability to capture another being's conscious and transfer it into another being's body. Shapesharer can transform my other changelings into other creatures. It's funny. There's an odd "combo" where Amoeboid Changeling gives the shapeshifter creature to any other creature, then Shapesharer transforms it. I don't know when I'll have use for this trick...but it's definitely a thing.

  • Episode 6, Sokrates, Athenian Teacher isn't wearing a shirt? I just need to find a card with a pantsless character on it.

  • Episode 7, an episode about a space race. I will probably get a reference for this when Aether Drift releases next month.

  • Episode 8, "The Lonely Pooch Planet", Chakram Retriever. A dog that assists you in your journey, but is without it's "partner [with]".

  • Episode 9, an episode about super-intelligent plants: Lotus Field, and Gilded Lotus, which are the most effective mana producers in the deck.

  • Episode 10, loose reference, but I could say that Kwain, Itinerant Meddler could represent Meow's hospitable family? Or Trenzalore Clocktower to represent the episode's time loop.

  • Episode 11, is an episode about memory and confusion. Psychic Corrosion makes your opponents "forget" as their library melt into the graveyard. Plus the secret lair art portrays the black-and-white art-style of the episode. The female voice that's given to the episode's female antagonist.

  • Episode 12, an episode about a shapeshifter: any changeling really, but Glasspool Mimic   highlights the idea most closely. I can bounce it to have it change forms.

  • Episode 13, when QT finds love. Run Away Together.

  • Episode 14, a reference to the multi-dimensional universe, this episode depicts the many versions of Dandy. This Town Ain't Big Enough is a loose reference, because there can only be one "true" Dandy.

  • Episode 15, honestly. No clue, something that transforms a creature like Darksteel Mutation (not it deck)? The alien in this episode is trying to transform Dandy into a statue.

  • Episode 16, This Island reminds me of the art of this episode. It's probably the fish and the Adventure Time animation.

  • Episode 17, I can certainly find a better reference, but this is an episode that feels like High-School Musical. Park Bleater is creature-type "Performer", and Sokrates, Athenian Teacher is a, well, teacher.

  • Episode 18, an episode about a big fish: Shabraz, the Skyshark

  • Episode 19: Anything that references a cloud...Cloudstone Curio, Sea of Clouds huh..

  • Episode 20: Musician...is not in the deck because jank, but could be for the lolz

  • Episode 21: Could suggest Lost Auramancers to represent the aimless sadness in the episode, however I'm using them to represent the Gogol empire (Episode 26).

  • Episode 22: Could use Dance of Many, but I have that in my fortnite deck, plus the synergies aren't ~amazing~

  • Episode 23: This is the episode where Dandy and Scarlett start dating. Park Bleater is an unfinity sticker card that represents the amusement park atmosphere of their dates.

  • Episode 24: And episode about the fourth dimension. I like Teferi's Ageless Insight for this one, as she doubles the output (draw) (kinda like exponential growth, changing a straight line into a curved one...loosely like how 1d goes to 2d which goes to 3d, then 4d)...idk. The secret lair art ALMOST depicts a tesseract...(Not really tho)

  • Episode 25, an episode about a court hearing: Forensic Researcher is the prosecutor or jury, and helps decide the Council's Judgment..

  • Episode 26: Lost Auramancers represent the Gogol Empire's effort to seek Pyonium, which is kind of like a 'god particle'. Omniscience represents the Pyonium they are looking for, what eventually represents dandy becoming god, a trans-dimensional being.

Future sets that'll be released this year will likely provide me some goodies. Aether Drift, Edge of Eternities, and Final Fantasy should all bring spaceships and colorful alien-like creatures, AND the Lorwin reboot should hopefully bring some more changelings. It'll be exciting to see how this deck transforms over these next releases!

The Book of Exalted Deeds + Mutavault (and changelings, I guess). Make it hard for me to lose. I would probably want to include more lifegain. idk. It's a niche combo. I could do book-typal...lol

The deck welcomes changeling-typal payoffs. I could try to incorporate more lords and kindred payoffs.

~go wide?~
This is definitely an option.

The more I sit and think about this deck, I could probably use a well-rounded wincon like this. Myojin of Blooming Dawn spoke to me recently, and could be bananas if paired with Omniscience and bounce effects. If I use Crashing Drawbridge, I could theoretically combo win with Curio, Omniscience, Myojin, and any other creature to produce 2034987562349 spirit tokens, then drawbridge to hastey win.

Regardless, go wide could be viable without the infinite combo. Cards like the The Council of Four, Minn, Wily Illusionist, and like 6 other create critters when you draw your second card. Most of these cards are either Humans or Wizards, so they blend nicely with Folk Hero. Even Shorikai goes wide. I'd probably want to include anthems, which would eat up a lot of card slots. E. Honda, Sumo Champion, and Knowledge is Power could slot it nicely if this would be the route I take. I just don't really want to make another token deck.
At least Space Beleren would finally have purpose if I lean 'go wide' due to his underwhelming +1/+1 counter ability. Uggh, why is he so BAD?!?
