This is a challenging tribe to build around. I would recommend checking out Saffron Olive's video on finding the competitive advantage of your tribe. Also, Tomer built a phoenix tribal deck for Commander Clash not too long ago. Watch the end to see how he wins, because it's pretty great.

In terms of specific cards, I think Mana Echoes would go well, since you need a lot of mana to enable phoenixes. Thundermaw Hellkite could be good. Lose Temple of the False God and Dormant Volcano , though, because those are awful cards. The former because it's useless as a 3rd, 4th, or 5th land, and the latter because it's just asking to be strip-mined and is both slow and makes colorless mana.

Finally, you might want to consider adding a second color. For example, in blue, you gain access to Favorable Winds , Gravitational Shift (It's freaking Elesh Norn, Grand Cenobite in your deck), Sprite Noble , Stormtide Leviathan , Windstorm Drake , Warden of Evos Isle , Windreader Sphinx , Kindred Discovery , Call to the Kindred , Distant Melody , Mistform Warchief , Faces of the Past , Riptide Shapeshifter , Saheeli's Artistry , Sakashima's Student , Sakashima the Impostor , Metamorphic Alteration , Phantasmal Image , Clone , Quicksilver Gargantuan , Protean Raider , Mirror Image , Gigantoplasm , Stunt Double , Clever Impersonator , Dack's Duplicate , Phyrexian Metamorph , Coastal Piracy , and Bident of Thassa .

In white, you get Archon of Redemption , Energy Storm , Magus of the Moat (and Moat if you have unlimited money), Radiant, Archangel , Serra Aviary , Soulcatcher , Spirit of the Spires , Harsh Mercy , Shared Triumph , Kindred Boon , Mirror Entity , Radiant Destiny , . Going into Jeskai also gives you Teferi's Moat and Thunderclap Wyvern .

Tibor and Lumia would be my choice for an Izzet commander, Aurelia, the Warleader would be my choice for Boros, and Kraum, Ludevic's Opus + Ishai, Ojutai Dragonspeaker would be my choice for Jeskai.

Why aren't you running Krosan Warchief? I get leaving out Mistform Warchief to round out the cycle, but I like Krosan Warchief quite a bit.

The first deck I ever built was actually a changeling super tribal deck. So I love your deck here! For some suggestions: I would take out Eye Gouge for Misery Charm. Same cost, same effect in this deck + additional options. Lovisa Coldeyes will give a nice boost and keyword. Seahunter, Moggcatcher, and Skyshroud Poacher all do the same thing, but I think at least one would be a good addition. Consider some of the other "Warchief" lords from Scourge. I see that you already have Mistform Warchief in here, but the others could be good too, especially if there are other non-changeling cards that you want to cast for cheaper in the deck. Didgeridoo to cheat your dudes in to play. Whelming Wave and Quest for Ula's Temple would be good. Kentaro, the Smiling Cat to use any color of mana to pay for creatures. Swarmyard is good but the card is a little expensive. Coalition Flag is just a funny card to use. Rashida Scalebane is a good assassin. And maybe even Borderland Behemoth for a big-ass finisher. If you want more tribal tidbits try either of these 2 Tribal Resources. Anyway, +1 from me, hope some of these suggestions were helpful!

+1 for using one of my favourite creature types :)

I'd add a few Mistform Warchiefs to help with "ramping". looking at you instant-selection, I'd totally consider either Isochron Scepter or Elite Arcanist to be a total dick ;)

Stratus Walk seems a little superfluous, since most of your guys already have flying or some other form of evasion.

Dismiss into Dream is a fantastic and flavourful card, but it works a lot better in a deck with plenty of abilities and spells with which you can target your opponents' critters. You could check out my deck A Dream most cruel to see what I mean ;)

Keep up the good work, dude

Ahh my apologies. How about Steely Resolve or Cover of Darkness? Maybe even Mistform Warchief or Stoneforge Masterwork since it was banned from standard?

- Grand Arbiter Augustin IV

First up - Locking:

  • Null Rod + Mycosynth Lattice: As said previously, locks everything out, including lands.
  • Linvala, Keeper of Silence: Just as good as the previous combo but cheaper and this one stops the majority of any deck isn't aggro.
  • Rule of Law / Ethersworn Canonist / Eidolon of Rhetoric: Restrict your opponenets to play nothing and with Ethersworn, even if they play it, with Null Rod out, it can't do anything.
  • Hokori, Dust Drinker / Winter Orb / Static Orb / Tangle Wire / Back to Basics: Slow everyone down superbly while you have your cmc reducers out.
  • Spirit of the Labyrinth / Knowledge Pool: Teamed up with Rule of Law, this combo hard locks everyone away.
  • Thalia, Heretic Cathar / Blind Obedience / Frozen AEther: If your opponents can't untap stuff, make it so it's never untapped in the first place!
  • Secondly - Taxation:

  • Noncreature Taxation - Thalia, Guardian of Thraben, Thorn of Amethyst, Aura of Silence: Tax your opponents so they have to spend ALL of their mana on the one spell they cast that turn.
  • Opponent Taxation - Rhystic Study, Mystic Remora, Propaganda (all those cards): Either prevent them from hurting you or make it so they are unable to pay to prevent you from getting a benefit.
  • Combo Preventer - Aven Mindcensor and Containment Priest: Instantly crushes combo and token decks.
  • Thirdly - Protection

  • Spellskite: While this is an activated ability, just people seeing this card acts like a huge bluff. They see it and won't target anything even though a card like Null Rod is canceling it.
  • Grand Abolisher / Defense Grid: Why let your opponents cast on your turn when they can barely do anything on theirs?
  • Karmic Justice / Martyr's Bond: Disincentivize any sort of removal.
  • Lastly - CMC Reduction

  • Celestial Dawn: This card is key. This turns every spell you have white! This means Grand Arbiter Augustin IV already makes a Winter Orb a cost. (Note: If you play this after Mycosynth Lattice, it basically cancels out the colorless and mana bit but keeps everything artifacts.)
  • Cloud Key / Semblance Anvil / Pearl Medallion / Sapphire Medallion / Seal of the Guildpact / Conduit of Ruin: Under the same notion as before with Grand Arbiter.
  • Urza's Incubator / Mistform Warchief: If you choose to go another subsubtheme with a tribal, these also help quite a bit. If you run enough, I'd also recommend Call to the Kindred.

  • Basically the goal is to make your creatures cost while your opponents get taxed out of the wah-zoo. You also want to find cards that make it so you get stuff out into the field without casting it in the case of you accidently taxing yourself (e.g. a Quicksilver Amulet but that goes everything I've said but nothing else is coming to mind).

I was thinking about your deck more...

Artificial Evolution, Unnatural Selection & Standardize also came to mind. Maybe even Peer Pressure could be used here...like if you have enough changelings in play to outnumber any actual tribes anywhere else in play you would steal them. I like shenanigans. I also like Harmonic Sliver and Sliver Hivelord.

Then there is Moggcatcher & Seahunter, but maybe you already have enough of that kind of effect. Plus Descendants' Path, Call to the Kindred, and Leaf-Crowned Elder work for no mana anyways.

Some more synergy with creature type cards, Runed Stalactite, Harsh Mercy, Mistform Warchief, Mistform Ultimus, Patriarch's Bidding.

    ..lol have fun :)
