I wanted to win by beating face with big creatures in every format, even cedh. Therefore, if my wincon is slow, I need to drag everyone else down to my level, hence the stax strategy. My big creatures will win eventually, I just need to not lose until then. Not the best approach to cedh, I admit, but too fun to pass up.
