Chilling Grasp

Instant

Tap up to two target creatures. Those creatures don't untap during their controller's next untap step.

Madness 3U (If you discard this card, discard it into exile. When you do, cast it for its madness cost or put it into your graveyard.)

I play a casual blue black that utilizes a lot of "freeze/stall" spells as I like to call them. Creatures like Frost Lynx, Watertrap Weaver, and Fogwalker; Harbinger of the Tides. Enchantments such as Malfunction, Ice Over, and Claustrophobia. Play instants like Send to Sleep, Chilling Grasp, and Ojutai's Breath. As far as black...Deathstroke, Assassinate, Royal Assassin, Rathi Assassin, Stalking Assassin, Murderous Compulsion. Throw some nasty flyers in the mix and you're sure to piss off your friends.

Is this deck budget? If not, Torrential Gearhulk is a great card since it has flash and is a huge blocker and attacker. Also, if you're looking for some instant-speed cards, you have Magma Spray, Grip of the Roil, Reduce to Rubble, and Chilling Grasp.

Pretty sweet build! I'm glad she likes Simic like me :) In my opinion, you'd be better served mainboarding all 4 Bristling Hydra and perhaps a second Skysovereign, Consul Flagship and taking out the Aether Swoopers. Hydra is faaaaantastic! I play a temur build here: Temur Energy B-B-Beats with Elder Deep-Fiend, which is a pretty budget and really great card you could look into.

I'd also exchange the Chilling Grasps and Cartouche of Strengths in the side for 4 Essence Scatter, and maybe pick up a Lifecrafter's Bestiary or similar card (second copy of Nissa? Kiora, Master of the Depths? any card advantage permanent) to replace the Bristling Hydra you moved.

Best of luck to ya!

I think this needs some work. Spirits are typically a bunch of low-health evasive creatures, so i would use a tempo-approach. slow your opponent down, while constantly hitting in the air. Silburlind Snapper does not suit this playstyle and Compelling Deterrence is kind of Just the Wind. Nebelgast Herald and Selfless Spirit would be useful.

Alternatively, you could try to build a control deck, that wants to cast a big Rise from the Tides at the end of the game. In that case, you need more spells (in the deck and especially in the graveyard) and better defenses. I would suggest Catalog, Nagging Thoughts, Geist of the Archives, and Contingency Plan. These help finding your land drops and Rise from the Tides, while making it stronger. Some counterspells could also help, e.g. Deny Existence.

Either of these strategies could benefit from Niblis of Frost and Chilling Grasp.

If you want to take control of their creatures, perhaps instead of removal spells, run tap spells so you can keep them alive while shutting them down. In that case, Icy Blast, Chilling Grasp, Gigadrowse, Take into Custody, Ice Over, and Blustersquall are all good at that, course there's also Niblis of Frost and Frost Titan in terms of creatures.

The least appealing cards I'd look to trade out would be Chilling Grasp, Inner Struggle and/or Fateful Showdown. Showdown is likely only going to deal 2 or 3, which visions will do while drawing you cards.

I still like Thermo-Alchemist on turn two. What would you rather cast that early besides homonculus? Probably not flow, definitely not Unsubstantiate. Those are better later. With alchemist you end up with so much value from your cheap spells that it can easily deal 3+ damage a turn. Just saying it's worth trying since you're deck is kind of open at that spot and I've had good success with it.

Brainstorm instead of Ponder because it triggers Sphinx three times, and Wall of Frost over Glacial Wall because it's a straight upgrade.

I love irritating decks, so here's a few tips on how to piss of an opponent the most:

  • Keep plenty of return-to-hand spells so that opponents have to recast their things a lot, and to buy time until you draw counterspells. Use Boomerang over Chilling Grasp since you already have Claustrophobia
  • Remove Inkwell Leviathan. While it is a really strong creature, you don't have the means to actually bring it out in a reasonable amount of time, and it doesn't really fit this deck. Try Scourge of Fleets.
  • Try fitting in a spell with Cipher. It'll give your Invisible Stalker something to do while it's hitting your opponent. I suggest Hands of Binding

Other than that, this deck seems pretty good. If you wanted to toy around with other cards, , creatures like Man-o'-War that bounce enemy creatures, additional counterspells, and maybe even a touch of lifegain Staff of the Mind Magus couldn't hurt. Another fun little trick is to put in Curse of the Swine use it alongside return-spells to essentially board-wipe the enemy.

Maybe replace two Uninvited Geist  Flip and two Island with four Mausoleum Wanderer and replace Chilling Grasp with Grip of the Roil, as that replaces itself. Maybe also add some Void Shatter to completely get rid of something.
