Land Analysis

Power Level and Game Plan

The deck's primary goal is to find and copy Field of the Dead several times with spells like Copy Land and Replication Technique and other lands such as Vesuva and Thespian's Stage. After several Field of the Deads have been assembled, the deck can easily assemble a huge army of zombies and then swing for lethal.

This is a casual mid-power deck that aims to compete at the ~6 level on the power 10 scale. The deck is able to swing for lethal by turn 9-10 on average.

The primary strength of the deck is its low level of being able to be interacted with because so much of the deck's development is focused on land generation. The primary weakness of the deck is that it struggles to assemble blockers between turns 1-5 and as a result, it can take a decent amount of chip damage early in the game. The deck is also quite weak to fliers.

Tutor Guide:

Dizzy Spell will search for Expedition Map 99% of the time (which can then be used to search for Field of the Dead) but it can also find the following options:

Drift of Phantasms will search for Copy Land 80% of the time (which can then be used to copy Field of the Dead) but it can also find the following options:
Draw: Rhystic Study
Tutors:

Expedition Map and Tolaria West will search for Field of the Dead 99% of the time, but if you already have it on the field, you can grab the following in priority order:

Fabricatefoil and Whir of Invention will search for Expedition Map 80% of the time, but here are other options:

Merchant Scroll's primary line to Field of the Dead is to tutor for Dizzy Spell and then tutor for Expedition Map which tutors for Field of the Dead. However, in playtesting, I found that I mostly use it to search for Cyclonic Rift. Other options are as follows:

Trinket Mage and Urza's Saga will search for Expedition Map 99% of the time, but other options include Sol Ring, Seat of the Synod, Wayfarer's Bauble, and Explorer's Scope

Scampering Surveyor can be used to find Urza's Cave which can be used to find Field of the Dead

Other Notes:

Heraldic Banner should always be named black due to the zombies created from Field of the Dead being black.

Patchwork Banner should name zombies as the creature type.

You can use Surveyor's Scope more effectively by activating it in response to one or more fetchland triggers on your side of the field because Surveyor's Scope will "see" less lands on the field due to the lands already having been sacced as part of the fetchland triggers.

Virtue of Knowledge's adventure side, Vantress Visions, can target a fetchland trigger to ramp a land untapped for only 2 mana.

Urborg, Tomb of Yawgmoth and Yavimaya, Cradle of Growth are in the deck so that you can tap your fetchlands for mana and hold your fetchland triggers for a huge burst later in the game to minimize the odds of your zombies getting wiped.

Replication Technique should be used to copy Field of the Dead twice by giving an opponent the demonstrate trigger.

Season of Weaving should most often be used to bounce permanents and draw a couple of cards.

Myriad Landscape's fetch trigger must be used to search for islands or snow-covered islands because Wastes does not have a basic land type.

Treat Anduril, Narsil Reforged as a 5 CMC finisher. You do NOT want to play it and then pass because it will get blown up immediately.

Deep Analysis is a 4 mana draw 4 with Baral out.

Lands that can ramp:

Notable Exclusions:

  • Nykthos, Shrine to Nyx is excluded due to the deck's inability to generate a lot of blue pips on the board.
  • Sapphire Medallion is excluded because it is redundant with Baral and doesn't generate landfall triggers. It IS an amazing card in the deck and is definitely the 101st or 102nd card in the deck.
  • The sword-of cycle such as Sword of Hearth and Home and Sword of Feast and Famine require dealing combat damage and the deck simply does not have evasive creatures to trigger these reliably before turn 6ish.
  • Mitotic Manipulation cannot reliably ramp out an island.
  • Retraced Image is not worth a card slot and there are not enough islands in the deck to make it a reliable way to ramp.
