Thanks for your suggesstion defamagraphy1! I added Piper of the Swarm to Maybeboard and I will give it a thought. I really like that it is 1/3 and a goood replacement candidate for Nezumi Cutthroat.

Hi Shayda!!!

Dude those dragons are doing so well (when no one wipes them)!

Did you want a similar deck? 'Cuz that's what you've got here... but I think you should lean into go-wide-aggro > midrange and play more 1-2 cmc creatures and move all your ramp to 2 (Rampant Growth, signets, etc).

I'd also recommend Golgari Charm, Boros Charm, and Heroic Intervention.

Tribal decks have so much flavor! Hope this helps, maybe we'll see it next weekend? :o

This deck performs very well with some decently large deficiencies. I think you need to cut some weaker cards (sorceries and creatures mostly) and add in more Ninjas and ninja synergies.

Cards to Cut: Creatures: Definite cuts are Jeskai Infiltrator, but I'd also heavily consider trimming Dark Impostor, Deathcult Rogue, Etrata, the Silencer, and Nezumi Cutthroat.

Sorceries: Definitely cut Hour of Eternity, Kefnet's Last Word, Paranoid Delusions and consider trimming Ghostform, Slip Through Space, or Stealth Mission.

Artifacts, Enchantments, Instants, Planeswalkers, and Lands: I would definitely cut Briber's Purse, Fatal Push, and Vraska, Scheming Gorgon while also giving thought to the merits of including Skygames, Bontu's Monument, Forge of Heroes, Unclaimed Territory, and of, or at least the Amonkhet, cycling lands.

The cards I have recommended are either slow, have low to zero synergy with the rest of the deck, or are typically weak in commander.

Cards to Add Creatures: Ninjas, ninjas, and more ninjas (plus some cheaper unblockables for good measure). There are 19 Ninjas in mtg history (excluding changelings). You have 11 in this deck. I think you ought to have more. The cheapest are Mistblade Shinobi, Okiba-Gang Shinobi, Skullsnatcher, Throat Slitter, and Walker of Secret Ways. Higure, the Still Wind and Ink-Eyes, Servant of Oni are both reasonable splurges in terms of powerful Ninjas to acquire. Now for other creatures to enable Ninjitsu. First off, I could have included Changeling Outcast in the last section since it is also a Ninja and you should absolutely be running it in here. Other small unblockables for you to Ninjitsu into are Gudul Lurker, Slither Blade, Tormented Soul, Faerie Seer, Mothdust Changeling, Gingerbrute, Dimir Infiltrator, Baleful Strix, Invisible Stalker, Augury Owl, Sage Owl, Spire Owl, and Cloud of Faeries. All of these cards are less than 3 cmc, and are either entirely unblockable or have good etb/ltb or dealing combat damage synergy (and are mostly pretty cheap too). I'd recommend adding at least 3 or 4 of them in addition to the above ninjas.

Other cards: This section is mostly for general things that you could do to make this deck more consistent and enjoyable to pilot, but there are a couple specific synergies I think you're missing out on. They're both pretty intertwined so I'll just address them together. I think you could be putting in a few more cards that are good to reveal off of Yuriko's trigger and ways to manipulate the top of your library so you get those card when they are most impactful. I am referring to cards like Treasure Cruise, Sibsig Muckdraggers, Temporal Trespass, Dig Through Time, Draco, Consign / Oblivion, Murderous Cut, Far / Away, Curtains' Call, Into the Story, Submerge, Commandeer, Commit / Memory, Discovery / Dispersal, Rags / Riches, In Garruk's Wake, and any other high cost card that has an alternate mana cost, mana reducing ability, split card, or is a high impact card. Then you could also throw in a few ways to manipulate the top of your library like Brainstorm, Ponder, Serum Visions, Tamiyo's Epiphany, and Crystal Ball. The only other synegystic thing you could put in here is making your other creatures Ninjas as well with Conspiracy, Xenograft, Arcane Adaptation, and Amorphous Axe.

Otherwise, you could probably add in some more ramp (Sol Ring, Mind Stone, Star Compass, etc.), card draw (see cantrips above and Last Thoughts), board wipes (could probably replace Bontu's Last Reckoning with some of the ones from the last section or just add those ones or some other good boardwipes) and spot removal or counterspells (I don't see a lot of good ways to deal w/ non-creature permanents in here).

Pretty nice deck!

I think you may want to consider including creatures with Shadow. Dauthi Horror , for example, costs the same as Nezumi Cutthroat , but your opponent is probably less likely to have a creature with Shadow than a black/artifact creature.

Giving your creatures Infect through Phyresis or Tainted Strike might also be nice, but you need them early for them to be useful. Rite of Consumption / Essence Harvest are good as a finishing move for a deck like this.

I personally prefer Enchantments over Instants, and if they're Auras, they have nice synergy with Aura Gnarlid .

Needs more Rat Colony

With only 6 Relentless Rats you need half of your total number on the battlefield to even make them 4/4s. Most of the time they will be 3 mana 2/2s. You need a critical mass of Relentless Rats--at least 20. If you want to dedicate only a small portion of your deck to the Relentless effect, then Rat Colony is much better; unlike Relentless Rats it benefits from any rat you control, including Marrow-Gnawer's tokens. Pack Rat is also superior if you have many non-Relentless Rats.

Rat Colony is strictly better than Swarm of Rats. It's also generally better than Bog Rats, Carrion Rats, Muck Rats, Nezumi Cutthroat (fear isn't worth a large power loss and "can't block", especially when Marrow-Gnawer provides fear), Pestilence Rats (Rat Colony gets +2/-2 under most conditions and costs 1 less), and Earsplitting Rats (not enough graveyard/discard synergies).

Other suggestions

Tormod's Crypt -> Nihil Spellbomb, Bojuka Bog. You can run Crypt in addition if needed, but I would use these first.

Kitesail -> Bladed Pinions, Fleetfeather Sandals.

Geth's Grimoire -> remove. Only four or so cards in this deck actually cause an opponent to discard. Since you're running Ancient Craving, might as well slot in Ambition's Cost as well.

Nightmare Lash -> Lashwrithe. Or just run both, but Lashwrithe first.

Sword of the Paruns -> Bad Moon, Adaptive Automaton, Hall of Triumph, Vanquisher's Banner, and Obelisk of Urd are all more mana efficient and consistent ways to pump your rats.

Altar's Reap -> Costly Plunder, Night's Whisper, Sign in Blood.

I'm not sure how Shriveling Rot serves the deck.

There are two Cabal Strongholds, so one needs to come out. Cycling lands--Barren Moor, Polluted Mire, and Desert of the Glorified--hedge against land-heavy draws. Some cheap utility/value lands like Zhalfirin Void, Encroaching Wastes, Mystifying Maze, or Temple of the False God might be good over some number of Swamps too.

Phyrexian Tribute -> Scour from Existence, Unstable Obelisk. I know black is bad with artifacts, but there is a reason Phyrexian Tribute is in 55 edh decks, and the other two are in over 5000 each, and it isn't just color restriction. They cover all five permanent types instead of just one, including the equally hard-for-black enchantments. Requiring two creatures to sacrifice, Phyrexian Tribute isn't even always easier to cast, and it's effect is far less flexible.

Speaking of Unstable Obelisk, more mana ramp would be prudent, like Wayfarer's Bauble, Mind Stone, and Commander's Sphere. Bontu's Monument isn't Jet Medallion, but is still worthwhile with 27 creatures.

I don't think there are enough graveyard synergies to make Living Death appropriate.

Night Dealings is slow, does nothing if the battlefield isn't somewhat favorable, can potentially get removed, makes you reveal, and can't get lands. Razaketh's Rite and Mastermind's Acquisition tutor with no fuss. If you want slow, multi-card tutoring, Diabolic Revelation, Demonic Collusion, and Increasing Ambition are reliable options. Although none feature Nezumi in their art.

Curse of Death's Hold is a bit narrow for multiplayer; I'd prefer Ascendant Evincar which will hit more enemy creatures overall while buffing your own and being a 3/3 flier.

Nethereon on Rats and their Patron: 1st Budget Build

Concise list of considerations:

-/+ Dump Mind Twist and add Torment of Hailfire HOLY CRAP, do I love this card. It gets around so many things plus it hits every opponent.

Let's talk about your mana base for a second...

Thirty two lands? Even for a very cavalier spell slinger deck, that is a very low amount to play. I play a Shu Yun, the Silent Tempest deck on 36 and struggle some times to reach a critical mass of mana/spells. Don't fall into the trap of "I'll cut a land for this cheap spell; it'll be fine." Again, math and probability will not be on your side in the late game, not unless you're willing to invest in Nykthos, Shrine to Nyx or Cabal Coffers. An alternative might be to run Crypt of Agadeem but it's really no substitute for those lands.

Lastly, jam a Bojuka Bog or a Scavenger Grounds or both in there for graveyard hate, along with your choice of Strip Mine, Ghost Quarter, and/or Field of Ruin because if you can't have your Crypt or Coffers, why should they?

Hope this helps, good luck!

Titilanious Thanks for the suggestions. Yeah, Patron of the Nezumi is not very good. I was having problems with late game blocking especially, and with the rat offering option of Patron, I could cast if for only 4 mana if I had a Chittering Rats . Unfortunately it was usually dead in my hand. Ink-Eyes, Servant of Oni actually wasn't bad in earlier versions of this build which was way more rat heavy and included more Typhoid Rats , Nezumi Cutthroat , Swarm of Rats as well as Skullsnatcher . I would swing with my army of rats, and just ninjutsu him out. It was more about sneaking in 5 damage than stealing a creature. However, as this deck progressed, I cut more and more rats in favor of discard spells and removal which kind of forced me to hold back the few rats I did have for blocks.

Thank you for the advice. I will definitely be doing some thinking and tinkering.
