WELCOME: HASTE MAN the deck is centered around haste, for ognis's effect. i basically always cast ognis as soon as i can and swing at whoever doesn't have a big enough blocker to kill me for the treasure. then i keep doing that.

my IDEAL haste situation is ognis + haste enabler + a bunch of tokens. this makes me a shit ton of treasures that allow me to do whatever i want next turn

originally, i built this deck around myriad, because i thought that you could get a ton of treasures by having ognis on the board and then swinging with a myriad haste creature. this is evidenced by my early game logs in the comments below. however, i learned that myriad doesn’t trigger ognis, because myriad tokens don’t attack, they just enter attacking. so rip that beastly version of this deck.

to replace my beautiful defunct myriad subtheme, i’ve since leaned into the two alternative subthemes of this deck: tokens, and theft-sacrifice.

CATEGORY: TOKEN SUBTHEME

tokens are what they say on the box. you make tokens, you give them haste with some haste enabler, then you swing at someone and create a bunch of treasure tokens for a GASSED UP next turn. an added bonus is that i have a lot of corrupted conviction and village rites type effects. these work with the theft-sacrifice theme, but they also work to generate biggo card draw off of tokens. bonus points for tokens that get generated every upkeep.

CATEGORY: THEFT-SACRIFICE SUBTHEME

nothing is more fun than stealing an opponent’s scary creature, giving it haste, attacking them with it, creating a treasure token, and then sacrificing it to draw two cards. so i really maximized the number of cards that help me do that in this deck. this works out great because even if i don’t have a way to sacrifice it, i still get the attack/treasure token, and even if i don’t have the theft card, i can use the village-rites-type effects on tokens i create. or creatures that i no longer care about, like mana dorks late in the game. or creatures that i do care about, but i really need cards so i don’t die. card draw is good. theft is good. sacrifice is good.

CATEGORY: REMOVAL SUBTHEME

my meta likes (sometimes unconventional) tribal decks, and occasionally shuns people who don’t use tribal decks. thus, this is “haste tribal” (kinda). but along with that tribal meta comes a motivation to put as many of that creature type into the deck as possible, and that usually comes with the cutting of other cards, which often is removal. when i was running a precursor to this deck as ziatora, i ended up running it kind of like a jund control thing, cuz ziatora’s effect came in clutch for me a few times to kill an opponent’s big scary creature that nobody else could cuz nobody runs removal. and then i was like wait, removal is dope actually. so i put in a removal subtheme. and i’ve ramped it up a bit under ognis. there’s a lot of creature removal, artifact stuff, some enchantment stuff, permanent stuff, and the theft-sacrifice subtheme (which has been around since ziatora, but i’ve now built back into the deck with more intention).

CATEGORY: BIGGO BUDGET REDUCER

i don’t really like spending money on stuff that’s not going to help me survive once ai takes my job and threatens human existence, so i went through and chose budget options. but honestly a lot of these are just like good cards - for instance, doing victimize instead of reanimate or animate dead - because i steal shit, i like to sacrifice things, so victimize is great. or damnnation versus blasphemous edict. it’s not like blasphedict is a CHEAP card, but it’s cheaper than damnation, and making my token tribal friends sacrifice 13 of their favorite tokens alongside their hexproof ward 4 commanders is nice.

CATEGORY: NOTABLE OMISSIONS: ANY TREASURE BULLSHIT

never been a fan of stuff that benefits from sacrificing treasure tokens, or helping me make this many treasure tokens plus one, or any of that type of thing. i don’t want to be running situational cards that are shitty if i’m not making a ton of treasure tokens each turn, or incentivizing me to use my treasure tokens in a dumb way (see notes category). so any of that “this creature likes to be cast using treasure tokens” or “this creature will ping someone if you crack a treasure token” or “this creature makes a food token when you make a treasure token” NO NO NO NO NO. None of that. we aren’t running cards that NEED my commander to be on the field. if my playgroup catches on and starts removing her, i need this deck to run like a well-oiled machine without her. and piddling around twiddling my thumbs trying to eek a treasure token out of my asscrack to cast a rhinocerous for half the mana is NOT on my agenda.

CATEGORY: DECK HISTORY

this used to be a ziatora theft-sacrifice deck, but ziatora was too big to cast early, too fragile to protect, too scary to live for very long, and also didn’t have haste so it was rare for me to actually get to use her effect more than once or twice in a game. then i think Florigen introduced me to ognis, and i was like this is it chief. haste tribal here we come. ognis is actually way more powerful than i thought she was going to be, like as a card. it’s a value engine that just sits there, doesn’t look super threatening (3/3 with no keywords but haste helps), doesn’t immediately change the game (creating tapped treasures helps), and yeah that’s it. nobody has actually devoted spot removal to her yet i think, just like board wipes and stuff - but usually those are aimed at other people anyway. people who play scarier stuff.

CATEGORY: NOTES

playstyle wise, with the treasure tokens, i usually try to tap all my lands first before cracking any treasure tokens, because the lands will untap, but the treasure tokens never come back. i’ve been vandalblasted one time so far, which is one of the main reasons to NOT approach it with this philosophy. but it’s better for me to bet that my opponents DON’T have a vandalblast / treasure thief in hand and set myself up for a HUGELY GASSED UP turn with all my lands and like 10 treasures, rather than to slowly crack down my treasure pile cuz i’m loss averse. ROLL THE DICE, BOIZ. THIS IS A RAKDOS DECK WITH GREEN FOR RAMP. LET'S TAKE RISKS. LET’S RIDE. LET’S KILL STUFF.
